Is this too much? We're a family of 5, no school hol requirements.

It seems a lot when there's no 'going abroad' involved - we did go somewhere £200 cheaper last year but there was no wifi which rather put a downer on things!

I think it’s pretty average really. Everyone is booking U.K. holidays as going abroad is so uncertain. We are paying £5k for 2 weeks in a (albeit lovely) cottage in st Ives in July - and I struggled to find that! I’ve also just booked a caravan in the lakes for 3 nights at Easter for £400.

Imaystillbedrunk · 22/02/2021 21:07

£140ish per night seems about right for a family of 5, but you can only say of its reasonable for you or not. But all does depend on where you are going, size of cottage and amenities

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/02/2021 21:11

Well bearing in mind you'd pay 100 A night per room in a hotel, seems ok to me. I paid for 2 bed cottage in Yorkshire last but one week of summer school hols, nearly 1000 And Tuesday to Monday(bizarrely).

Chimoia · 22/02/2021 21:11

Depends on the area and property but I would expect to pay £700+ for most in the summer holidays, or £1000 for a static in a nice area, so if its a nice one then it's about right.

Jellykat · 22/02/2021 21:12

Pretty normal, the house i clean is more then that per week, and its booked up solidly every year (does sleep 8 though)

QueenOfLabradors · 22/02/2021 21:16

I was scrolling around earlier for summer half term, and found a possible in Devon, enough bedrooms (three) and accepted dogs... it was a bit under-equipped in several other ways though. Nevertheless I wanted to find out how much, and only when I got to the booking page that I discovered they wanted £3771 for the week!!! WTAF!

Smallpaw · 22/02/2021 21:17

Gosh £5k for 2 weeks! That makes me feel a bit better. We can afford it but I'm naturally frugal and my comfort point is about £700-800 usually. I think I'm still also remembering caravan hols from 10 years ago when I managed to get cheap last minute weeks for £300-400!

The same property is available in July but for a fair bit more (£1400) and that just felt too much. Hence looking at September instead...

I suppose whether it's too much would depend on where you're going?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/02/2021 21:21

Depends on size and quality
We have paid same but its a top end one on the site and biggest as we wanted lots of room as sharing with another couple ( if allowed by then )

Loveacheekysausage · 22/02/2021 21:21

We have paid just under £1500 for a week in a three bed cabin in a forest. We should have been there this half term, but has been pushed to May half term instead. Cost a touch more and does seem expensive with it being UK based. However, I do think we do need to move away from that perspective of holidays at home should be cheap/cheaper than abroad. Not sure if it’s because we equate a holiday with guaranteed sun, sea and sand? Anyway I’m really looking forward to it - anything for a change of walls!

radioband · 22/02/2021 21:21

We’ve booked a cottage first week of September when schools are back for £550 family of four in Cornwall.

Are you me? I'm off to St Ives (1 week not 2) but have also got a 3 night stay in the Lake District!
Crakeandoryx · 22/02/2021 21:23

It's standard for a house in UK during peak season.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 22/02/2021 21:27

@Loopyloututu2 I didn’t think we could book anything until 12th April at the earliest or have I got that wrong?

Depends what level of comfort you are after. Standards will vary greatly. We have done many uk cottage holidays and I always think that if I'm on holiday it should be a better standard than my own house to make it feel worth it.

AuntieMarys · 22/02/2021 21:29

I've paid nearly £900 for a 4 bedroomed, 4 bathrooms property for a week in Wales. There's just the 2 of us 😀 but I wanted this particular house. Can't wait.

CattyCactus · 22/02/2021 21:31

Depends where?
And how many beds? Style? Seaside, sea view or countryside?
Sounds ok to me though.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 22/02/2021 21:31

weve booked a cottage in the highlands for first week of september and thats £800 for 2 of us so for 5 people isnt too bad a price

Augustwhatacrapname · 22/02/2021 21:32

Saying we shouldn't think of them as cheaper than overseas you are paying for a flight too obvs.

SimonJT · 22/02/2021 21:38

Its fairly standard during peak season, the cottage we have booked for August is a little more, but it does have a swimming pool.

Scarby9 · 22/02/2021 21:40

£200 per person for 7 nights seems to me to be the way to think of it.

Loopyloututu2 · 22/02/2021 21:41

BigSandyBalls2015
They’ve said self catering from 12th - I’ve booked 3 nights from 16th so should be ok (sorry I meant Easter holidays not Easter weekend)

  • no idea whether anything will be open but they said museums zoos etc will be from 12th so I’m hoping that means other attractions will be too? If not I guess we’ll be doing some hill-walking Grin
Heyahun · 22/02/2021 21:43

God no I wouldn’t - I’d rather keep the money and do something better next year

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/02/2021 21:45

I am paying (well, have reserved and fingers crossed) £600 for a two bed small apartment in N. Wales in August and tbh I was surprised it wasnt more!

So a whole cottage for £1000 would be about right.

That said, the price of holiday accomodation in the UK is why we started doing Eurocamp, we could have a longer holiday with better weather and the same (and sometimes nicer) accomodation for the same price or very little more as a week in Devon (say).
