Apologies for posting on AIBU but I wanted to use the voting function

If you got COVID, had you been breaking the rules before you caught it?

No need to comment if you dont wish to, just interested in the numbers

YABU I had broken the rules
YANBU I hadn't broken the rules

What are you trying to prove, OP?

The point of the SD/lockdown rules are to reduce the number of contacts each person has to reduce transmission because you can't infect someone if you don't have contact with them Hmm

On an individual level, breaking the rules probably won't have that much of an effect on your risk on catching or passing on the virus unless you are going to illegal raves every night. If you are seeing a few friends or family on the odd occasion, it won't increase your personal risk hugely because they are the same people you are seeing again and again and, realistically, most of your contact with other people will be the same as people who are sticking to the rules (eg people you live with, work with, at the supermarket or on public transport). It will only be a tiny percentage increase in the number of contacts you have. The problem is the cumulative effect of everyone breaking the rules.

Most people caught Covid from work, school or medical centres (e.g. as inpatients in hospital) but that doesn't mean that the restrictions don't work, it means that they'd be even more spread of the virus if more places, which allow indoor mixing with others were open.

Lovely1a2b3c · 21/02/2021 16:01

Conversely if all schools, workplaces etc. had been fully closed (as opposed to partially closed as they have been this lockdown) then there'd be even less transmission.

Firkinhavinalaugh · 21/02/2021 16:02

Most recent covid catchers I know:

One in healthcare -

Other - family - been breaking the rules all the time, including this weekend where they went to friends for a meal 🙇‍♀️

Apparently quite intelligent...... actually selfish and couldn’t give a fuck about the rest of us!

Shangrilalala · 21/02/2021 16:03

DH and DD (both medics) caught it after stringent rule following, including the wider family being very compliant.

TheLuckiest · 21/02/2021 16:03

Nope. I caught it at school. Following all the rules even at work. Mask-wearing, distancing from colleagues as much as possible, hand washing.
But I work in a unventilated room with windows that don't open.

Muddywoof · 21/02/2021 16:06

I caught it and was following the rules, didn't go anywhere, not even for walks as my DP was shielding and very nervous about it. Only place I had gone was the Doctors for my babys vaccinations. Washed hands, wore masks, only interacted with the Doctor and still brought it home. We were all fine though, just a very slight cough and DP lost taste which is why we tested.

Campervan69 · 21/02/2021 16:22

We caught it mid Jan. DH caught it from a work colleague who caught it from his daughter who was attending school as her mum is NHS key worker. I caught it from DH. No-one in my office caught it fortunately neither did any of our children.

We had been following the rules, but both of us have worked throughout as can't WFH.

Slumberdoon · 21/02/2021 16:41

Stuck to the rules got it either through school/work or supermarket

ILoveSlipperss · 21/02/2021 16:44

I caught it 5 weeks ago and was terribly poorly.
My cousin called me in tears needing help with her inconsolable newborn. I went to help and caught it front her. My own fault totally.

Serin · 21/02/2021 16:50

Caught it last Oct. Ironically I work on Covid ward but dont think I got it at work as we are meticulous re PPE and I had lasted 8months without contracting it.
I think I got it from DH who is a teacher in a huge city school, he was not allowed a mask at that time.

GappyValley · 21/02/2021 16:52

Caught it before the first lockdown but almost certainly from the office before rules were introduced

Slub · 21/02/2021 17:10

I have two close family members who caught it and definitely were not following the rules. They have both made good recoveries but still aren't Hmm

Imapotato · 21/02/2021 17:15

I was following the rules, but working in a covid ward, so I was resigned to the fact I’d get it sooner or later.

Managed to not catch for for 10 months and then got it a week after having my first vaccine!! Only me!

BarbaraofKent · 21/02/2021 17:21

No one is going to admit catching Covid from breaking the rules even though it must have happened a lot!

I caught it before there were any rules, from someone who had been abroad.

UseOfWeapons · 21/02/2021 17:31

There were no rules when I caught it in March 2020. Nor were there any tests, unless you were already at death’s door. I only found out when I had my first antibody test.
It might well explain why I didn’t get COVID despite being redeployed to the highest risk area in the hospital, without adequate PPE.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/02/2021 17:36

The only people I know who have caught it did so from a) kids in nursery/school b) at work c) in hospital when attending an appointment for something else.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/02/2021 17:48

I was working from home - going to the supermarket with mask etc

DD1 was working in a supermarket PT
DD2 working in a sports shop PT
DD3 - and her sisters - attending school in bubbles

They have never had symptoms but my bet is at least one will have had it

itssquidstella · 21/02/2021 17:49

Nope, I caught it from work back in March ( I'm a teacher and fell ill literally the day after schools shut). Luckily was only very mildly ill for a week or so.

Mary46 · 21/02/2021 17:57

I was in work admin in hospital. Supermarket and work. Finding supermarkets quite full of people again. So caught it between those places.

SchrodingersUnicorn · 21/02/2021 18:03

I've worked out i know well over 50 people who have had covid. Every single one of them except one caught it either in hospital, in a school outbreak, or from someone they live with who brought it home from one of those two places.

LBunz · 21/02/2021 18:03

Followed all rules. DP furloughed, only going to supermarket and walking the dog and still got it.

ragged · 21/02/2021 18:12

I've broken rules and haven't caught it, so there....

My huge rule breaking is things like driving to take exercise or meeting up with a single friend outdoors in April for a walk. All rampant rule breaking not allowed. Going out > once a day for exercise. Did that stuff almost daily in March-May 2020.

Sparklehead · 21/02/2021 18:36

I followed the rules and got Covid in January. I work in a hospital on the wards, including the Covid wards and caught it there. Despite self-isolating in my bedroom, I passed it on to DH and 3DC. I was very relieved that I had been following the rules as I would have felt terrible if I’d passed it on to elderly parents etc. It was bad enough knowing I’d infected my immediate family.

Wardrobes123 · 21/02/2021 18:39

We got covid over Christmas. DH had been shielding since March and the rest of us followed the rules very strictly because of shielding DH.

We must have got it through secondary school age DC or from my work (public facing role).

We didn’t see family or friends for months and didn’t even relax for Christmas.

My DH currently ventilated and in ICU. So unfortunately the result we were trying so desperately hard to avoid. It’s incredibly hard to see people rule breaking and moaning about how hard lockdown is.
