to think internet shaming people for legal behaviour is shitty behaviour

My FB is awash with petitions to ban some South African woman for posting pictures of giraffe hunting. People are calling her murderous scum and all sorts. Now I'm not a fan of trophy hunting personally but like it or not, it's legal. AIBU to think that joining a baying internet mob to hound a woman who has done nothing illegal is pretty shitty behaviour in its own right? And no I won't be signing your petition. Lobby to make trophy hunting illegal if you care that much.

YANBU. If it's legal, don't hound the people that do it, hound the politicians to change the law.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/02/2021 10:18

Huh?

There are plenty of practices that are legal or carry little penalty - FgM springs to mind

She deserves approbation online - it's an abhorrent practice and needs to stop

LaurieFairyCake · 24/02/2021 10:19

I mean, it's being hounded online - not getting a posse together to beat her up..

SendMeHome · 24/02/2021 10:21

Hm. Usually I’d be with you, but she posted photos of herself hunting giraffes... she invited comment. It shouldn’t be abusive, but she opened the conversation and she can close it.

Lots of things that are legal should be discouraged, not least because getting laws changed internationally is not fast, and by the time there’s any chance of trophy hunting becoming illegal, we’ll probably have no animals left to protect. Legal systems, overall, are slow and cumbersome.

KeflavikAirport · 24/02/2021 10:21

I presume you mean opprobium not approbation Laurie! Sorry but I disagree. I think being slagged off worldwide is vastly out of proportion considering that the practice is legal.

She put herself out there with her own shitty behaviour.

As long as the internet shaming isn't veering into illegal territory then there's no problem is there? If it is I'm sure the police will deal with it accordingly.

RunningFromInsanity · 24/02/2021 10:24

Killing an animal for fun might be legally right but morally most people know it’s sick.

She posted the photo for a reaction (glory and praise, I assume), she’s just getting a different one.

The more pressure we can put on people like this, hopefully the quicker it will stop,

DishedUp · 24/02/2021 10:24

Why should you not shame immoral behaviour? Personally I consider giraffe hunting a vile sport. There's lots of things that are legal but immoral

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/02/2021 10:24

There are debates to be had around it. In some places it is funding the preservation works and animals are pre selected. In others it doesn't. But calling people "murderous scum" is just pathetic when mlst of these angry ones are munching on austrich burgwrs on Christmas markets🤷🏻

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/02/2021 10:25

Ostrich. Wtf happened there😂 sorry for typos

KeflavikAirport · 24/02/2021 10:26

I don't think you can claim the moral high ground when you're joining in a massive worldwide pile on.

Yabu

I think it’s fine to comment on what people share if you feel it is morally wrong (even if it is legal).

I don’t think it’s ok to abuse people or threaten them but fine to call people out on behaviour that you call people imperial.

Also- surely she posted the picture online knowing it would be controversial?!

AIMD · 24/02/2021 10:31

Erm I meant immoral

Justcallmebebes · 24/02/2021 10:32

Personally, I think she deserves everything she gets and more

Livpool · 24/02/2021 10:34

She posted it publicly so you get bad and good comments.

Personally I think she is vile and morally bankrupt

Pukkatea · 24/02/2021 10:35

Noone who posts those sorts of pictures is naive or unaware of how much they upset people. They've done it deliberately to provoke a reaction and are getting exactly what they want.

Laws are meant to reflect what society finds immoral, but more often than should be are influenced by money and capitalism. The fact that it's legal just means enough of the right people paid enough money to make it so.

BoyTree · 24/02/2021 10:37

OP - if you are trying to generate internet outrage for those who have criticised this woman, aren't you doing the same thing? Taking issues with others' hobbies is legal as well.

Chewingle · 24/02/2021 10:38

Your stance is jumbled up.

Do you have a problem with out of proportion pile on involving name calling? Most do

Do you have a problem with critical responses to legal activity (as indicated in your OP)? Because I disagree with that stance certainly

MrsMercedes · 24/02/2021 10:38

Why would she post the pictures if not for a reaction?

Her behaviour is hideous....legal or not!

MrsMercedes · 24/02/2021 10:39

And ‘worldwide pile on’ bit dramatic eh?

GirlLovesWorld · 24/02/2021 10:39

If you kill giraffes just to pass the time of day then you're a fucking disgusting human. The best you deserve is people pointing that fact out to you.

extentioncord · 24/02/2021 10:39

Good grief no, what kind of world would we be in if nobody challenged anything?

Many awful things used to be legal but are now not, because somebody stood up and said something.

Shutting people down who have valid moral concerns simply because 'its legal' is pathetic sheep behaviour.

Nnameechanged · 24/02/2021 10:40

I'm trying to be objective here, as it's a vile thing to do and personally, I think it's deserved and have no sympathy for her.

I knew someone who was a trophy hunter (hobby, not job), through work years ago. He talked about it, but didn't "publicise" it or post photos online. I don't think he even had social media accounts. So I suppose, technically, it would be unfair if someone leaked his photos (if he took any, I don't know) and he got online abuse for it.

However this woman has obviously not wanted to hide the fact and is proudly showing off what she has done, therefore you do so knowing it's an immoral, vile "sport" and a lot of people will be quite vocal in their opposition to it. 🤷‍♀️

MrsMercedes · 24/02/2021 10:41

Another goady poster looking for trouble....

AlternativePerspective · 24/02/2021 10:41

She wanted a reaction and she got one. She can’t wine now because it wasn’t the reaction she wanted.
