To think DH should know you don’t wash dirty bed linen at 30 degrees?

I know it’s not the end of the world but honestly, he is 38 and now it’s probably going to have to go on again. He has a sweaty head and pillowcases are unlikely to be clean after this wash. I already have to do our bedding in 2 loads as it’s so big and we don’t have a spare set so it all needs to be dry and back in the bed tonight.

I’m so irritated!

@HeronLanyon what enzyme product do you use? I can't ever get my bedding crisp!

@YellowandGreenToBeSeen surely if you can afford a bed so big that the bedding that goes on it has to he washed in 2 loads, you could afford a second £20 pound primark bedding set ?

Loosen the purse strings and get another set of linen.

No offence but you sound like hard work.

Have you never done anything wrong, but tried your best??

@SquitMcJit

NHS recommend higher than 30 degrees for underwear, bedding and towels: www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-body/how-to-prevent-germs-from-spreading/

“...wash all underwear, towels and household linen at 60C, or at 40C with a bleach-based laundry product to prevent germs from spreading”

Bollocks to that! Bleach based laundry product? Not on your Nelly!

That'd kill more than germs on the bedding!

Dettol laundry cleanser is brilliant. Pop a couple of cap-fulls in with the fabric softener.

Ooh this thread just made me think of something someone here might be able to answer. What is the difference between “bio” and “non-bio” laundry powder??

I lived in the UK in my early 20s and never did work out what this meant. Detergent is not labelled like this in Australia.

No one I asked knew the answer. Even the English people I spoke to. Mind you we were all about 21. Never did occur to me ask one of my many older English relatives...

As a side note I always wash sheets in 30 degrees. Most things I was at 30 degrees actually and in when I lived in Queensland I used to only use cold water (the water there is not cold by anyone else’s standards).

A scoop of Napisan in the wash would soon sort this

We wash at 30 too.

I’d leave it this time. Agree generally, as I wash towels and bedding at 60c and clothes at 40c

Hang on a minute - we’ve just spent the last year learning exactly how fragile viruses and bacteria are in the face of 2 minutes of soapy rubbing under a running tap, but it turns out duvet cover washing is pointless unless given specialist soap, 2 hours of agitating in a drum of water, which has to be AT LEAST 60 degrees or it’s no good and you have to start all over again?

I can’t get my head around that

alanpartridge I use this. Original use to de-moss wooden decking without being harmful. Does a great job. The. Thkight well let’s try it for its primary purpose. Main thing noticed is crispness ! Partic if slightly hotter wash. I put it in close to beginning after soap cycle has ‘jiggled’ (thread term) a fair bit.

Towels and bedding are done at 60 here - as a one off I’d not do it again though

Ok so I only have one set of bedding at the moment as we decorated the bedroom and threw all of the old gritty stuff away and I treated myself to some better quality bedding which was pretty expensive. Crisp white cotton stuff and we have a super king with extra large pillows and got new duvet etc. Second set will be acquired shortly I can assure you Grin

I’m not worried about germs. It’s the grubby patch where DH lays his head and just got the purposes of keeping it bright white.

Maybe I will be surprised and it will come out sparking white when the wash finishes.

I do wash everything else apart from towels on 30 to be fair. Yes maybe it is me who is stuck in the past and now it’s not necessary to wash these things on a hotter wash.

I might be a changed woman!

I wash everything at 30° or cold because it's much better for the environment. I've not killed anyone, everything is clean and I don't smell. Try it OP.
Also buy yourself a second set of bed linen so you don't have this issue again. We own 4 sets so we can wash them at our leisure.

Gosh, woman, how dirty IS your bed linen? Hmm
The people who don't shower/bathe before getting into bed are a whole new level of filthy.
Can recall, well, somewhat, only a few times when I haven't, too pissed to be able to/care; in my colourful youth, must add.

I'm one of the most strange people when it comes to washing - green gel for whites and coloured gel for others then Woolite for some! - and separate heaps of things for different loads but even I wash at 30!!

As for the NHS guidance upthread that fills me with fear - wouldn't just be germs that gets rid of! Nope for me.

If you're worried about germs, smells etc then Dettol anti bac is handy. Goes in fabric drawer with softener and you can buy the regular one or one for sports/heavy sweating. Works wonders and works at 30 also.

I would definitely say to get another bedding set. Asda do some lovely ones and they usually tend to have sets reduced also. Not bought Primark ones in a while but they were always lovely and washed really well.

Napisan works well on stains, if there is a stain on the pillow case.

I’m probably weird but my hands feel cleaner if I wash in cold water than in hot.

I also do most laundry at 30. No need for it to be hotter

I also wash everything at 30 degrees. It's fine. Maybe your DH is wondering why you don't know this?!

That is never going to stay pristine white. Never mind crisp (although I would hate a crispy bed). I have a white set. Its not going to stay that lovely white colour though, you do know that right??

Looks lovely, Very impractical.
