To spend almost 1k on a UK holiday cottage in September?

Is this too much? We're a family of 5, no school hol requirements.

It seems a lot when there's no 'going abroad' involved - we did go somewhere £200 cheaper last year but there was no wifi which rather put a downer on things!

I should perhaps disclose that last year we spent £1400 on a cottage for 3 people in August.

I had originally booked for 6 adults, two with special requirements for downstairs accommodation etc, we felt it was pricey but doable as the only holiday in two years.

Then our parents couldn't travel that far and I was about to cancel when I got talking to two friends and we decided to go instead. Three double bedrooms, three bath/ shower rooms and a big enough living area and garden to socially distance in. Worth every single penny last summer.

Every single penny.

CherryRoulade · 22/02/2021 21:46

Ours is over £2, 000 for September.

ItsLoisSangersFault · 22/02/2021 21:49

We would pay between £800 and £1200 for a week during school holidays in the UK. Family of 4.

I'm quite picky and try to find nice places in good locations however I don't think we're ever anywhere near the top end of the UK market.

Crunchymum · 22/02/2021 21:49

We've managed to book a cottage for half term week for £700. Seaside town, 10 minute walk from beach.

5 of us. Think we got a good deal.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 22/02/2021 21:52

We usually pay just short of £1k for a week in a holiday cottage most years for two of us in early October, so I think you’ve got a bargain for 5 of you in September.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 22/02/2021 21:53

Seriously we have booked a 5 bed dog friendly house in the North (on a beach) for over £3000 in September. To be fair it is gorgeous but still it is bloody madness.
Only booked because of all the cancelled things and because it is all shit

Bubbinsmakesthree · 22/02/2021 22:00

I am slightly addicted to browsing Airbnb and £120pn seems to be about the minimum price for a semi-decent 2 bed cottage in peak or shoulder season, easily rising to £150pn (and plenty for much much more!).

Symbion · 22/02/2021 22:05

Prices are going to be crazy this year. Later on I think you'll be glad you've got something booked in.

How is everyone booking Easter break holidays when

hotels and campsites are not re-opening until 12th April ?

Gov.uk

BrilliantBetty · 22/02/2021 22:17

I just can't bear to spend that amount on a UK holiday. We've done them and it's never very much fun.

I regret the money spent every time and wish we'd saved it and used it on something nice abroad. A 'proper' holiday.

Sadly the only other family we seem to be able to holiday with enjoy UK (only). And my DC love spending time with theirs.

ktp100 · 22/02/2021 22:29

That's a midweek break in a 3 bed house at center parcs outside of peak weeks.

UK holidays can be more expensive than people realise.

Our school Easter break is from 1st-20th April so we’re going at the end.

Cocopogo · 22/02/2021 22:38

I’ve paid 2k for a week in august for 3 bedrooms. So I’d say it was about right

CeeceeBloomingdale · 22/02/2021 22:41

I think it's a lot. I always pay much less and am amazed at how much people here say they spend. I stay in rather nice places too, not the hovels I suspect I'm about to be accused of. Perhaps it's area dependent, I never holiday in the south, more often than not we go to Scotland.

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 22/02/2021 22:44

Sounds like I’m not the only one who has spent the evening browsing AirBnB! Our Easter school holidays run until the 19th so I’ll be booking a few days w/c 12th too.

MegBusset · 22/02/2021 22:45

Really depends on area, generally the further north the cheaper. We have stayed in cottages in Northumberland / Yorkshire / Cumbria for £600/week that would have been at least double in Devon or Cornwall.

This year we are splashing out and getting a really swish cottage (three beds) in the Lakes for £1.5k/week, would consider it too rich in normal times.

Gerberageri · 22/02/2021 22:48

How many rooms? We have a 3 bed cottage for £600 in August. We stayed last year and it's a lovely place. Most of the time when we pay more we feel ripped off as not any better than a cheaper one. The only time I'd pay more is if it had something fancy like a pool or hot tub.

Ellieboolou33 · 22/02/2021 22:53

I spent just over 1k on a caravan holiday in Norfolk for this July, I was quite shocked but it seems like a nice place and entertainment passes included, good facilities etc.

Probably could have got it cheaper but I've saved so much by not going anywhere for half the year I didn't mind spending a bit extra.

Serin · 22/02/2021 22:59

We have just looked into booking a nice (but not spectacular) cottage in Snowdonia for the last week in August into Sept. It is £2800, I cant justify it and will carry on looking. I mean I could do a week in Italy for that.

Smallpaw · 22/02/2021 22:59

My limit for driving is about 4 hours, and we're in the south so that rules out Scotland or anywhere far north.

Cottage is a large 3 bed, looks to be furnished to a nice standard, has lovely outside space. I think I've talked myself into it!

shinynewapple21 · 22/02/2021 23:27

I think we paid similar last September.

Cam2020 · 23/02/2021 09:10

UK holidays are always expensive if you're going somewhere beautiful - and there are beautiful places in the UK. Everyone has their preferences and ideas what constitutes a 'holiday', but I don't like this idea that somewhere abroad is 'better'. Angry

LetMeStraightenMyCrownFirst · 23/02/2021 09:19

Our two-bed luxury cottage is £750 per week in high season. So maybe a thousand is a little much if you are going for a three bedder but not horribly so.

Fourandtwentymilliondoors · 23/02/2021 09:31

Do it! We’ve booked a luxury cottage for £1500 for a week in September and it’s just the two of us and the dog 😄

Smallpaw · 23/02/2021 09:34

Now I am dithering between the almost 1k in September, and 1400 in July (or 1200 in June).

Will the weather be better later in the year? We went away last year in Sept and had beautiful weather but we were about as far South as you can get, not so much with this place.
