AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

@AuntieStella
@likeamillpond

agree about walkers who are unwilling/unable to walk any less than 3 abreast.
I don't mind moving out of the way but somepeople don't even seem to acknowledge it.
Although lots of MN hate runners and we are wrong if we go out at all run near them/look at them/breathe/run in a park/run on a pavement/run in the woods/run in the road etc etc Grin

santabetterwashhishands · 02/03/2021 12:22

I agree with him 🤷‍♀️
Around here they don't step out of the way when they jog past on the pavement and there out of breath panting right at ya 😡

Ohnomoreno · 02/03/2021 12:27

He can take a running jump

LilMidge01 · 02/03/2021 12:29

@fortyfifty

I'm crap at running but can see through people who project their own feelings of inadequacy on to runners/cyclists by finding petty ways to demonise them.

Runners are not the reason we had such high infection rates and all the while people engage in petty infighting, it takes the focus off the real culprits - our current government.

Trulyatraditionalman · 02/03/2021 12:30

Also for the people pointing out you can exercise at home...running is a sport in its own right, it isn't just a way of keeping fit and keeping weight off. I run as a sport, I compete in races when they are running out of pandemic times, and 'doing home workouts to keep fit' is not the same.

@lilmidge01 Totally agree!

OP posts:
MaxNormal · 02/03/2021 12:32

Maybe the fat cunt should try a bit of running himself.

Januaryissodull · 02/03/2021 12:33

Anyone who seriously suggests that runners should do a home workout instead clearly hasn't got the first clue about fitness and should probably try some proper exercise themselves.

bibbidybobbidyboo · 02/03/2021 12:34

It's a stupid comment and it's also impossible to enforce. You either need to make EVERYONE wear masks whenever they're outside in public, whether they're walking, running or whatever (as they've done in Spain) or you agree that outdoors is a mask free zone. If you just tried to penalise joggers you'd end up getting into an argument about what counts as running Vs speed walking Grin

Exactly. Pretty sure the UK’s death toll from Covid would have been a whole lot lower had more of us taken up running, due to obesity being a major risk factor 🤷🏻‍♀️
PickAChew · 02/03/2021 12:35

Bit off from a man who looks like he couldn't even run for a bus.

Yep

dreamingbohemian · 02/03/2021 12:36

You clearly just hate runners generally because you've met a few rude ones and have decided you're now annoyed at all of them (spoiler alert: there are rude runners and rude walkers, and rude dog walkers, rude pram pushers etc etc). I assume you would make way for an old lady because she has a physical disadvantage and finds it harder to get past, or generally wouldn't step out onto a zebra crossing right in front of a bike coming up a really steep hill when there is no other traffic and it would literally only delay you by a few seconds- its just polite. The person that it is the less inconvenience to makes way/waits. Sometimes its the runner, sometimes its the walker. Noone is saying it is always the runner. But in some circumstances it is.

Lol no. Why would I hate runners?? I am annoyed with the rude ones and where I live there seem to be an awful lot of them (and I agree with a PP, it does seem mostly to be men...)

I lived in big cities my whole life, where sharing pavements is always necessary. I don't think 'less inconvenient' is the determining factor. Like @RonObvious I think whoever is faster yields to the slower. I walk extremely fast, I don't expect people to get out of my way -- I go around them or accept that I walk more slowly where it's crowded.

Comparing runners to disabled people who need more time and space is not on.

I'm not saying I would never move for a runner but I was replying to a post that said if a runner is coming at me I should move because it's too much trouble for runners to have to deviate their path. Another poster complained that walkers don't notice runners coming up behind them, are we supposed to walk backwards?

Trulyatraditionalman · 02/03/2021 12:37

From the general concensus of some of the comments on here, I feel that the argument against runners goes largely beyond Covid, and is more about people's general opinions surrounding etiquette on the pavement. Runners have just as much right to the pavement as walkers. Runners aren't all dicks, but granted, some are. Same as walkers.

@poppycat10 haha yeah I did that too once! Got to the end of the road...

Worldgonecrazy · 02/03/2021 12:38

Piers Morgan is probably wanking himself stupid over a whole thread about him on Mumsnet.

He can fuck to the far side of fuck and then fuck off some more.

Runners are not spreading COVID 19.

I seriously cannot be arsed to devote any more time to boosting his ego by discussing his ridiculous statement which I believe comes from the Katie Hopkins School of Self Promotion.

