To serve boiled potatoes

Much stroppiness and comments and moaning because when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied.. Surely everyone eats boiled potatoes for dinner in UK sometimes aren't they an English staple part of our traditional diet for context I didn't serve just boiled spuds I served with peas carrots and salmon encroute (shop bought but nice) are they just spoilt? We had pasta yesterday beautiful tapas day before Indian night before fresh fish etc etc it's not like they have to eat it every day I think they are too used to lovely exotic food and are just being ungrateful shits. Or are boiled potatoes actually that bad?

OP posts:
RavingAnnie · 23/02/2021 01:30

I love all potatoes except boiled. Disgusting. YABU.

eaglejulesk · 23/02/2021 01:41

All these people saying boiled potatoes are boring - I think there is nothing, and I mean nothing, more boring than white rice. Yuk!

grassisjeweled · 23/02/2021 01:42

They're alright fried

FolkyFoxFace · 23/02/2021 01:48

Boiled new potatoes with butter, yes. Big normal peeled spuds boiled - nope.

I do like boiled normal spuds but they have to keep their skins on and have something extra added to them (garlic, butter, chilli, spices...just something). And they can't be soggy.

tobee · 23/02/2021 01:50

They can get waterlogged. And they can look a bit dull but if they do you can always add mayonnaise, herbs and black pepper and pretend you meant to make hot potato salad all along.

They're very handy if you can't be arsed to peel them.

The strong reactions on here underline my thoughts that food enjoyment is more about texture than taste.

tobee · 23/02/2021 01:51

X post!

FortunesFave · 23/02/2021 02:19

The question is this...when asked would she be serving "Boiled or nice" potatoes, she said nice...and then served BOILED so why did she lie!!

Grin

AND then have the audacity to say "Apparently I lied"

You did lie you boiled potato witch!.

BiscuitSewingTin · 23/02/2021 02:20

My parents’ cooking was stuck in the 70s so I had them plain almost every day growing up. Got sick to the back teeth of them before I even moved out. Haven’t made them once as an adult. Only thing worse is a limp microwaved “baked” potato.

Aprilx · 23/02/2021 02:23

I last ate boiled potatoes in the 70s. Nobody eats them these days OP.

muppette · 23/02/2021 02:32

I'm yes I think not nice of the kids to say that. Supper was salmon en croute. Happened to be with potatoes.

I get those mini baby pots and boil or steam just until done and mine love them. Squash them a bit and put a bit of sea salt on.

Elvesaremagic · 23/02/2021 05:22

A lot of seem to have eaten boiled potatoes as kids but wouldn’t serve them now, choosing mash / new pots with butter / dauphinois etc. Is this why we the nation has put on weight over the years?

Oblomov21 · 23/02/2021 05:26

Can't believe this thread! The scorn for the normal boiled potato. Wierd.

namechangefail2020 · 23/02/2021 05:31

I do them and I know Im not a boring cook. Sometimes you just want good old British food. I just put butter on for my husband who doesn't have to watch what he eats and the kids

CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 23/02/2021 05:32

Boiled baby potatoes (I cut mine in half so they are really tender), seasoned with salt and pepper and butter after draining, lid on pot and shake for 30 seconds to really fluff them. So tasty! I sometimes add a small dod of philadelphia too, so good.

maddiemookins16mum · 23/02/2021 05:49

We never have plain boiled spuds, mainly because I either overcook them, hence they become mash, undercook them hence they get chucked in a roasting tin with dripping. I only ever serve boiled, scraped new potatoes with half a pack of butter.

Mendingfences · 23/02/2021 05:54

We eat lots of plain boiled potatoes, but we're in scandinavia....

BigPaperBag · 23/02/2021 05:56

I used to dread it when my mum said the words ‘boiled potatoes’ 🤮🤮 It’s a thumbs down from me @Haveyouallgonequitemad

PoppenhuisStories · 23/02/2021 06:06

We had this exact conversation in our house recently when DH made them. He thinks they’re fine, the children actually ate them without complaint but I was horrified!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 23/02/2021 06:29

Bag of baby ready washed new pots. Bung them straight in a roasting tin in their jackets and roast for 40 mins. Nothing easier

CasperGutman · 23/02/2021 06:40

I found the OP quite hard to follow, but it seems like you told "them" they were having "nice potatoes" then served plain boiled potatoes.

It sounds like the problem was expectation management. Plain boiled potatoes are ... adequate, basic potatoes. "Nice" potatoes would be crispy roast potatoes, unctuous buttery mash, dauphinoise etc....

MillyMinamino · 23/02/2021 06:43

Sorry I agree with your children, there are loads and loads of ways to make potatoes 'nice' but just boiling ordinary potatoes is not one of them.

Marmite27 · 23/02/2021 06:46

@SnarkyBag

Boiled new potatoes? Fine. Boiled normal potatoes? Grim I remember boiled potatoes as a child, waxy, stodge I’m afraid
I’m completely of this opinion.
DearTeddyRobinson · 23/02/2021 07:00

Yanbu OP. First of all as I say to my kids, this isn't a bloody restaurant! If I'm cooking you say thank you and eat it or starve.
Secondly spuds of any description are ace when covered in butter with a little salt & pepper, how hard would it be for your ungrateful kids to do that?
Humph. I'm cross on your behalf!!

Velvian · 23/02/2021 07:05

I haven't had boiled potatoes for at least years. So many things you can do with a potato. Why would you boil it? YABU. I agree with PP, you lied to them. Grin

LadyPenelope68 · 23/02/2021 07:07

They are disgusting, it’s the absolute worst way to serve them. Gorgeous salmon en croute and lovely veg served with boiled potatoes, yuck, sorry.
