Help! Washing machine has exploded!

LaBellySausage · 20/02/2021 11:07

So the washing machine has finally packed in and is pissing water everywhere. Bastard. It's been fixed loads of times but think we now need a new one.

I've got a toddler, a grubby husband, and I'm a doctor so need to wash my manky covid encrusted scrubs for work on Monday: urgent replacement needed.

For the AIBU police I'm posting for traffic and no I don't want to post in a washing machine thread.

Recommendations for a washer-drier please. I have actually never bought one before so don't know where to start.

Usually washer dryers are a massive no on here (and from my experience in actual real life Grin) but this thread seems to be different! I'd just say that if you are going to get a washer dryer then proceed with massive caution!

I’ve got a washer/dryer as no space for separate machines. We had a Samsung eco bubble about 18 mths ago. It’s fab. 9kg washing & 5kg drying. It has its own eco drum clean so self cleans and has a 10 year warranty. It’s A rated for energy efficiency. You can add items to wash when it’s washing through the door window. The eco bubble allows you to extend wash time for dirty clothes. There’s a 15 min quick wash , a 49 min daily wash and an 1hr & 4 min cotton wash as well as much longer washes. Dries on 2 settings for 30min + intervals. It has smart control (for use with your phone or home devices like Google). I love it.

A WARNING about AO.

If you choose a Beko machine and want it fitted you might find that you need different fittings. They will only tell you this after they have delivered the machine and discovered it doesn't fit the ends of your pipes.

They will then offer to leave it in the middle of your kitchen so you can fit it yourself, or take it back and leave you with no working machine.

You ned=ed to ensure it can be fitted before you get it delivered.

PurpleMustang · 20/02/2021 12:14

I would also recommend AO. I have a Hoover machine and is great. Don't get a washer dryer. They are just beyond awful. You can only dry half or a third of the load at a time as it otherwise takes forever. Which then means the dryer is forever being used when you want to do another wash load.

RupertRupertTheBear · 20/02/2021 12:15

I have a beko washer dryer and it's ok.

ScaredOfDinosaurs · 20/02/2021 12:22

I love my washer dryer. Hotpoint, six years old now but works perfectly.

I thought it was shit for the first couple of years I had it because I was overloading it and mixing synthetics with cotton. So it didn't dry stuff well.

They aren't all shit, but you do need to pay attention to the instructions!

LadyPoison · 20/02/2021 12:26

See what AO have available for immediate delivery.

I won't buy Whirlpool after the safety recall debacle but I'm loving my LG

AdventureIsWaiting · 20/02/2021 12:35

Miele or Bosch seem to be indestructible. I wouldn't get a washer/drier though as IME they do neither well. Instead I'd recommend getting a heated airer (assuming it's scrubs and toddler clothes that need to be ready quickly, not e.g. heavy fabric like jeans). Lakeland do a heated airer that gets great reviews and their shops are open for click and collect at the moment.

John Lewis are also doing click and collect from Waitrose, not sure if they are also offering it at JL shops. However I've found Argos pretty good for availability of products (never bought large electronics from them though).

LegendDairy · 20/02/2021 12:38

Another vote for AO. Our packed in on the Sunday we had the new one installed on Tuesday and the old one taken away. Worth every penny.

PurplePi · 20/02/2021 12:38

My 10-year-old Miele packed in a month ago. I've replaced it with a 9kg/6kg Samsung - as it cost £1,200 less than the current Miele. The Samsung doesn't have the light-up drum and is a bit noisier on the spin, but it plays a cheery tune when it finishes.

AdventureIsWaiting · 20/02/2021 12:38

Just seen all the pro washer-dryer posts! I had one in a houseshare once. All my clothes ended up smelling 'not quite clean', and I invariably had to either a) finish drying them by the radiator or b) ended up with crunchy horrible clothes that had been over-dried, with some softer ones in the middle, or c) ended up constantly taking items out when they were ready to leave the rest to dry perfectly, so three or four trips to the machine for one load of washing. You could say user error, except I lived there for 18 months and no matter what I tried it was the same.

fatbottomgirl67 · 20/02/2021 13:22

We have the Samsung and got it from AO. Bloomin love it

HelebethH · 20/02/2021 13:56

I second the heated airer idea. My daughter has The large one in her very small house. Family of four. Al dries o/night. Folds away when it in use and very cheap to run.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/02/2021 15:09

Ao for delivery.

Washer dryers don't dry well. Better off with doing a big load in the machine and drying on airers, line or heated airer.

We dry quickly on bog standard airers . Other places we have stayed would never have dried on an airer ever ever ever but the heated airer worked very well.

User7538943 · 20/02/2021 15:16

AO for quick delivery, JL give a better guarantee but you may have to wait a couple of days for delivery.

Starisnotanumber · 20/02/2021 16:56

Ao have a discount store called elek direct which has washer dryers in from 225.00 with 19.00 delivery.
May have something that you are looking for.

rosiejaune · 20/02/2021 17:36

Well I agree washer dryers are generally not as good as separate machines (or not having a dryer at all; we have a Lakeland heated airer instead). You are trying to cram the functions of two machines into the same space. And there is more to go wrong.

Miele are considered the gold standard in washing machines (they do have a couple of washer dryers as well). I recently bought one of their washers and am very happy with it so far.

It's because they have a stainless steel tub (outer drum), rather than welded plastic, so they are more repairable than cheaper machines, which need scrapping if anything inside the tub breaks, as it can't be replaced.

rosiejaune · 20/02/2021 17:37

Oh and also they have cast iron spiders, which don't disintegrate like the aluminium ones other machines use.

Lincslady53 · 20/02/2021 17:42

We have a Samsung and it is brilliant.

BashfulClam · 20/02/2021 17:47

I swear by Candy, our first one lasted 10 years before it took my clothes hostage. The next one is still going string 9 years later. The dryer is a good function.

SuperDuperJezebel · 20/02/2021 20:07

We have a zanussi Lindo 1000 washer dryer and it's great. I'm a nanny and at work they've just got the Bosch one that's the which best buy and that's also great. The trick seems to be to do an extra spin before you dry it.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 20/02/2021 20:15

If it’s not too late...

I’d always recommend checking programme times when comparing energy efficiency as an A rated programme might take 3 hours or more with a quick wash being available, but at higher cost.

Miele generally good for efficiency & long lasting.

LesLavandes · 21/02/2021 08:53

Don't buy a cheap washer/dryer. I would go for a Miele. They last for years

hansgrueber · 21/02/2021 13:00

@LaBellySausage

(I don't mind paying a lot if it'll not break down every 4 months)
I've had a Miele 15 years and it's cost me nothing in repairs, they're about 600 now, some places will do a 5 years free warrenty.
JesusAteMyHamster · 21/02/2021 13:08

Don't get a washer dryer. They're shit.

Get a bottom level Miele. They're bomb proof. My cheapest that's sold Miele is 14 years old, I think I paid £550 for it and they still cost about that now.
