Nectar points are pretty much not worth it?!

I’ve just been looking at my Nectar statement, we have approx £40 worth of points. Historically I would have have traded these in for Pizza Express vouchers or Amazon vouchers.
I’ve just been looking at where these can now be spent and there’s so little you can do with them now!
What do other people do with theirs?!

I just occasionally check and get them taken off my shopping bill. They are still more useful than waitrose points.
I think tesco are best value for points

Skigal86 · 27/02/2021 13:18

In the past we’ve used them for additional Xmas bits for friends and family kids when the double up is on. Now they are an Avios partner they’ll be paying the difference for taking my daughter on my husbands fabulous (very delayed) 40th trip next year. She was under 2 on our original dates so it will cost us a lot more Avios now. We’ve actually moved back to shopping at Sainsbury’s because of the Avios partnership

They and all the other schemes are something from history that I am sure most supermarkets would abolish if it did not put them at a disadvantage. I just dock them off a bill at the till.

Just think of all the lovely data that supermarkets get on you from loyalty cards. That’s why they do it.
daisyjgrey · 27/02/2021 13:29

I save mine up for the food shop at Christmas, they get collected from the supermarket and petrol station, ebay and I've just insured the car through them which came with a bonus and double points on all shopping and fuel purchases.

It's worth getting the app, they often have bonuses on there and extras after you've shopped, I've collected around 500 points this month just in 'extra' ones through the app.

I can't get worked up at supermarkets knowing which cheese brand I prefer, and I shop a lot online so my email address etc aren't exactly top secret either.

We got £50 free in their promotion and I have traded in Avios air miles into nectar recently - think we have around £300 , just building them up incase we need to replace an electrical item or fancy a load of free food and drink

Okbussitout · 27/02/2021 14:06

I'd be shopping at sainsburys anyway so I just see tham as an extra. I tend to spend them on stuff at sainsburys so shopping of home wear and clothing.

My point was more that loyalty schemes are designed to benefit the retailer in terms of big data rather than the customer in terms of rewards.

My husband won that two years ago. Complete surprise!
LeSquigh · 27/02/2021 15:15

As someone else has said if you shop at Sainsburys use the app because it racks up extra points. There are offers added every Friday morning which gives you extra points off things you actually buy. Nectar is one of my most used apps.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 27/02/2021 15:17

Why wouldn't you use your nectar card, even for low rewards? It costs you nothing and takes a few seconds to swipe it.

Because the data companies collect from nectar card usage is used to maximise prices. Eg if they know most people will buy packets of mince whether it's on deal or not, they wont put it on deal any more.

twinkleprincess2020 · 27/02/2021 15:19

I find mine add up fast got myself a ipod just before Christmas.
I do surveys though to boost my points

luanmapo · 27/02/2021 15:20

I shop with Sainsbury’s weekly and use the nectar app for bonus points on my shopping and esso fuel.
Last year I built up £240 and used it on my Xmas food and booze shop. Already built up £45 and it’s only end of Feb.
In addition to this we have our home insurance via Sainsbury’s bank, so we get double nectar points each month.
For me, Nectar is the best retail points on the market.
Depends how you shop though.

ItWasntMyFault · 27/02/2021 15:35

I use them for the food shop at Christmas.

Graphista · 27/02/2021 15:40

I have both a nectar card and clubcard and I’m terrible for not using the points

I’d really appreciate guidance if someone is willing ? I used to be good at this stuff I’m out of practice

I’m currently housebound (hoping to possibly change that this year at some point)

Nectar

I used to shop with Sainsburys which is how I acquired these. Have almost £90 worth According to app

I no longer shop or wish to shop with Sainsburys so no idea how or where I might be able to use these points seeing as I don’t go anywhere or do anything really

Clubcard

£62 worth of vouchers (one expires tomorrow only £2 but I’m annoyed at the thought of losing out)

597 points

I’m also with Tesco for mobile phone but far as I can see I’m not linked to it for points which I think I can be? And which I think I did request at some point but which isn’t showing on Clubcard app...ok I’ve just tried to link phone to Clubcard via text as per advice on app and it says it’s already linked but I can’t see points info on app and what’s also weird is text says “Clubcard ending in xxxx” but I can’t find my Clubcard no on the Clubcard app to see if the numbers match

I believe using points/vouchers for groceries is the least efficient use of them? But as I don’t buy/use much else (very occasional purchases from amazon, Argos or Currys) but could possibly be tempted to buy from other places if I’m essentially getting stuff “free” - I’m not sure what’s best to use them for or how best to use them?

