To think DH should know you don’t wash dirty bed linen at 30 degrees?

I know it’s not the end of the world but honestly, he is 38 and now it’s probably going to have to go on again. He has a sweaty head and pillowcases are unlikely to be clean after this wash. I already have to do our bedding in 2 loads as it’s so big and we don’t have a spare set so it all needs to be dry and back in the bed tonight.

I’m so irritated!

Ooo i always wash my bed sheets at 95 to kill any dust mites? Do I not need to?

alanpartridgefromtheoasthouse · 23/02/2021 12:30

@HeronLanyon

alanpartridge I use this. Original use to de-moss wooden decking without being harmful. Does a great job. The. Thkight well let’s try it for its primary purpose. Main thing noticed is crispness ! Partic if slightly hotter wash. I put it in close to beginning after soap cycle has ‘jiggled’ (thread term) a fair bit.
Thank you so much! I'm going to get some!
BobbitWormNightmares · 23/02/2021 12:34

I have a separate laundry bin for kitchen clothes, that gets washed at 60'

But everything else is 30'

User7538943 · 23/02/2021 12:45

Doesn't washing all the while at 30 with liquid detergent make the machine innards all mouldy and smelly, I thought you were meant to sometimes do a wash at least at 60 with powder preferably to keep it fresh.

TangerineGenie · 23/02/2021 12:46

A 30 degree wash as a one off wouldn't phase me. I would normally do 60 because of dust mites. Don't tumble dry or iron so nothing's getting hot that way.

tinierclanger · 23/02/2021 13:01

I love a good mumsnet washing thread. 😀

I do a maintenance wash occasionally, when the machine reminds me. Smile

I do my cloths on 90 once a week with powder and mostly otherwise wash at 39, or 40 if it's really stained or am using bio. If you don't use softener you also get a lot less build-up.

We used to have hard water so I'd run a hot maintenance wash around once a month with the cleaning powder in, but you'd still need to do that even if were washing hotter, as that doesn't sort out limescale.

Summersun2020 · 23/02/2021 13:15

@NewScone

I thought it had to be 40 for bed linen. Does non bio kill all the bacteria?
Unless you’re shutting the bed with C Diff I wouldn’t worry about killing your own harmless bacteria on your bedding.

Op I always wash at 30 I really don’t see the problem.

Velvian · 23/02/2021 13:25

I wash all bedding and towels at 60. I don't get this trend for washing at 30, just don't wash it if it's not dirty. Sweaty clothes still smell sweaty even at 40.

Catsick36 · 23/02/2021 13:28

Get a spare set and take the pressure of you both

doublehalo · 23/02/2021 13:31

60 minimum for bedding and towels. How do people not know this?

LalalalalalaLand123 · 23/02/2021 13:37

White bedding - therein lies your problem - a total nightmare.
Glad to see you're getting another set of bedding - maybe get 2 extras, very useful if anyone ever becomes unwell.
As many PP have said, we wash everything on 30 and everything always comes out fine.

rachelvbwho · 23/02/2021 13:39

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Yanbu. Why do most women know these simple things but so many men don't?

My dh simply forgets this sort of information. He isn't lazy or a housework shirker at all, but he forgets things like this and simple recipes. It's not that he wants to get out of doing them, it's like it's the sort of information that doesn't compute with him.

Ooo I am clearly a terrible woman... I wash everything at 30 Blush
SealHouse · 23/02/2021 13:41

I wash bed linen at 60, but the thing I found that made the biggest difference to my sheets was switching from gel/liquid washing detergent to washing powder, and also ditching the softener. I also add a small scoop of soda crystals. Sheets feel cleaner, crisper etc.

VinylDetective · 23/02/2021 13:42

@WonkyCactus

I also wash everything at 30 degrees. It's fine. Maybe your DH is wondering why you don't know this?!
This.

Just owning one set of bed linen is unreasonable.

Forgot to say, this is despite only changing them once every three weeks, although pillow cases are changed every few days

No, I wash everything at 40 and have never had mouldy smelly innards. I do make sure I clean any residual water out of the rubber drum seal and also leave the door open to air for a little while which I think helps. May also help that I am in a soft water area.

LadyDanburysCane · 23/02/2021 13:46

Linen and towels get a hot wash. Underwear (not bras) and exercise gear 40 degrees. Most other things 30 degrees. 40 degree and over I use powder, 30 degree I use liquid. I do a maintenance run at 90 degrees with vinegar and soda crystals fortnightly.

IF DH washed the linen at a lower temperature (which I doubt he’d do, he is very good at laundry) I wouldn’t re wash it.

CecilyP · 23/02/2021 13:50

Me and my girlfriend have had a conversation about this. I think the detergent kills the germs, she thinks they need a hotter wash.

You are right; the detergent does kill the germs. Interestingly, I saw a TV programme on this at the beginning of the Corona virus outbreak where they tested germy material washed at different temperatures, starting at 30 - can't remember how high they went up to. The water temperature didn't make a blind bit of difference, but I remember the non-biological washing powder killed more germs than the biological variety.

CecilyP · 23/02/2021 13:52

Not know what? That you waste money heating water to 60 when it isn't neceessary?

QueenCoconut · 23/02/2021 13:52

We always use 60 degree wash for all bed linen , towels and a seperate 60 wash for underwear.

Otherwise it’s just a lukewarm bacteria soup .

MrsVogon · 23/02/2021 13:52

🤮 my ex used to have a sweaty head. It ruined pillow cases so I used to buy cheaper pillowcases for him and change them a few times a week. Thankful I don't have to do that now!

BasinHaircut · 23/02/2021 13:54

Just for the people in the cheap seats who clearly haven’t read my responses - it’s not because I’m trying to kill bacteria it’s the sweaty man head stains.

I am listening to the recommendations of napisan - I’m going to get some of that too I think. I do already use soda crystals in my wash.

I really didn’t mean to start a washing thread Grin, it was more about DH not knowing - but he should (and I think does) know - that that’s how we wash the sweaty man head off our pillowcases.

I’m not putting signs about washing temps up as a PP suggested so that he doesn’t have to keep such silly women’s nonsense in his own head - he should be able to retain this information just as well as I am! Shock

I will get around to buying a second set of bedding but I’m probably not going to buy a primark set, I’ll buy another naice set because for the first time ever in my 38 years I finally have a lovely grown up bedroom and I think I deserve some lovely bedding that makes me feel like I’m in a hotel.

@RandomLondoner

Why does this woman I know of not realise that only having one set of bedding is ridiculously inefficient and inconvenient?

For bedding, I think one set is the most efficient and convenient quantity. I've always found it easy to wash and dry within one period of waking hours. A second set would offer no benefit and would cost cupboard space.

I live in a studio and have multiple bedding sets. Some people on MN love to be martyrs
