I think it's a shame that Neanderthal (which was a German coinage) has recently gained a th in its pronunciation, when the Germans dropped the h from the spelling a hundred years or more ago. A vale in German is pronounced taal not thaal.
One thing you discover very quickly when you are a foreigner* is that your views on writing and pronunciation in your own language are all very well, but not always correct. So if the English are pronouncing it "th" then it's the Germans that are wrong. It's just how the world is.
How many times do you think I've been told I'm saying Tag-lee-a-telly wrong ? And don't get me started on expresso.
*Remember: you can never be a foreigner if you are British or American. It's just not possible.
(I wonder if there's an h. Cheddars to be found ? Or even better h. Chocolatedigestivitis - found face down .... )
