To think the new Mr knightly has finally toppled Firth's Darcy from his throne?

I know it's not really new but this weekend I saw the newest version of Emma and, after years and years of Colin Firth's Mr Darcy being my number one Austen inspired crush he has finally been usurped by Johnny Flynn as Knightly. The dance scene and finding out he was really playing the violin are my new coming out of the lake.

I'm not being unreasonable am I?

How has no one mentioned Jeremy Northam as Mr Knightly in the Gwyneth Paltrow version? He’s my fave, although maybe Johnny Flynn is tied for first place.
I’ve never been a Jonny lee Miller fan, I think Mark Strong in the Kate Beckinsale version is better.

Well, all you haters are so wrong anyway! The gazing at the piano scene in P&P is fantastic, but I give you JF gazing at Emma eating a strawberry - he has a vulnerability to his gazes that overtakes CF imo.

I also love the film overall and not happy about the hatey comments on that either! While I do take the point their houses are a bit OTT I found it visually stunning and they really brought out the humour too. I also loved Anya Taylor Joy as Emma, Bill Nighy as Mr W and Josh O'Conner as Mr Elton (don't agree he was wasted in the role - it's a major part and he did it brilliantly.)

I also thought Knightly getting dressed was a lovely touch and made a change from always seeing women getting yanked into corsets in these types of films. The Paltrow version is a massive yawn-fest imo - she has no character development, which was another strength of this new one, and there is zilch chemistry between her and Knightly - just none. It's like she married her brother. Mark Strong is just odd in the role and the Jonny Lee Miller one is okay - but the Emma was far too modern in that one.

So, while I can accept that some of you still love Mr Firth you are wrong to think this isn't the best Mr Knightly, very wrong!

Johnny Flynn has really grown on me the last few years, he was sexy in The Dig on Netflix and I’ve listened to him being interviewed and he sounds really nice. He’s so talented with music and when I realised he didn’t live that far from him I started hoping I could spot him!

Nothing can topple Colin Filth. Mmmm.

I can’t hear David Rintoul’s voice without thinking of Sir Boris in The Big Knights :o

Johnny Flynn was lovely as Dobbin in Vanity Fair. But he is no Colin Firth.

I actually think he has a far greater range than Colin Firth, leaving aside the Darcy v Knightly thing. I might have been conducting a fair bit of research into this over the last week or so...

My favourite ever is Greg Wise as Willoughby (even though Willoughby is obviously a dick).

I din't rate the latest guy as Mr Knightly - agree he would be a good Dobbin though (haven't seen that version of VF).

Yes! Jeremy Northam! The right balance of being a bit sensible, but attractive with it.

I feel we need to mention/pay tribute to Alan Rickman’s Col. Brandon. I never thought Marianne deserved him!

I can't get over his hair - CF is just sexier I'm afraid. My personal preference was Alan Rickman as Col Brandon though.....

No no no - far too young! Jeremy Northam has been the best casting of Mr Knightly so far. More recent adaptations really annoy me as the actors all seem so pre-posessed - not fresh and without modern affectation.

Alan Rickman reciting Spenser will never be bettered. Beautiful voice.

Greg Wise was beautiful as Willoughby. Proper cad territory.

I loved JLM as Knightly, I'll have to watch the new one.

I have never been attracted by men's looks, it was always personality for me and I am now nearly 70, however I must say Johnny Flynn's Mr Knightly made an elderly woman very happy! I am now obsessed with the theme song of the detectorists, because his voice makes me weak at the knees. Yes I think he has knocked Colin Firth out of the water.

I loooooove Jeremy Northam as Mr Knightley - so gentlemanly, charming and utterly gorgeous! Can’t quite choose between him and Firth/Darcy.

Urgh - not getting the Northam love at all - he's fine looking I guess but he plays him like a boring, patronising uncle. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess but it can't be denied he and GP have absolutely no chemistry whatsoever.

I do agree that JF probably isn't classically handsome in the way JN is, but he's sexier, and I'd say the same can be said for CF actually.
