To think the new Mr knightly has finally toppled Firth's Darcy from his throne?

I know it's not really new but this weekend I saw the newest version of Emma and, after years and years of Colin Firth's Mr Darcy being my number one Austen inspired crush he has finally been usurped by Johnny Flynn as Knightly. The dance scene and finding out he was really playing the violin are my new coming out of the lake.

I'm not being unreasonable am I?

God, no. Johnny Lee Miller on the other hand....

motherstongue · 21/02/2021 23:20

@SachaStark my DD aged 16 has an enormous crush on Colin Firth after watching the series about a year ago. She then went on to read P&P. She also gone on to watch just about anything she can find with Colin Firth in it and (inappropriately) swoons about him in front of her mother. 😂

AnneShirleysNewDress · 21/02/2021 23:20

Oh, and Matthew Macfadyen

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 21/02/2021 23:27

@ShagMeRiggins

and the most chemistry-drive dance since Maria and Captain Von Trapp did it for me.

Apparently Christopher Plummer & Julie Andrews didn’t really get on that well. At all. So...excellent acting.

This is true, he said something like "It was like being bashed over the head every day by Mickey Mouse" because Julie was so jolly Grin BUT after SoM they remained lifelong friends
Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 21/02/2021 23:27

Just had a look - nope! C.F. still leading by miles👅

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/02/2021 00:31

Fake news!

That’s nice to know. It shows how people who are completely different from one another can find respect and civility. That made me laugh, JamesMiddleton.

I decided to watch this version of Emma and am about to view the dance, of which I’ve heard so much. Whoop whoop?

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 22/02/2021 01:05

Good god no.

Bainne · 22/02/2021 01:16

Ugh, no. He was totally miscast, and the film was awful — including the lead actress who was so good in The Queen’s Gambit. The locations were all wrong — Donwell looked more like Blenheim Palace than the bachelor residence of a wealthy but low-key landowner who walks everywhere and is sincerely interested in farming — and why the bizarre interest in Knightley and Emma’s arses? I can’t imagine anyone who’s even skimmed the novel depicting Knightley walking through the house dropping his clothes and then literally being dressed by a valet after his bath?

The Romola Garai/ Johnny Lee Miller/ Michael Gambon version is the best for me.

lioncitygirl · 22/02/2021 01:18

How dare you, how very dare you! Never. Colin will always be number 1. 😉😂❤️

DarceyDashwood · 22/02/2021 01:26

He’s a good Knightley (although preferred Johnny Lee Miller I think) but no one will ever top Colin for me! He was the perfect Darcy!

RiverSkater · 22/02/2021 01:30

I think Johnny looks like a young Boris in Emma, though slimmer and sexier. Grin

Bainne · 22/02/2021 01:30

I never get the Colin as Darcy love. He just looks terribly self-conscious and a bit constipated. And damp after his dip.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 01:38

That's exactly what Darcy in the book is like though. It wouldn't have worked if he'd been charming and chatty
JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 01:41

I still don't think the Emma dance scene is a patch on the P&P piano staring scene. It's practically soft porn

Bainne · 22/02/2021 01:42

No, but he’s supposed to be attractive, if ‘above his company’. Colin Firth literally looks like he needs some prune juice and a long session in the loo.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 01:44

I think Austen described Darcy as handsome in the context of a man who was very rich rather than having a particularly pleasant face. And he was stiff and stand offish. I think Firth nailed it

Bainne · 22/02/2021 01:49

He’s not stiff enough for me — David Rintoul is the best Darcy I’ve seen. I think CF’sface has something a bit puddingy about it that doesn’t work for me as D.

JaneJeffer · 22/02/2021 02:10

He’s not stiff enough for me Behave!

I haven't seen the new Mr. Knightley yet but he's not very photogenic is he?

To think the new Mr knightly has finally toppled Firth's Darcy from his throne?
HerbErtlinger · 22/02/2021 02:14

I spent the whole film thinking he looked like Jerome Flynn of Robson and Jerome (I'm a HUGE Soldier, Soldier fan Blush) turns out they are brothers.
Still CF for me though

JaneJeffer · 22/02/2021 02:17

Oh yes I can see the resemblance.

Stringervest · 22/02/2021 02:28

Saw Emma at the cinema last year and was really disappointed. It was made for American audiences primarily IMO. I studied the book at A Level and watched the Gwyneth Paltrow version at the time which I thought was much better.

Pemba · 22/02/2021 05:38

No. Johnny F is attractive, and I like his music, but he's so NOT Mr Knightly. Far too bohemian and young seeming (although ironically he is in fact the right age for Mr Knightly, around 37).
Emma, of course, is nearly 21. She's known Knightly since she was a child, when his brother married her elder sister. He's a safe choice for her (and maybe a bit creepy). He should be far duller.

Colin Firth as a believable Darcy wins.

Connelloni · 22/02/2021 06:37

Absolutely agree, sexiest dance scene ever. I get all flustered watching it. To look at a photo I wouldn’t say he’s right for Knightley at all but in the film...dreamboat. I loved it.

merrymouse · 22/02/2021 06:41

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows

I preferred Johnny Lee Miller.

Then again I thought the new version of Emma was too modern.

Although the scene where Johnny Flynn is getting all flustered and removes his gloves 🤤

Agree and Romola Garal is also my favourite Emma.
