That I invited my friends over for the afternoon and they turn up now at 5pm

Just as we are starting to sort out tea and then we will be getting the girls to bed and I won't actually be able to spend any time with them!

Have been phoning them since 3 wondering if they were still coming with no reply, am really pissed off and have PMT big time which is why I am in here trying to calm down on the PC, rather than talking to them.

Are they childfree? Childfree people have no concept of what 'the afternoon' means.

Lulumamaintheskywithfireworks · 04/11/2007 17:12

did you arrange a time? were they just popping in or coming for a meal or afternoon tea?

i can see why you are cross, 5 pm is the start of tea, bath and bed time

do they have children?

PestoPyromaniacMonster · 04/11/2007 17:12

Grrr!! I'd be fuming too. Poor you!

weirdbird · 04/11/2007 17:19

Yes they are child free, they are my 2 best friends, I havn't seen them for over a month and was really looking forward to seeing them.

I spoke to them yesterday to see if they were coming to lunch as well. Which they decided not to do.

But they know me and us far too well to not realise that I won't really have a spare 5 min between now and 8pm and the girls where really looking forward to the visit and we have sat around all afternoon waiting for them to arrive. Could have actually done something!

rope them in to help with the DCs and you can chat as you get the children sorted

KbearYourPoppywithPride · 04/11/2007 17:28

remember why they are your best friends, forget that they are inconsiderate today and go have a hug a coffee and get them to muck in with bathtime!

MaureenMLove · 04/11/2007 17:59

How old are your children?

dinny · 04/11/2007 18:04

my childless friends always turn up a bit late, don't let it bother you - your dc could have bath and stories done by them and then you could shard some wine. Chill and enjoy, I say.

mazzystar · 04/11/2007 18:05

its the pmt talking

one of them can make tea, the other can do bathtime and stories, whilst you pop round to the offy for some nice wine

turn it into a positive and have a lovely evening.

mazzystar · 04/11/2007 18:05

great minds dinny!

lucyellensmum · 04/11/2007 18:06

it is the whole, childless and dont get it scenario. My best friends are a couple and i love them dearly but they have no concept of the fact that actually, i have to be up at 6 every single day and i often dont get a full nights sleep so no i dont really want to be chatting til one am, thankyou very much. They also dont realise that bedtime is a no no too. They do, but they dont if you see what i mean. They have turned up totally at the wrong time etc after having said they would come, but they have realised and apologised. Also would have not welshed on an arranged visit!

I would be really pissed off, i would go through your bed time routine, if they still want to stick around great, you can chat afterwards, if not, then i would presume this was a duty visit (my friends are good at those too) and that they dont really want to be there, sorry if that sounds harsh but just speaking as i see things.

saltire · 04/11/2007 18:06

Get one to do bath, the other to wash the dishes or read a story, get yourself a glass of wine and chill

dinny · 04/11/2007 18:08

Gosh, that sounds very bitter, LucyEllensmum - do you like actually like your friends??

Mazzystar

lucyellensmum · 04/11/2007 18:14

actually now you put it like that dinny - no, i cant stand them, fuckers Seriously though, they are lovely they just keep different hours to us, i think i was just trying to make the point that the OPs friends are being inconsiderate simply because they dont get the whole parenting thing and being ruled by routine (to a certain degree). Its not because they are crap friends, id still be pissed off, but then i would just tell my friends, sorry, you have to fuck off now, or wait til ive put DD to bed.

Rhubarb · 04/11/2007 18:20

You know, people with kids do this too!

i agree i'd be a bit hacked off if i'd sat at home waiting for them for hours, but then again sometimes i like a bit of downtime at home and its better than people arriving too goddamned early when you are in a state of undress and the lunch is still in supermarket

Bouncingturtle · 04/11/2007 18:29

YANBU, if I was one of your friends I would have clarified with you beforehand what time you meant when you said afternoon. But then again I would have done that regardless of whether you had children or not!

nORAYNonmybonfireplease · 04/11/2007 18:35

Thing is, if these friends had children you'd probably be more understanding, It's easy to lose track of time, some people are just bad at being on time!
Although, I'd probably have been a bit annoyed too.

Well I calmed down and am making the most of it, DH is out for the evening so one is in the lounge playing with youngest and other is upstairs reading bedtime stories.

It was mainly the PMT talking as I am usually very laid back about pretty much everything and I think they are very used to that.

But I think it was mainly that I had been really looking forward to this afternoon all week and was disappointed.

Havn't said anything and won't unless they do, its Long Way Down in a hour and half, and Ewan will help me chill even more...

lol, Lucyellensmum!

brimfull · 04/11/2007 19:44

tbh I think it's quite rude of you to be on the pc while they are visiting you.

ShinyHappyRocketsGoingBANG · 04/11/2007 19:45

Course they are child free?! Did that need to be asked??!