The person travelling faster has the potential to do more damage to someone than someone travelling slower. Whether that's by car, bike, running or walking. If two walkers "crash", it's just a nudge, very unlikely to do any harm. If a runner runs into a walker, they'll almost certainly push them over onto the ground, so potential for broken bones, cuts, and bruises etc. That's why the person travelling faster needs to take more precautions to avoid a collision.
Chanandlerbong01 · 02/03/2021 12:41

Gosh there seems to be some really narrow paths about with all this squeezing past and banging shoulders.

I run and the only times I’ve ever had to squeeze past is when cars have been parked on the pavement and I can’t go round because the roads too busy. But usually only one person has gone at a time.... either the person there first has gone and the others waited or the person there first has signalled for the other to go - you none runners on here all seem to live in awful places that lack manners. Or is it you hold on to one incident because you are a negative nelly!

I’m also concerned for the safety of those that don’t hear the runner coming up behind them even though they are slamming the pavement while huffing and puffing. You really need to be more aware of your surroundings or you could end up putting yourself in danger.

If someone has to step into the road surely it depends on who is facing oncoming traffic, because they can see if it’s clear as opposed the the person with it behind them? If you are both going the same it’s the person behind because they are the one wanting to get passed.

At what speed do we decide it’s a run and not a jog or fast walk and implement the masks?

I’m starting to think I’m a mumsnet Satan - I run, cycle, have a dog, am both a teacher and step parent, wax my bikini, eat a full meal and use fabric softener!

dreamingbohemian · 02/03/2021 12:41

@user88899

I'm trying to imagine how densely populated an area must be for there not be enough space that runners are "huffing and puffing" over people. I've lived in London.
Have you been in a London park during lockdown? They are absolutely rammed with people because there is literally nowhere else to go. And the fields are mud so everyone is crammed into the paths. It's not enjoyable, most of us have stopped going.
user2469900 · 02/03/2021 12:42

Piers Morgan can wear a face mask every second while out in public if he so desires. He can wear one to bed or to bang whoever can tolerate screwing that without throwing up for all I care but he has no more right to demand other people do what he wants than the rest of us. I know he thinks he is King of England, Prime Minister and Big Brother rolled into one but he actually isn't.

Maybe he can get a really fucking big one, preferably one that covers his entire head. Save the rest of us having to look at the smug bastard.

While we're at it maybe there could be a ball gag in there so we don't have to listen to him either.

Or someone could do us all a favour and cuff his hands behind his back, gag him and tie him up in a nice big burlap sack. Watching him trying to wriggle free on a morning could be quite the entertaining distraction in these trying times.

PegasusReturns · 02/03/2021 12:45

I run 5 x per week and part of an established running community.

In my experience many runners particularly male runners are horribly inconsiderate.

It’s not restricted to covid.

I am sick of being brushed past; run up behind on dark nights; panted over. Yuk.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 02/03/2021 12:45

First time I've ever agreed with P Morgan however there are so many selfish runners round here on narrow pavements, the towpath etc who do not seem to have the ability to stop or take evasive action to avoid running far to close to pedestrians. How is that possible that they don't have the agility?? They have given all joggers a bad name.

Devlesko · 02/03/2021 12:45

Well, let him knock himself out, doubt if he knows what running is.
Good job we don't care what presenters think.

Elbels · 02/03/2021 12:46

Oh good another thread where runners / anyone who exercises outdoors are ripped apart by Mumsnet for no apparent reason apart from what I assume is an underlying resentment that they are proactively looking after themselves.

I run a lot around the streets and parks of London. I purposefully choose to go out mainly late at night after work when it's quieter. However at the weekend it's nice to have daylight. Every single run I jump into the road multiple times to avoid families / groups of friends who are walking four abreast on pavements, or because a dog walker is on one side of the path and their dog is on the other so the lead is stretched across like a string hurdle.

As soon as I see someone walking towards me, and assuming there's no traffic, I go into the road to give them space. I see plenty of other runners doing the same. I'm sorry to those of you who have felt like someone is breathing down your neck, that's not enjoyable. But most of us are trying our very best to keep ourselves and everyone else safe!

rawalpindithelabrador · 02/03/2021 12:46

@ReverendRicketyCricket

I want Piers Morgan to shut up and fuck off. What chance of that do you think?
Applause!
goldielockdown2 · 02/03/2021 12:46

I don't know how he dares. You'd think he'd want to gloss over anything to do with covid rules since his holiday at Christmas.
