To really want a Ring doorbell?

EwwwwDavid · 21/02/2021 01:33

Not even sure why I want one. I just do! I never buy myself anything and I really fancy getting one. Problem is, I'm not sure how to tell the difference and they're all different prices. Costco seem to have a good deal but can't tell if it's better than Amazon as all have different descriptions. Any advice welcomed!

For those saying they cost money to subscribe. I have one and I pay £2.50 a month. Nothing at all when you think about the extra security it gives you

Blublubblubbing · 22/02/2021 23:04

Until today I thought it was giving me extra security until I realised why I wasn't seeing anyone breaking into my car.. I cant believe how easy they are to hack/block! Literally happened last night for the second time and I couldn't understand why it had recorded every other second of the day and night but not the footage of my car being broken into. I'm afraid I don’t rate them anymore also because of the slowness others mention. I've never been able to connect to it before the person has walked away.

Got one about 3 weeks ago. It dingdongs on our Alexas quick enough but as others have said, by the time the echo show or my phone pings up with the video they've walked off.
My Internet connection is dreadful so it could be that.

SnackSizeRaisin · 22/02/2021 23:32

You aren't thinking like a criminal. If I wanted to burgle your house, I'd make sure my face was obscured, then prise your fancy doorbell off the wall/door with a large screwdriver or jemmy. It's only going to deter casual thieves.

But the vast majority of thieves are opportunists. They will choose a house with no CCTV instead of risking to be seen on the street removing someone's doorbell. Most criminals are keen to avoid being caught and will go for an easy target! If you have something of great value in the house that someone would go to great lengths to steal, presumably you would take additional steps to secure it.

It's a bit of a sad world when these things are needed. But we had someone try several doors in our street at 4am the night before last..only knew because next door captured it on CCTV. Obviously the CCTV did not deter in this case..but it's still made us more careful about keeping doors locked

I got one last year, I don't use it that much for deliveries as I'm now permanently wfh so am never out! BUT I did discover my 14 yr old son had been sneaking out at 2am on his bike to see his girlfriend Shock He won't be doing that again.

BlueSoop · 22/02/2021 23:48

I really wanted one until I realised it does bugger all unless you pay for a monthly subscription. I could do without another bill.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 22/02/2021 23:55

I have had mine for 3 years now and I love it. I pay £24 for a year for subscription

BluePeterVag · 23/02/2021 00:11

Ring Doorbells have really buggered up my Random Acts of Kindness. I can’t drop knock and run anymore without being spotted. This time of year I usually leave bunches of daffodils for people now I need a disguise. Thank goodness for masks and sunglasses Grin

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 23/02/2021 00:16

BluePeterVag disguise yourself as a burglar with a swag bag, then pull a bunch of daffodils from it!

I love our ring doorbell, it's way more helpful than I thought it would be. Wouldn't be without one now

BluePeterVag · 23/02/2021 01:48

I love that idea SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel. It starts a chain of cheer. I leave the initial batch of flowers, with a note about it being a random act of kindness and to pay it forward if you can, people post on the local fb page to thank the mystery person, and then before you know it it has multiplied. Grin

Thats not true. The monthly subscription is optional. It works perfectly well without it
@cctvrec - thanks for that info.
I'd like something that covers my front and back door.
Does the device you bought do that / can it be added to please?
You can buy multiple cameras for the same system. It's just a small box that you pop inside that picks up your WiFi and it connects to the camera signals.

This...

All security can be thwarted with enough time and/or effort. The best you can do to make your house/car/whatever more difficult than someone else’s.

If you were a random burglar who didn’t have inside knowledge of a house’s contents, which would you go for, the one with the camera or without? The same goes for dogs, lots of random activity, and more difficult locks. They will definitely look for signs that will make their job more difficult and move on to something easier if given the choice.

@Frogartist

I don't understand why it's handy for deliveries. Surely telling a stranger standing in front of your house that you're not at home is not a great idea?
I've spoken to couriers from inside the house. Just said, "I'm a bit busy to come to the door, can you leave it on the step please?"
megletsecond · 23/02/2021 07:28

Do you need your phone turned on all the time / all night then? Mine is always off at night so without paying for the recording option it would be pointless.
We're also so close to the path that everyone triggers my security light when they walk past. I don't mind this but I'm not sure I'd want my phone pinging about it.

Hydrate · 23/02/2021 07:49

Ours recorded a guy breaking into our neighbours car.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 23/02/2021 08:00

You can set sensitivity and zones to narrow the area it records/reacts to. We’re semi-detached so I have ours angled away from our neighbours front door, and have blocked out the area of their front path so it doesn’t record them coming and going as that would have been too intrusive.

purplebagladylovesgin · 23/02/2021 10:29

I love ours, the stress in the house just dropped away (shielding group 4).
The app Ring2 is much faster at answering it too. We can chat to delivery drivers without opening the door, although I wave at the window whilst speaking through the ring doorbell.

I've never told a stranger I'm not home. If it's a delivery I just say to them to leave the parcel at the door. Sometimes I'm home but in my bed or something, sometimes I'm out, but they don't know which

May17th · 03/03/2021 08:33

I have purchased the Ring view cam for your peep hole. It’s great the picture is fantastic and I think the trial for the app is free for 30 days.

The only criticism is whilst installing the device through the wire is really delicate but there’s an extra one in the box and RING sent me another one for free.

I purchased a chime too. Very pleased and I would definitely recommend.
