Aibu to flush cat litter down the loo?

MonsterMunchies8 · 01/03/2021 18:13

Before you all leap on me, I have the cat litter tray beside our toilet in the bathroom. When she poos I scoop it out & flush it, though the poo has cat litter stuck to it. Wees get scooped, bagged & binned at the end of the day. So not too much cat litter is going down the loo but some is. I'm worried it might collect at some point in the sewer.. Blush The cat litter I use is the white Catsan. What d'you think?

No. No. No. You do not want to find out why that's a really bad idea over time. But your worries are right on track.

@RickJames

Honest un-snarky question, purely for info: when my daft floof dog does a tiny poo in the house, I'll pick it up with a tissue and flush it down the loo. She's wormed and up on all her jabs, is that a problem? How? It's so tiny and she is perfectly healthy.

As posted above.
I can’t believe you have a dog that craps in your house, no matter how small. Just train it.

crapbuttrue · 01/03/2021 20:19

When my cat uses the litter tray I use the compostable that come free from the council and put them in my main bin. Just scoop it up with hand in bag so no need for plastic scoop that then needs washing.

m0therofdragons · 01/03/2021 20:28

I don’t have a cat but I honestly had no clue it would be an issue as human poo goes down the loo so it hasn’t occurred to me that their would be an issue with wormed cat’s poo. On the face of it it sounds more hygienic than putting it in a bag in the bin but looking at the water company link it appears not.

I don’t think it’s lazy but I think it’s unrealistic to expect people to seek this info out. I’ve never seen this on our local water board leaflets. Surely wild animals poo all over the country getting it in rivers and streams so how is that different? I’m a bit puzzled on the science and while I’m happy to be educated I find the outrage of some posters rather bizarre. You can be an intelligent adult and not be fully informed on toilets.

littleloopylou · 01/03/2021 20:30

This is utterly catshit...er, I mean batshit.

floppybit · 01/03/2021 20:33

No!!! It kills fish in rivers!!!

Crankley · 01/03/2021 20:38

If you want y6our pipes clogged up on a regular basis then brilliant idea.

Even better you should train your cat to go to the loo on the loo and then flush:

LaceyBetty · 01/03/2021 20:46

I didn't know this about cat poo. Litter and blockages, yes, but not the health issues around poo. I'm not lazy or stupid and now I know. So glad I didn't ask the question given the wild vitriol towards the OP from some posters! Does it make you feel better?

BoredMumofTwins · 01/03/2021 20:47

Flushing cat litter, even a tiny amount, is a really really bad idea. Our sewer blocked in our road, unfortunately we were the nearest manhole to it, which meant the entire road's crap came out on our drive over a 24 hr period. Please do not flush anything down there just because it is convenient for you. Only toilet paper and human poo. Please no wet wipes or cat litter or anything that could cause a blockage. If you knew the devastation a blocked pipe would cause you would be much more careful.

Rae34 · 01/03/2021 20:47

I did this once. I tossed mainly poo with a few stones in thinking it would be fine. It wasn't - it blocked the toilet.

Marble2302 · 01/03/2021 20:53

My cat litter tray is next to my toilet but I still scoop it stick it im a nappy bag and take it out to my refuse bin. I would never put it down the toilet that is rank.

Nanny0gg · 01/03/2021 20:55

I know it's difficult in small homes but I couldn't bear the thought of a litter tray in my bathroom.

Envy not envy

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/03/2021 21:03

Where else would you put it @Nanny0gg? Surely the bathroom is the logical place!

murbblurb · 01/03/2021 21:20

Labels lie - nothing is flushable except human waste and toilet paper.

Having a pet commits you to years of bagging or burying faeces. That is what you signed up for.

Better the bathroom than the kitchen (as I've seen far too often) surely?!?

Without the luxury of a utility room or boot room, where would you suggest is better?

RickJames · 02/03/2021 11:29

@Disressingtimes

Thanks for the link - I'm quite disappointed/ disgusted that water processing can't cope with parasites!

Don't really understand your outrage about my dog though. I'm talking about her having the odd accident not a general shitting policy Grin We don't have carpets and so it's really not the end of the world.

Pets aren't people and they sometimes, for all kinds of different reasons, decide that they are going to poo indoors despite their training.

UsedUpUsername · 02/03/2021 11:52

@echt

I've never put animal waste in the toilet, nor am I advocating it.

BUT

Humans have toxoplasmosis
Humans have roundworms

So how is that OK to flush?

I think cats shed live bacteria? Not sure, but if your cat doesn’t go outside it’s very unlikely they’ll have it.
UsedUpUsername · 02/03/2021 11:54

That said, we flush cat poo down the toilet but bag the wood litter (you could compost as well). We’ve got a nifty double-decker litter box that sifts the sawdust into a pullout drawer, wouldn’t have it any other way. Very easy

cocopops · 02/03/2021 11:56

I used to do this but it caused no end of problems with the drains and ended up being expensive to fix. I now scoop into a dog poo bag and dispose of in bin!
