To serve boiled potatoes

Much stroppiness and comments and moaning because when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied.. Surely everyone eats boiled potatoes for dinner in UK sometimes aren't they an English staple part of our traditional diet for context I didn't serve just boiled spuds I served with peas carrots and salmon encroute (shop bought but nice) are they just spoilt? We had pasta yesterday beautiful tapas day before Indian night before fresh fish etc etc it's not like they have to eat it every day I think they are too used to lovely exotic food and are just being ungrateful shits. Or are boiled potatoes actually that bad?

This thread is weird. Boiled potatoes are the same as mashed potatoes just that each individual has to mash their own.

ParkheadParadise · 23/02/2021 00:33

We have boiled potatoes with steak pie, roast beef and mince.
I prefer boiled potatoes to mashed potatoes.

tobee · 23/02/2021 00:34
@MasterBeth how so? And don't be so rude!

It might have taken a bit of effort to mash them but they could have been mashed if one so wished. They were fucking delicious. Not fucked up at all.
They sound like very sophisticated crushed potatoes to me!

You can crush a boiled potato but you shouldn’t be able to smoothly mash it - you need to take a bit further to get good mash. Your poor children with their wallpaper paste potatoes!

ChronicallyCurious · 23/02/2021 00:37

Boiled potatoes are rank. My Mum used to serve them all the time when I was younger and they are literally the most boring food so I make sure we never have them

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 23/02/2021 00:38

Crush/mash whatever. If my "poor" children (who have survived 16 and 14 years of my cooking) didn't want their potatoes boiled they were welcome to do something with their fork.

@tobee they were lovely. But no crushing actually happened. Clearly my dc are as lazy as me Grin

EL8888 · 23/02/2021 00:40

I’m getting flashbacks to my ex MIL’s cooking Shock. Boiled potatoes are a no from me. Boiled new potatoes l can just about tolerate

MasterBeth · 23/02/2021 00:41

Survival food is a very good definition for a boiled potato. I suppose they would taste worse if you ate them raw, but not by much.

Bluesername · 23/02/2021 00:42

I love boiled potatoes. They are comfort food, totally un-pretentious, and I would definitely eat more chocolate if it wasn't for potatoes.

xMarksTheSpotlight · 23/02/2021 00:44

Wow. Thought it was just me. A childhood of boring boiled potatoes, now I only do it if they are new potatoes.

Otherwise peeling and boiling is a middle step en route to roasties or mash.

WorraLiberty · 23/02/2021 00:44

@Glitteryone

I’m irish and I grew up eating boiled potatoes with dinner every night.

My parents are old school and they still have meat, veg & boiled potatoes every day! Mum might have a chinese takeaway once a week but Dad doesn’t think it’s a real dinner unless it includes boiled potatoes!

OMG I SWEAR we must be related, except my Mum would never have been as adventurous as to order a Chinese takeaway! Grin

Sorry OP but boiled potatoes really don't do it for me.

happymummy12345 · 23/02/2021 00:45

I love boiled potatoes. With butter. I want some now

SoulofanAggron · 23/02/2021 00:48

You can often get the new 'herby potatoes' reduced. So they're ok value.

Catterpillar · 23/02/2021 00:48

ha, same here, boiled potatoes every day for 18 years.

Sweettea1 · 23/02/2021 00:49

Am not a fan but my dd likes them she gets them when am doing mash as she prefers them. Your kids are fed thats the main thing.

typicalvalues · 23/02/2021 00:50

Dauphinoise potatoes are gorgeous, but I try to go the healthy route. They are actually very nutritious and as I mentioned earlier, if you're having trouble with bowel movements, they tend to stabilise things.

I believe they also contain a lot of vitamin C.

I would eat potatoes with every meal if I could. In any form. I'm too lazy though.

And for Christmas dinner, yes, we have roast potatoes, mash and potato croquettes! Beat that!

MrMeSeeks · 23/02/2021 00:51

Haven't eaten this since school, vile things.
Nasty and boring

Giggorata · 23/02/2021 00:57

I only ever boil potatoes to do something more interesting with them.
Just bland boiled potatoes on your plate, like we children of the 50s and 60s endured, not even interesting enough to be horrible... no.

Redruby2020 · 23/02/2021 00:58

@Haveyouallgonequitemad Hi I have to say my DS doesn't approve of just boiled either gave them back to me, literally 🤣

Redruby2020 · 23/02/2021 00:59

@KilljoysDutch

It depends were they lovely baby potatoes boiled in their skins with some butter or horrible standard potatoes boiled with no skin? Or worse cooked like my MIL - peeled new potatoes boiled to death with mint?
🤣🤣 The boiled to death but sounds like me!
FrustratedTeddyLamp · 23/02/2021 01:01

Smile Now all I can think about is Findus crispy pancakes (not crispy just sloppy vomit covered in bright orange coating) and manky boiled spuds Smile I made them the other day and was shocked its actually pancakes!

quince2figs · 23/02/2021 01:09

I love boiled potatoes, with butter and sea salt. New potatoes in skins are my favourite, but my understanding was that they are only in season late Spring to late Autumn? Hence the name “new”... aware may be showing my age and hopelessly wrong here!
I can remember eagerly awaited arrival of new pots (esp Jersey Royals) early Summer as a child.
I know we can get new pots all year round now, but I don’t buy in winter - they tend mostly to be mealy and sweet-tasting, due to having been in storage.
Floury, maincrop potatoes have a longer season and store much more successfully - so good to eat all year. They are better with things like casseroles or slow-cooked meat, I think.

Shrivelled · 23/02/2021 01:10

My MIL serves boiled potatoes that sit on the plate in a puddle of starchy water because she doesn’t drain them before serving. So odd and so gross. I can’t even look at a boiled potato any more. Roasted all the way.

tobee · 23/02/2021 01:11

@WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo lol!

Ohdofuckofdear · 23/02/2021 01:26

I love them but they have to be new potatoes covered in butter and fresh mint.
