AIBU to report 'man with a van' who is burning the rubbish collected in their garden??

I know the job situation is awful at the moment, the financial support is dire and people need to do what they need to do to earn some money and put food on the table. But surely setting yourself up (i.e advertising on Facebook) as a man with a van who is willing to collect waste for cash and then burning said waste in a domestic garden is going a bit far. We've had 2 days of bonfires so far - black smoke and a hell of a stench.

People have been messaging him asking him to collect all-sorts, from bags of domestic waste to old furniture and random bric a brac. He's not fly tipping it which is a good thing but daily bonfires (all of which have been started in the daytime) is really annoying. They have only come up with this genius idea this week but seeing how popular this 'service' is at the moment it could go on a while.

So AIBU to report it?

Absolutely - some stuff in there could be toxic waste, apart from the anti social aspect of being smoked out by rubbish burning. I'd report without any delay.

YoniAndGuy · 24/02/2021 15:07

Wow yes! That's completely illegal for all sorts of reasons. Council environmental team asap.

YoniAndGuy · 24/02/2021 15:08

And screenshot the facebook posts (with your own ID not on there, obviously).

2tired2bewitty · 24/02/2021 15:08

Absolutely report it, who knows what kind of stuff he’s releasing into the atmosphere, and what is he going to do with the mess that is left behind?

Porcupineintherough · 24/02/2021 15:11

Of course report it. He'll just have to factor in disposal costs for his service when he charges clients.

LostToucan · 24/02/2021 15:14

Yes - it’s illegal.

Bet he doesn’t have a waste carriers licence either.

LostToucan · 24/02/2021 15:17

And his customers could also face fines of up to £400.

ginghamstarfish · 24/02/2021 15:23

Of course you should, but he'll probably just move to flytipping. Sounds like an irresponsible twat, hope the police will pay him a visit.

thereisonlyoneofme · 24/02/2021 15:25

Furniture can give o ff cyanide gas when burning (learnt this when working for Fire Dept in NHS)

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/02/2021 15:26

Of course yanbu.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/02/2021 15:29

Please do report it, PP have given all the reasons.

Housholders answering these adverts have a responsibility to make sure that their waste is properly disposed off by authorised routes.

Council here has a message on their site requesting no bonfires during Covid.

You can report anonymously on FixMyStreet.

Emeraldshamrock · 24/02/2021 19:05

Yes report.
I'm sick of illegal dumpers.

makingmyway10 · 24/02/2021 19:13

Yes! Please report him , it is dangerous if nothing else! There may be chemicals and harmful toxins in the rubbish burned. It is also unlawful. Report him.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 24/02/2021 19:16

Yes report as others have said its dangerous , if he wanted to earn a living doing this he could get a waste licence and do it properly

ItsJackieWeaverBitch · 24/02/2021 19:19

Definitely report him, what a fucking idiot he is.

MrMeSeeks · 24/02/2021 19:20

Yes report! I cant have any windows open when people have fires as i cant breathe, this would be horrendous for me.
What a idiot.

Glad to know I'm not unreasonable and have let the local council know. Seems quite a few people in our local area were fed up this afternoon too as quite a few have been very vocal about reporting to 101. Pretty sure there is no waste carriers licence as it seems quite a hair brained scheme. He seems to be pretty desperate for cash as he's on tonight asking if any jobs going at all, willing to do anything and travel anywhere. Must be awful to be so desperate but it is just very dangerous and anti-social.
