Aibu to flush cat litter down the loo?

Before you all leap on me, I have the cat litter tray beside our toilet in the bathroom. When she poos I scoop it out & flush it, though the poo has cat litter stuck to it. Wees get scooped, bagged & binned at the end of the day. So not too much cat litter is going down the loo but some is. I'm worried it might collect at some point in the sewer.. Blush The cat litter I use is the white Catsan. What d'you think?

I've been doing the same as you for 20 years and it's never caused a problem. The small amount sticking to the poos isn't enough to cause a blockage.

StanfordPines · 01/03/2021 18:17

I noticed the other day that the cat litter I use says that it’s flushable on the bag.

Personally I wouldn’t. There are lots of thing that you can flush but can cause problems

Andylion · 01/03/2021 18:21

I live in a condo, so it might be different if more than one resident flushed litter, but we had thousands of dollars of damage due to "flushable" litter.

BerniesMittens · 01/03/2021 18:22

I wouldn't. You shouldn't put anything other than toilet tissue into the sewage system. Cat litter could also introduce toxoplasma into the water system.

Sparrowfeeder · 01/03/2021 18:23

Yes, YABU! There is an issue with this being harmful for wildlife as domestic pet viruses can contaminate the water supply. Our water and sewage systems are set up for human use, and cannot kill any Toxoplasma gondii present in cat faeces. I think from memory this could particularly affect already struggling creatures like otters, dolphins, whales.

Why is it necessary to do this harmful thing?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/03/2021 18:25

Yanbu #supportlocalplumbers
😁

Just an fyi if something says it's flushable, it doesn't mena nothing bad will ever happen. Just look at flushable tissues etc.

Aprilx · 01/03/2021 18:25

There are a few cat litters that are labelled as flushable but Catsan is certainly not one of them! The flushable litters are typically wood or paper based but personally i would never flush those either.

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/03/2021 18:27

Cat waste shouldn't be flushed down the toilet so YABU, it contains toxics which the water systems aren't set up to deal with and can cause problems with wildlife down the line too.

Zevia · 01/03/2021 18:28

You shouldn't be flushing cat poop in the first place.

PattyPan · 01/03/2021 18:28

Yabu, don’t flush anything except human waste or loo roll!

asizmanners · 01/03/2021 18:29

Yabu, and lazy. You want us to tell you it's fine but it's just not, see other posters have mentioned the harm to wildlife already.

If you had a septic tank and had to pay for your own laziness it would be a different story. Funny how people's behaviour changes when it becomes a problem they have to deal with and pay for.

You know it's not ok, op.

Chocolatehabit · 01/03/2021 18:29

No one should be flushing cat poo at all!!! Their worms and toxoplasmosis can get into the water supply. The water treatment works are not designed for animal waste.

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 01/03/2021 18:31

I can't believe you thought this was in any way ok? YABVU

AnExcellentWalker · 01/03/2021 18:32

YABU and lazy. It can be deadly to certain wild animals. Put it in a bag, in the bin, or whatever other cat owners do.

PercyPiginaWig · 01/03/2021 18:35

The selfishness and stupidity of some people is something else, when the two factors combine things can get really bad.

Fuckityfucksake · 01/03/2021 18:38

Yes YABU for the many reasons others have posted.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/03/2021 18:40

The cat litter I use is flushable

BikeRunSki · 01/03/2021 18:42

Cat litter is usually a form of clay (kaolinite, bentonite) in pellets. Apart from the hygiene aspects, you are introducing sediment into the sewage network, which could well cause a blockage somewhere.

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 01/03/2021 18:42

@IHaveBrilloHair - doesn't mean it's safe to flush cat shit into our water system.

BikeRunSki · 01/03/2021 18:43

in time
I’m not suggesting a few pellets of cat litter will fill up a culvert immediately!!

Keepcountingyourfingers · 01/03/2021 18:44

Good god this is disgusting.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/03/2021 18:46

Sorry, that was a quick post, cooking dinner!
I don't flush it, but it does say you can so I'm guessing lots of people do, the same as wet wipes etc.

AdaFuckingShelby · 01/03/2021 18:46

Well you did ask OP Grin

DuzzyFuck · 01/03/2021 18:47

We have the same as you (litter tray beside the toilet) and I buy dog poo bags, scoop it, bag it, and throw it out. Easy and no worries about litter blocking anything up.
