Aibu to flush cat litter down the loo?

MonsterMunchies8 · 01/03/2021 18:13

Before you all leap on me, I have the cat litter tray beside our toilet in the bathroom. When she poos I scoop it out & flush it, though the poo has cat litter stuck to it. Wees get scooped, bagged & binned at the end of the day. So not too much cat litter is going down the loo but some is. I'm worried it might collect at some point in the sewer.. Blush The cat litter I use is the white Catsan. What d'you think?

Why you shouldn’t flush flushable cat litter

MadeOfStarStuff · 01/03/2021 18:47

YABU and disgusting for all the reasons already mentioned

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 01/03/2021 18:49

“ I've been doing the same as you for 20 years and it's never caused a problem”

You’ve heard of fat bergs right? People wash fat down their drains and it doesn’t cause them a problem - it causes problems further down the pipes when it combines with baby wipes and cat litter etc etc etc.

Pee, poo, paper. The three things we can flush.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/03/2021 18:50

I used to until I changed to clumping litter. To be fair he only uses his tray very occasionally, most times he goes outside. I now use dog poo bags (although I'm surprised no one has complained yet about them being bad for the environment!) and put them in the bin.

Chloemol · 01/03/2021 18:59

No animal faeces should be flushed down the toilet. Whilst the link says dog, the actual article says none

Not cat poo Studies are showing that toxoplasmosis, a parasite found in cat feces, has infected marine mammals and otters. ... Toxoplasmosis can cause brain damage and death in sea otters
eightxmaspaws · 01/03/2021 19:03

@MonsterMunchies8 go online and look up the flushable eco stuff. It's actually not expensive (it might look like it is initially but trust me it isn't) because you only flush what has been used, so it's pretty economical. If your litter tray is next to the loo then it makes sense. Please don't flush the other stuff though.

Shmithecat2 · 01/03/2021 19:04

YABVVVVU. I have six cats, so I get it's a bit of a chore, but you must bag and bin ALL the waste. Stop flushing anything like that down the toilet. As Sula says - if it isn't pee, paper or poo, you mustn't flush it down the loo.

Georgyporky · 01/03/2021 19:05

Only 3 things supposed to be flushed in U.K. :-

pee
poo
paper (as in toilet paper)

Anything else can cause blockages - as my Water Company keep telling my stupid neighbours . I need to call them out every 2 months as there are some stupid arseholes in my road.

FireflyRainbow · 01/03/2021 19:06

For god's sake OP 😂😂 obviously YABU. Gave me a laugh though.

Tlollj · 01/03/2021 19:07

Oh no I didn’t mean cat poo. Only human pee poo and paper.

ChangedName4TheSakeOfIt · 01/03/2021 19:10

It's probably fine for your toilet and pipe system. It'll just be your neighbour's hit with a massive plumbing bill as your cat litter accumulates as it passes under their property.

Poop, pee, puke and loo paper. That's it. That's all that should be going down the toilet. Ever.

nonevernotever · 01/03/2021 19:12

Yabu for all the reasons given. In our previous tenement flat someone further down the street used to do this. It caused a blockage and started backing up under the floorboards of the ground floor flat in our block

doctorhamster · 01/03/2021 19:13

I can't believe anyone genuinely doesn't know you can't flush animal shit down the toilet Confused

Travis1 · 01/03/2021 19:15

FML are people really this fucking stupid?!?

FemaleAndLearning · 01/03/2021 19:15

Animal poo should not be put down the toilet.
Remember the three p's and only
flush poo (human) , pee and paper (toilet).
Some parasites can out live the sewage treatment process.

And I say this as someone who was hit with a £200 unblocking fee for wipes, litter and Sanpro etc that had blocked up under our patio. OUR sewage system was okay as our waste went in after the blockage but the next door neighbours, who were the only house before us and therefore solely responsible tried to tell us that as the block was under our property. The council said it was our responsibility to pay. We just declined to have the work done at all. WE didn't need to. The neighbours forked out in the end but technically we could have been liable,

I'm aware of the three Ps but whenever I see mention of them I wonder what you're supposed to do with vomit? It's not something I do very often (as in not for years) but surely it's ok to flush vomit? What on earth else are you supposed to do with it?
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 01/03/2021 19:23

Four Ps, and call it puke rather than vomit?

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/03/2021 19:23

Well if I need to vom I do so in the toilet.
I assume that's ok?

echt · 01/03/2021 19:30

I've never put animal waste in the toilet, nor am I advocating it.

BUT

Humans have toxoplasmosis
Humans have roundworms

So how is that OK to flush?

MrMeSeeks · 01/03/2021 19:34

Yabu! Ofcourse you shouldn't be flushing it!
Just get up and put it in the bloody bin.

Chocolatehabit · 01/03/2021 19:41

Rarely in comparison to dogs and cats. Most people don’t have round worms. Also the common round worm that humans have is threadworm which is relatively harmless compared to the types which animals commonly carry.

Honest un-snarky question, purely for info: when my daft floof dog does a tiny poo in the house, I'll pick it up with a tissue and flush it down the loo. She's wormed and up on all her jabs, is that a problem? How? It's so tiny and she is perfectly healthy.
