Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

A washing machine is essential for me - we use cloth nappies and I can’t just not wash them.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/02/2021 13:20

Dishwasher seems to be the norm - I guess people don’t want to be washing up on their hols! Also I think it’s usual to bring enough clothes for the week.

With children, it would be pretty useful to have a washing machine as well, but I think it’s an “as well” not “instead of”.

Going by everywhere we’ve stayed - including resorts like Forest Holidays, Bluestone etc (not been to Center Parcs but imagine it’s similar) - they must have done their research before going for dishwasher.

AnnaSW1 · 22/02/2021 13:21

Dishwasher!

I don't want to wash up on holiday.

We'd do the laundry when we get home.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/02/2021 13:25

Wouldn’t you always, always wash out sicky, muddy or weed on clothes in the sink first? Sicky or muddy stuff is really going to bugger up a washing machine!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/02/2021 13:32

Dishwasher - you'll use that every day AND I reckon you could wash undies and socks on the top rack at the same time! Blush

Lottle · 22/02/2021 13:36

Dishwasher. Dishwasher. Dishwasher!

Lockdownlumpy · 22/02/2021 13:36

My preference might depend on location.
I would generally say dishwasher because I'd bring enough clothes for a week.

However, if you are close to a beach then I might say washing machine to be able to wash sandy swimming stuff and towels.

Raindropsonrosesand · 22/02/2021 13:38

Please tell me you are joking, @twoleftsockswithholes, or else I willl never be able to use a dishwasher in a holiday let again!!

lottiegarbanzo · 22/02/2021 13:39

Yup, Centerparcs has dishwashers in every cottage, not washing machines. But most people go for 3-4 days, not a full week. There must be a launderette on site.

I want a holiday cottage to be relaxing, less work than being at home, not more. A huge % of people have dishwashers at home now, so would expect it as standard.

I'll happily wash up if we're camping but that's camping.

Raindropsonrosesand · 22/02/2021 13:39

Oh, and my answer is both - slimline dishwasher is fine if that makes it fit, or washing machine in bathroom.

IthinkIm · 22/02/2021 13:50

Dishwasher. In all my years of holidaying I've never done any washing on holiday. I wouldn't go to a holiday cottage without a dishwasher though. I've not washed the dishes by hand for a very long time.

HeronLanyon · 22/02/2021 13:51

OP - there’s only one thing for it. You’re going to have to buy a second small rental with the other appliance in and then perhaps a third with both. Smile

dontdillydallytoolong · 22/02/2021 13:57

@Smile I think you are right!

Washing machine. Usually eat out when on holiday but would make use of a washing machine thru the holiday to save doing it all getting home. Also if stuff gets full of sand on the beach/wet or muddy in bad weather etc it's handy to be able to wash it.

thinkfast · 22/02/2021 13:59

Dishwasher. If there's no washing machine we pack more clothes. Washing up is a pain

PresentingPercy · 22/02/2021 14:03

Very few holiday rentals have washing machines. Mine has one and a full size dishwasher. Its a premium property though and good size. If a property does not have one, most people hand wash. So make drying available in the garden or an airer over the bath.

I have never been to a rental without a washing machine. In this country or abroad
Kottbullar · 22/02/2021 14:04

If I had to choose one I'd choose dishwasher.

Although the reality is I'd want both. The reason I prefer SC for a holiday is that I want the same facilities I have at home or better. Otherwise I'd stay in a hotel.

Same here.

Bibidy · 22/02/2021 14:05

Dishwasher for me.

I wouldn't want to be washing clothes on holiday, that's extra work. But a dishwasher takes away some work!

Oysterbabe · 22/02/2021 14:06

I've never washed clothes on holiday once in my life.

MrsDoctorDear · 22/02/2021 14:07

only one meal's worth of crockery, is that it eats time, after every single meal. Pause to wash up, before doing the next activity. I'd much rather stick everything in a dishwasher, run and unload it once a day.

How does that once a day thing work then if you only have one meals worth of crockery?

Spidey66 · 22/02/2021 14:07

I said washing machine up thread, and having thought more about it am sticking to that on the grounds plates are much easier to wash by hand that clothes or towels!

wishes1111 · 22/02/2021 14:08

Washing machine 100% I always wash all our clothes so we have no washing to do when we are home.

steppemum · 22/02/2021 14:10

@minipie

Dishwasher

I’m happy to bring a week’s worth of clothes with us and save laundry for when we are back. A week of washing up isn’t a holiday.

absolutley.

without doubt a dishwasher.

Especially if you have one at home, having to do it on holiday is awful.
