fullfact.org/

I'm sick to the back teeth of trying to reason with the conspiracy theorists (I have a couple in my family so can't just 'disown') and want everyone to do a bit of research before believing the 'experts' on YouTube.

Rant over.

ps. While I've written this in the context of Covid the site covers other stuff as well.

YANBU.
MIL constantly sends me 'emergency alerts' or 'the police are saying...' shite (I'm police)
I always do a 3 second Google search which shows them to be a hoax, I don't know why these people don't do the same. Snopes is another good website for fact checking.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 20/02/2021 20:32

Snopes is good also

MumofPsuedoAdult · 20/02/2021 20:34

Yes agreed, Snopes is good too. I can't understand why people don't think to check either of them before blindly believing what's on social media?

I'd be interested to hear from the people who have voted YABU (no judgement, just curious).

I voted YABU because I’m not an idiot, I don’t need to check a website to tell me what to believe

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 20/02/2021 20:37

When people I know (who are, on paper, smart) share crap of Facebook about Eastern European men skulking round playgrounds handing out gummy bear sweets that are actually ecstasy I simply cope and paste the Snopes link, no explanation, I can't be arsed with that level of stupidity and casual racism. SIL actually fell out with me about it 🥴

cheeseybean · 20/02/2021 20:37

Ah but OP they will think those fact checking sites are run by Big Pharma Wink

MumofPsuedoAdult · 20/02/2021 20:40

@ridingonaroomba if you're not getting your info from 'a website' where you getting it from and how do you verify it?

People don’t check because they like the idea that there’s some higher power out there which is in charge of everything, and clearly being more competent and successful than visible structures and governments.

The terrifying and hilarious truth is, of course, that there isn’t a joined up higher power, it really is just the structures and people we can actually see running things. But that’s boring and lacks the frisson which I think the people who subscribe to these conspiracy theories enjoy.

I said I don’t need a website to tell me what to believe, I’m perfectly capable of reading and digesting the news from my trusted sources, I don’t feel the need to fact check every article I read

TravellingTilbury · 20/02/2021 21:12

lol is that the same FullFact that received £££ by facebook for every 'fact' is factchecks on facebook ...

Some of the fact check sites peddle their own crap mix of bad science and disinformation - especially to do with PCR tests and false positives (don't get me started).

They are propaganda, just like most other sites.