“Just paid my mobile phone bill with doubled up Clubcard vouchers. Money for nothing when I shop at Tesco anyway” love to know more about this

Op they’ll probably regret it if they send ME that feedback offer! Main reason I’ve stopped shopping with Sainsburys is their shit attitude and behaviour - to me personally, at start of lockdown and to disabled and elderly customers generally!

Off topic but the most surprising revelation on this thread so far for me is that ipods are still a thing! I thought they’d have been made obsolete by virtue that most people have phones which do the same as iPods now plus other stuff too

@Sh05

How to get an easy 2,000 Nectar points Martin had two main Nectar tips whilst speaking on the show. He firstly explained how to get up to 2,000 Nectar points for free, adding that it was "dead easy" to do.

This is because Nectar is offering all existing members between 100 and 2,000 totally free bonus points - equivalent to between 50p and £10 off your shopping - via its app until Tuesday 9 March – there's no spend required, so it's a no brainer. If you're new to Nectar, you can sign up and get 250 points (equivalent to £1.25).

To get this, you need to log in to your Nectar account, or sign up for one, via the free app (available on iOS and Android), and on the home screen select the 'Juicy Points Boost' tile. You'll be shown how many bonus points you've been awarded and this should be instantly added to your regular Nectar points balance.

Martin explained that if you can't see the offer, you may need to update the app to the latest version, compatible with most phones from the past few years running iOS 12.0 or later, or Android 5.0 or later (you can do this in the App Store or Google Play).

Thank you! Just did this and got 2000 points :-)
Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/02/2021 17:25

Like others, we save our Nectar points all year and take it off our Christmas food shop. It adds up to a good amount, usually more than £100.

We shop in lots of other shops too (London) so probably only a third of our food shopping comes from Sainsburys.

The Nectar card isn't enough of an incentive to make us go to Sainsburys if somewhere else is more convenient.

I can't get worked up at supermarkets knowing which cheese brand I prefer, and I shop a lot online so my email address etc aren't exactly top secret either.

We had a "corner shop" in the 70s and 80s. We "collected" loads of data re our customers' shopping habits without the need for cards, databases, etc. We just remembered what our regular customers usually bought and also had some big ledgers for the account customers/home delivery customers where we wrote down everything they bought. We'd regularly "data-mine" the ledgers for stock ordering (past purchasing being used for future projections etc). We'd also "remind" customers if we thought they'd forgotten to ask for something they usually bought, and would "suggest" new things they may like. Think of Arkwright in Open All Hours - it's a lot closer to the truth than modern people realise! It's all exactly the same as supermarkets and loyalty card schemes, just on a bigger scale. I really can't get wound up about knowing that Sainsbury's have me on record as usually buying MrKipling Treacle Tart, especially when it means I get nectar points and money off vouchers for the things I'd buy anyway.
Graphista · 27/02/2021 19:37

@twinkleprincess2020 wasn't a criticism I was just surprised! I use Spotify for the music I want to choose exactly what I listen to and otherwise listen to digital radio - mainly absolute 80's

I'm a keen amateur photographer when not impacted by health and so I understand the appeal of cameras, phone cameras are MUCH improved but there are still many things you can't do with a phone camera that you can do with a "proper" camera, hell I've an old 35mm film camera still stashed somewhere

@Kazzyhoward you've got my mouth watering for treacle tart now! Not had that in AGES!

Crunchymum · 27/02/2021 19:39

We save them for Xmas and get the chocs / biscuits / sweets / booze.

Although I notice every year I have less and less to spend, despite doing a weekly online shop there. We spend at least £100 per shop... which means we spend approx £5k a year with them Shock
Wowser.

cheapskatemum · 27/02/2021 20:39

We don't have a Sainsbury's near us where we live now. When I'm near one I'll shop there and if I need petrol and they have a petrol station at that branch I'll fill up and use any nectar points on my card to get money off fuel.
