Being hounded by friend to buy Tropic skincare products

Friend had a baby and is now harassing everyone she knows to buy these ‘amazing’ products. It’s so obvious it’s a MLM thing.

Has anyone used these products? Are they any good?

I feel a little bit sorry for her because it isn’t the first MLM thing she’s tried to flog to everyone she knows.

"Being hounded by temporarilly ex friend friend to buy Tropic skincare products"

The only solution

Cherrysoup · 22/02/2021 19:52

Lord, don’t get dragged in! Just block the adverts/snooze her.

Lockheart · 22/02/2021 19:52

Yes it is a MLM / pyramid scheme. Whether they're any good or not is of no relevance if you don't want them.

If you want to keep the friendship, just tell her no and ask her not to contact you about any of the products in future.

TheRebelle · 22/02/2021 19:52

I feel for you, I had a friend trying to sell me Tropic stuff too, I ended up pulling back from the friendship. MLMs are evil for preying on new mums.

Soontobe60 · 22/02/2021 19:54

My friend sells it. It’s very expensive! I’ve never bought any of it, and she no longer tries to sell it to me.
I know a few people who do MLM things and they are constantly posting on FB but I never buy anything off them apart from once when I bought some Body Shop stuff a couple of years ago and realised it was more expensive, in cheaper packaging and smaller sized than from the actual shop!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 19:55

I don't think Tropic is an MLM but their "ambassadors" are massive pests. I fell out with a fellow school mum who wouldn't leave me alone, she really took offence that I didn't want a daily message asking me to spend £42 on eye cream.

I'll confess I do buy the deodorant and the cleanser, toner moisturiser set and face masks. They're amazing and reasonably priced for what they are. However the serums are over £40!!! I'll stick to my trusted Clinique thanks

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 19:55

And I buy off a friend who bungs me discounts and doesn't pester me

CoffeeBeansGalore · 22/02/2021 19:56

My daughter likes some of the products but I think they are stupidly expensive for what they are. My skin reacts badly to some very commonly used ingredients so "unfortunately" cannot use them. My get out clause to anything like this. But if you are interested their website gives prices & ingredients.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/02/2021 19:56

It is MLM

BlackCatsRule88 · 22/02/2021 19:56

If you don’t want to get in to what an MLM shitshow Tropic is, could you say you’ve tried it in the past and it didnt work for your skin type?

Soulstirring · 22/02/2021 19:56

My friend does tropic alongside her beauty business and loves it. The products are quite good to be honest but I buy them very infrequently. I feel guilty at not buying them more often though

Comefromaway · 22/02/2021 19:57

I bought some stuff at a Christmas fayre a year ago

The shampoo is nice and it doesn’t irritate my scalp as most shampoos do. However it doesn’t clean my hair as well as the Noughtie shampoo I buy from Superdrug.

I bought dd some skincare but she reacted to it.

Estara · 22/02/2021 19:59

I use it and I love it. I don't sell it and avoid the hundreds of people who have set up as ambassadors as it seems everyone has jumped on that band wagon. But if they have the time to sell it to earn a bit of commission then leave them to it. Just decline the invitations to join their page.

Justmuddlingalong · 22/02/2021 19:59

If you would buy it, buy it from her. If you wouldn't, tell her you'll stick to your preferred brands of skincare. Wish her well but say if the products are so fabulous, you're sure they'll sell themselves. 😉

Icantrememebrtheartist · 22/02/2021 20:00

Thanks everyone. They are ridiculously expensive.

I hate these kind of things, I find them really awkward.

OP posts:
Justmuddlingalong · 22/02/2021 20:02

That feeling of awkwardness is all part of the sales gimmick.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 20:02

I assumed it wasn't - this usually goes pink when it is

2021namechanger · 22/02/2021 20:03

Please don’t find it awkward. MLMs are built on that awkwardness.

I run a business - and not once have I asked a friend to use my services (in fact I will generally direct them elsewhere to save any hassle).

MLM is evil.

Iamthewombat · 22/02/2021 20:04

Is it one of those where the people flogging it are keen to assure you that the stuff is “as good as Estée Lauder or Chanel” but can’t tell you why it isn’t sold in shops if that’s the case?

I did get a sort of answer once: apparently the stuff is so good that if they had to pay a cut to Boots or department stores, the snake oil would be twice the price to me, the lucky consumer. I declined.

CodenameVillanelle · 22/02/2021 20:06

Tropic is 100% a MLM and the products are expensive because there are dozens of people in the up line who take a cut.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 20:07

I once borrowed a Tropic make up basket from my friend and I swear it's estee Lauder price tags and Primark quality. Awful, I was orange

LolaSmiles · 22/02/2021 20:10

MLMs are built on friends and family wanting to be polite or feeling awkward about refusing. The upline bots will also be telling their down line bots that any friends/family who express concerns are jealous of the totes amazeballs opportunity, don't have what it takes to be a boss babe, trying to bring you down hun.

If you don't want to get into the MLM drama then it's easier to politely decline and repeat as needed.

SkittlesRainbow · 22/02/2021 20:10

If you support her you either give false hppe or need to keep regular custom each month. Its kinder to say a flat no as she will give up sooner and regain her life. Supporting MLM is the worst thing anyone can do, it just perpetuates this toxic and damaging business model where the ambassadors are the victim.

mcclucky · 22/02/2021 20:12

I don't understand MLM schemes now everyone has the internet and can just, you know, buy stuff.

It was different when I was a wee bairn and people had dial-up internet and/or bought things by mail order!

I mean, just what is the point of buying something from a friend/acquaintance and waiting for them to deliver when you can go online?

Glitterandmud · 22/02/2021 20:12

I'll admit I do like them, I went to a party to get to know some local mums, bought the starter set to be polite and been hooked since. I do feel a massive hypocrite as I don't like MLMs, but I do like my skin these days.
