To be thinking about starting adult webcam work?

StaringAtMyWalls · 24/02/2021 23:01

I'm in a really bad financial situation.

Due to physical and mental health I cannot work full time, I struggle to even work a part time schedule (good and bad days), but part time isn't nearly enough to pay my basic bills.

I've honestly tried all avenues already - applied for LCWRA and PIP numerous times and keep getting declined even though my issues are genuine, I already live in a cheap area rent wise, cut down all bills.

I'm considering doing webcam work as I could completely choose my own hours around medical appointments, insomnia, and bad days I could take time off. It would reduce my social anxiety as it's behind a screen and if I freaked out I could just shut down the screen.

I am a shy person though and I have a LOT of stretch marks. I'm not sure I have the balls for it tbh.

I don't care if anyone finds out or records me etc, so long as it doesn't massively impact my chances of a 'regular' job - I'm happy to accept that if found out I won't be able to be a politician (!!) or work with children or say as a lawyer (!!), but would it stop me doing care home, retail or cleaning work?

Does anyone have any experience of webcam work?

Well I mean it could if your potential boss recognised you from the webcam work. I did have a colleague in retail though who openly admitted he was a male escort.

Shetoshe · 24/02/2021 23:08

Don't do it OP. If you already struggle with your mental health this is not an avenue you want to go down. It's seedy and degrading. Could you not get agency work of some sort so you could pick and choose your own shifts depending on how you're feeling?

VestaTilley · 24/02/2021 23:09

Don’t do this. It’s not empowering, you’ll feel degraded, you won’t be happier or more fulfilled by doing it.

If you’re ill this will not help you. Don’t do it.

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 24/02/2021 23:12

Agree with pp. Have you ever appealed the dwps decisions?

StaringAtMyWalls · 24/02/2021 23:29

Yes I've appealed the dwp decisions a few times. I've had help to fill out the forms and appeal too. It seems because I can do the very basics of living most of the time, but with great difficulty and not every day (showering, preparing a meal, short journeys to familiar places, coping with a change to appt times, basic housework etc), that they think I am 'fit for some work' and don't qualify. I most certainly am not!! Some days I can't get out of bed, I have panic attacks almost daily, insomnia cause of physical and mental pain, flashbacks from very serious trauma, brain fog.

I don't see that I have much choice to be honest. It's getting to the point that it's going to be some form of sex work or lose my home. I'm in so much debt since I haven't been able to work.

I can get agency work, although it took nearly a year to get accepted for agencies due to lack of references. I had to leave the agency work about a year ago when my PTSD worsened due to COVID hitting and I had a massive mental breakdown (as in not in touch with reality breakdown, the worst I've ever had).

I could try go back to agency or part time work, but the problem still remains that I cannot do more than part time hours. And part time doesn't even pay my basic bills.

liverpool1981 · 24/02/2021 23:41

I think this could be more damaging. What if you meet a partner how would you explain your career even to friends and family??

StaringAtMyWalls · 24/02/2021 23:53

I don't care about explaining anything to family / friends / future partners. I suppose I don't have the luxury of that choice. I've told my sister I'm considering it.

It really is getting to the stage I won't have a choice. I really can't keep missing my bill payments and getting further into debt.

Sex work makes me anxious, but not being able to pay bills makes me more anxious I think.

If your mental health is bad now web camming is going to make it worse. There’s not as much money in it as you’d think either. And even if there was, that money isn’t worth potentially wrecking your state of mind. I hope you find a different solution to your money issues for your own sake.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 25/02/2021 00:08

I’ve had friends who’ve done camming and it’s not all that lucrative. There’s so much free porn out there that you are competing against. Also, you can expect earnings to drop off after a few weeks when you’re not the new girl and a novelty anymore. I’d also be wary of things like Onlyfans. There are headlines about women making thousands, but again, that’s a small percentage of people, often established celebs and porn stars.

You could try the adult texting jobs. Crap pay but at least you are safe and anonymous. Or there are lots of remote jobs you can do. Not huge amounts of money in it but might tide you over.

I know it's not that much money in it, I've been on webcam forums.

I need about £350 a week, if I can get a part time 'normal' job then less.

Who helped you with your appeals? Did you get help with the original application? How long ago was this? Have your health conditions changed since your last applications?q

Citizen's Advice helped me with multiple appeals. I did my very original application myself though. No my conditions haven't changed much. My most recent appeal has just been rejected last month ): ):

Indeed is a good start for looking for remote jobs. Search for remote live chat or remote customer service and there are quite a few.

Can’t remember the name of the texting company. There’s a money forum on here that often has threads about those sorts of jobs

I think you've got your head in the clouds if you think you can earn £350 a week under those circumstances.

Plus, 'I could just shut down the screen'. Errr no you can't unless you want to get the sack. People don't pay good money to have the 'service' ended in the middle.

I don't know what the answer is for you but it's certainly not sex work.

Thanks for this advice on which search terms to use. I'll certainly try look into this.

You don't 'get the sack' if you shut down the screen . You can't - that's not how it works. I suppose you could get bad 'reviews' but there's no way to get the sack - it's self employed.

I don't know how else I'm supposed to make enough to live.

Contact fightback.......they're on Facebook and will help you process your claim. They have an extremely high success rate. Quite often it's literally down to the wording. They'll support you through any appeals and court processes too.

Let's face it you have nothing to lose. And it does sound like you'll be able to claim some pip.

JesusAteMyHamster · 25/02/2021 00:45

Here. I really do rate these guys.......they've helped a lot of people I know. www.facebook.com/FightBack4Justice/

Could you start a cleaning service. I know a girl and she is flying with her little business. I just think that webcam business is sleazy and may lead you to prostitution which could then lead you to drugs to numb the pain. Can you maybe house share with someone to split bills. Or if you have debt speak to a debt advisor.

RozHuntleysStump · 25/02/2021 08:09

Don’t do webcam work. For a start off there is too much competition and you need to want to do it to be any good at it. It is very degrading and not conducive to good mental health. Not only that, you’re not ‘working’ constantly, you’re spending a lot of time waiting for customers or trying to lure them in to paying.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/02/2021 08:10

What kind of work have you previously done?
Webcam will just deteriorate your mh further.
Any of these kind of roles:
Dog walker
Cleaner
Ironing service
....any skills you could capitalise on: cooking, drawing, mending etc?

Cpl1586407 · 25/02/2021 08:15

It's not actually that easy to make significant money doing webcam work - there's a lot of people doing it right now especially since covid, there's lots of competition from people who have been doing other kinds of sex work but have obviously been limited by the pandemic. I know it might seem like easy money but it's not as lucrative as you might imagine.

ScaredOfDinosaurs · 25/02/2021 08:43

You can obviously write English to a good standard. Have you looked at doing audio transcription work with rev? All you need is a laptop/desktop computer, an internet connection and headphones. It isn't massively well paid but it is completely flexible, you choose how much you do and when. You could fit that around your medical needs and other responsibilities quite easily.
