That GA law has me so upset that my mind won't even allow me to think about it.

I'm sure it'll be challenged all the way to SCOTUS, and hopefully in a hurry (before next year's midterms). And then we shall truly see what (and just who) that court is made up of. That law is so unconstitutional it boggles the mind.

Yes Across indeed. I just can't get my head round it. It just seems so alien to me in a democracy.

A funny story to lighten the mood...
I have finally got an Ocado delivery (Across... it's a sort of grocery supplier). I've been trying for ages to get a slot, today was my first one. This was most exciting as nothing else is going on Chez Roussette!

Anyway... the driver was lovely... I recognised an American accent. And in no time at all I'd established he was an anti-Doofus big time! He comes from Portland, Maine, had nothing complimentary to say about Susan Collins, and his children and GC live in St. Augustine, Florida and ditto De Santis.
This was all in the space of 5 minutes and quite brightened my day talking to another human that isnt my DH !

Might have to do Ocado again to carry on the conversation!

(sorry for derail)

www.politico.com/news/2021/03/25/voting-rights-filibuster-477905

Black civil rights leaders, voting rights advocates and elected officials are ramping up their lobbying of Senate Democrats to nix the filibuster, arguing that they can keep the rule in place or pass voting rights legislation, but not both.

In a half-dozen interviews, top officials framed the choice as existential for a party that depends on Black and brown voters — and they are planning pressure campaigns privately and publicly to make that clear.

LOL. I hear you. It's thrilling to find people you can talk to during these times!!!

We had a few trees on our property with limbs that needed trimming badly and were thrilled to find the tree surgeon was a Dem and a rabid Doofus-hater. We had a wonderful half hour abusing Doofus (who was still Scrotus at the time) and talking (with masks and SD of course) about the then up-coming election. We actually texted each other 'congratulations' when the election was 'called' for Biden!

That's a brilliant story! Love it!

I will be so disappointed if I order online again and it isn't him 😂

Anniegetyourgun · 26/03/2021 18:58

I'm wondering whether the way round the indescribably petty prohibition on giving people refreshments in the voting queue would be to sell it to them, at a substantial discount of course.

lionheart · 26/03/2021 20:01

Civil disobedience is a fine thing when push comes to shove.

InMySpareTime · 26/03/2021 20:08

Could they have a pre-queue for polling stations to get round that ludicrous law?
Only about 10 people are in the actual queue, all the others are waiting to join the queue and are free to receive food and drinks. Leave a small gap between the two lines.
Or mark the line with stacks of water crates at intervals, on the understanding that the water crate "fence" might end up a lot lighter by the end of the day...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/03/2021 20:10

I can't help remembering the recent and very notable filibuster, even so:

Request him as your delivery driver. Stand back and watch the neighbourhood gossipmongers have a field day!

The President says:

"This is Jim Crow in the 21st Century. It must end. We have a moral and constitutional obligation to act."

Good ideas here! I'll tell some of my old friends in Georgia.

Incidentally, at a grocery store once near Atlanta, visiting those friends, I was shocked to see bags of sugar for sale with a version of the confederate flag on the label, as 'decoration'. We bought a different one!

The Republicans are truly despicable. It makes me so angry. Angry

DuncinToffee · 26/03/2021 22:49

@Roussette

Thank you so much for that Jai. I have been reading about this and to say I'm shocked is an understatement.

The picture of the signing was bad enough. White men in front of a picture of a slavery plantation.

I hadn't seen the picture but have now

edition.cnn.com/2021/03/26/politics/georgia-voting-law-two-photos/index.html

Hope this will be the case
Kemp and his fellow Republicans who posed for the signing portrait last night have said the new law is needed to boost confidence in "secure, accessible, and fair" elections.
But they may soon discover that photo will haunt them for years to come.
The juxtaposition between that image and the one of Cannon's arrest shows maybe better than a thousand op-eds about "voter integrity" what the new Georgia law is all about

Good old Fox. Putting it into context....

www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/sitting-their-hands-biden-transition-officials-say-trump-officials-delayed-n1261934

In early December, the Biden transition team and career government officials began sounding an alarm on the need to increase shelter space for the large number of migrant children expected to soon be crossing the border, but the Trump administration didn't take action until just days before the inauguration, according to two Biden transition officials and a U.S. official with knowledge of the discussions.

"They were sitting on their hands," said one of the transition officials, who does not currently work for the Biden administration and spoke on the condition of anonymity. "It was incredibly frustrating."

The Biden transition team made its concerns about the lack of shelter space known to Trump officials both at the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Homeland Security, laying out the need to open an influx shelter in Carrizo Springs, Texas, and to issue what's known as a "request for assistance" that would start the process of surveying new sites for expanded shelters, according to the transition officials.

Thom Tillis from Sagaaaaas' screenshot was one of 18 gop senators visiting the Mexican border, Cruz and Graham were also part of that group. They arrived in an armed boat

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) at the U.S.-Mexico border: "Why are 18 senators here? Because it's the biggest issue facing the country in many ways right now."

Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) gets a little nostalgic when talking about how Mexican meth has overtaken homemade Montana meth.

DuncinToffee · 27/03/2021 11:58

A Democrat party also visited the border

amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/03/26/politics/congress-texas-migrants-unaccompanied-minors-border-immigration

CNN) Two separate groups of lawmakers traveled to Texas on Friday to spotlight the surge of unaccompanied minors crossing the US-Mexico border in recent weeks — with the lawmakers blaming different administrations for why the crisis is happening in the first place.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 27/03/2021 12:27

I am unsure how it is possible for Biden to do as he has promised and prevent children from being separated from their parents at the border if it is being done by people-traffickers in Mexico who then hand the children to US border officials and say "Your problem."

Finding their parents in Mexico might not be all that easy for him.

That may have been a rash promise for him to make.

Unfortunately in order to watch that I have to have a TV licence, which since I do not have a TV I do not have.
