To really want a Ring doorbell?

EwwwwDavid · 21/02/2021 01:33

Not even sure why I want one. I just do! I never buy myself anything and I really fancy getting one. Problem is, I'm not sure how to tell the difference and they're all different prices. Costco seem to have a good deal but can't tell if it's better than Amazon as all have different descriptions. Any advice welcomed!

The Ring works with motion so it alerts you as someone is approaching (you can turn this off if you wish to just alert if the doorbell is actually rung) so you can see if anyone coming to your house looks a bit suspect - or delivery people doing a ‘drop and run’.

TokyoSushi · 22/02/2021 17:54

Oh well this is the thread I came looking for, I have wanted one forever, DM is buying me one for my birthday in a couple of weeks (and other things) I am SO excited!!! 😂 😂

@NeverDropYourMoonCup

Am I being stupid - or wouldn't people just nick the doorbell (with a facemask and hoodie) before/instead of breaking in?

Most delivery and 'other' people ignore doorbells and bang on the door, anyhow.

I don't think you are being stupid - surely a person with suitable identity concealed (face covering, etc) could steal the camera or disable it. There would be evidence of the time at which it happened though - and possibly other background info, so probably better than nothing.
DynamoKev · 22/02/2021 18:14

Just a way to dissuade a casual opportunist rather than a determined thief, like most security.

SortYourOwnBloodyPost · 22/02/2021 18:23

How weird, we literally just bought one tonight!

We got the one with flood lights and all the other gubbins.
Came to about £250

SnowCrocus · 22/02/2021 18:24

Our neighbour's car was stolen a couple of years ago, and the theft plus closeup of the thief's face (he was walking very slowly past our house and up and down the street before among his move after midnight) was on our video doorbell footage, which we shared with the police. So I think it's worth it from that point of view.

SnowCrocus · 22/02/2021 18:24

before making his move, even

Blublubblubbing · 22/02/2021 18:30

**I would go for wired home security where possible. In my area they have been using WiFi blockers so any wireless cctv systems were completely useless.

I have had my car broken into twice and nothing was picked up for this reason. I'm so angry that this is even possible! If you get one get a wired one!

52andblue · 22/02/2021 18:31

@cctvrec - thanks for that info.
I'd like something that covers my front and back door.
Does the device you bought do that / can it be added to please?

Redglitter · 22/02/2021 18:35

The Ring doorbell activateswhen there's movement so you'd know someone is approaching your door The doorbell is screwed or hardwired onto your door so it's not like they can just come and lift it off. So no your scenario really wouldn't happen

Frogartist · 22/02/2021 18:37

I don't understand why it's handy for deliveries. Surely telling a stranger standing in front of your house that you're not at home is not a great idea?

That's interesting (and really helpful), as I have been thinking about getting one for ages (hardwired, as I've got everything all there already - although the bell is actually fitted into the wall, not the door).

I didn't want to risk spending loads of money for something somebody's just going to lift up as though they were about to change a battery.

Thank you!

Nah, you just say im on the loo, on a call or down the garden.

We wfh, and usually are in a call, which was why we were missing them.

Frogartist · 22/02/2021 19:54

Ah, I suppose you don't have your own camera on!

Dimpley · 22/02/2021 20:18

I love mine. I work at the top of my house and it’s 3 flights down to the front door. If I have deliveries I can just chat to the delivery person without moving. I’ve had police review footage when a crime was committed locally. It’s also captured some comedy moments with the neighbours and various pets.

FredaFox · 22/02/2021 20:23

Does anybody use an echo with theirs?
My phone connects quickly when the doorbell is pressed but my mums Android is slower, wondering if the echo show would be good for her?

schoolcook · 22/02/2021 20:42

Since I got mine I've found that delivery drivers no longer wait to see if anyone is home before dumping my valuable parcels on the step - in full view of a very main road.

And agree with others that by the time you react to the notification the person has usually been and gone.

It amuses my teenage daughter to yell at me through it and scare the living daylights out of me though so well worth the money Grin

BillMasheen · 22/02/2021 21:09

@FredaFox, yes a relative does, and yes it works well. Considering getting one ourselves.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 22/02/2021 21:12

Our notifications seem instantaneous so not had any issues with delays.

Jackie2022 · 22/02/2021 21:16

I think everyone should have some form of camera, doesn’t have to be a ring doorbell specifically. If an unfortunate occasion occurs where you need surveillance footage, you’ll be so relieved to have access to it

Even on a basic level they’re useful. I used to have a DPD driver that would sign parcels in my name when I was at work, so if anything happened to the parcel before I got home I always assumed I would be fucked as they have “proof” I signed for the parcel. The cctv would just prove that I didn’t sign for it, and what may have happened if it went missing

You aren't thinking like a criminal. If I wanted to burgle your house, I'd make sure my face was obscured, then prise your fancy doorbell off the wall/door with a large screwdriver or jemmy. It's only going to deter casual thieves.
HerRoyalNotness · 22/02/2021 21:28

We have a hardwired one with doorbell and a security light style at the back. My son mostly uses it to check when his cat when out if she hasn’t come back in yet Grin.

We e had the neighbour ask once if we saw anything when à laptop that got delivered went missing. Sadly not.

Ring also do security lights with a camera. I got one for our backyard. (In US)

Again that probably wouldn't happen. By the time someone reached the front door their image will have been captured so if they've disguised themselves there wouldn't really be anything yo be gained by removing the doorbell. They'd be wasting valuable breaking in time for no benefit 😊

BettyBooth · 22/02/2021 21:46

@floppybit

Mines been absolutely rubbish, it takes so long to connect to my phone that by the time I can see who's there they've already gone!! Also, half the time it doesn't ring at all
Mine’s the same, it’s a Ring 3.

It cost £100 for the electrician to install it so
to return it and then have a replacement installed
would be out of the question financially.
It’s great when it works but it can’t be relied on in my experience.
