Help! Washing machine has exploded!

LaBellySausage · 20/02/2021 11:07

So the washing machine has finally packed in and is pissing water everywhere. Bastard. It's been fixed loads of times but think we now need a new one.

I've got a toddler, a grubby husband, and I'm a doctor so need to wash my manky covid encrusted scrubs for work on Monday: urgent replacement needed.

For the AIBU police I'm posting for traffic and no I don't want to post in a washing machine thread.

Recommendations for a washer-drier please. I have actually never bought one before so don't know where to start.

Do you have to have a washer dryer? They break down more and aren’t as great at rather job as separate machines.

I spend my life washing and our old machine broke. We got a 9kg drum Beko from AO.com with a 1600rpm spin - it is fantastic. The drying time has been massively reduced as the spin is so effective.

If you can get both in I’d highly recommend it. You can stack dryer on washer with proper mounting brackets.

HelebethH · 20/02/2021 11:22

What county are you in.? We have a local one here in Devon that delivers to Devon Cornwall and some parts of Somerset same or next day FOC . Also usually pricematches. May be worth looking at local independents

Merryoldgoat · 20/02/2021 11:22

I have bought all my appliances from AO.com in the last 10 years. Superb service.

AgentProvocateur · 20/02/2021 11:23

OP, my recommendation would be to NOT get a washer dryer. Twice as much to go
wrong and the dryer on both the models I’ve had was shit. It just made the clothes hot, not dry.

Woeismethischristmas · 20/02/2021 11:24

AO do fast delivery and will take away your old machine for a fee. My old Bosch washing machine died two years ago and I replaced with a cheap candy vita, it went wrong after a year and I had to sign up for thier extended care plan 15.99 per month for a year to get it fixed, the same part, motherboard, went again within a year so I think they’re designed to fail after a certain amount of use.

Overall it’s cost me more than if I’d bought another Bosch which I’ve found really reliable previously. If you’re going for a cheap machine I’d get ao protection as it’s more in the 6-7 quid a month bracket and they’re supposed to be really good at just replacing the machine when it goes wrong.

noblegreenk · 20/02/2021 11:26

I'd have a look at AO. I have a 10kg Beko at the mo. It's pretty basic but it's been the best washing machine we've had despite having expensive ones in the past.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 20/02/2021 11:26

You will be more likely to get next day delivery if you don’t need connection services.

Can you or your DP fit it yourselves? It’s not hard, just connecting a y shaped tube - easier than say a ventilator - and you tube can show you how.

Washer/dryers compromise max load, so typically you can wash 7-8 kg but only dry 4-5kg. Not an issue for scrubs, but think about it for bedding etc.

Brands - avoid cheap and bottom of range Bosch. Other than that down to budget. Look at warranties too. Samsung generally have 5 years + across their range.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/02/2021 11:26

@mnahmnah

Curry’s delivery is shocking. We’ve had problems in many occasions. Wouldn’t go back.

Ao.com are great.

Whereas for us, curry's have always been excellent, ao.com pretty good and John Lewis appalling on many occasions.

We've been extremely lucky with all white goods, two washing machines have lasted around 12 years each, both replaced when they were on their way out, not actually completely dead. Bendix, zanussi and now AEG.

OP can you or DH get a load to a laundrette this weekend, or even ask a friend or family member to do so you don't rush into a purchase you may regret and then you can take time to get a decent machine that suits your needs and budget.

LaBellySausage · 20/02/2021 11:27

Thank you for the AO recommendation- currently looking. I can probbly manage till the middle of next week and just boil my scrubs then hand wash. The feral child/husband can manage.

I didn't know that washer dryers were considered rubbish? Is it a bad idea? We actually only currently have a washing machine (no dryer) because we have an Aga which costs a fortune so dry clothes on a pulley rail above it but we'd like a dryer for occasional/emergency use. Are they all bad?

I have a Miele washer dryer. It dries properly. I don’t faff about with detergent and stuff, it’s got two 1l cartridges and it takes how much detergent it needs on a press of a button.

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 20/02/2021 11:29

I’ve got a Samsung Ecobubble washer dryer and it’s brilliant

LaBellySausage · 20/02/2021 11:30

11 month old has decided now is a good time to have a meltdown because she can't have mummy's phone. Hmm
Fucking hell.

Washer dryers are shite. Don't do it

TierFourTears · 20/02/2021 11:32

I'd go to ao.com, and look at what is available with 10kg+ load for delivery tomorrow. Then look at reviews for those models. I dont think you will have much choice.

sproutsandparsnips · 20/02/2021 11:33

I second the Beko recommendations but washer only. We have a separate tumble dryer that I only use for emergencies and it's 17 years old now. But if you haven't got room I would leave it out and get a washer dryer.

sproutsandparsnips · 20/02/2021 11:34

Sorry not get a washer dryer!

RJnomore1 · 20/02/2021 11:42

No, people always say they’re bad but we had them for years in our last place with no problems. The Smeg one was great the indesit we replaced it with after a decade less so mind you.

Cactusowl · 20/02/2021 11:48

I’ve got a John Lewis washer dryer and would replace with the same - mines been going strong for at least 7 years.

LaBellySausage · 20/02/2021 11:48

Had a look at the Samsung ones but looks like they're B energy rated and 9kg. I can get a Haier 10kg one (A rated) for £699 delivered tomorrow. We do have the space for a separate dryer but I'd just rather not have a whole extra machine there for a dry function we will only use v v occasionally since we mainly just hang stuff above the Aga (if that makes sense)

Anyone had a Haier? I've never even heard of it butthe reviews are really good

Thanks so much for all the advice! AO seems great

Please don’t get a washer dryer. They break down. They don’t wash well and they don’t dry.

If you want a reliable washer I’d get a Miele. You’d likely not get it by Monday though. Couldn’t you stick all your clothes in a black bag for a week or however long it takes? Toddler and husband stay grubby. You’ll thank me when your machine is still going in 20 years.

dizzy174 · 20/02/2021 11:54

if you are buying a washer / dryer you need one with the fastest spin possible to reduce the drying time. i have a hotpoint with a 1600 spin, and i love it.

MatildaTheCat · 20/02/2021 11:55

My Meile came with a 10 year parts and labour guarantee and is now 14. I’d recommend waiting for the model you want and if necessary use the service wash at a laundrette for a couple of days.

SmudgedWardrobeHamster · 20/02/2021 11:57

John Lewis do next day delivery fir £19.99 to selected areas and they have Miele. Honestly I’ve tried every brand of washer and I know the stress when they break. Also check the new machine has an anti water leak thingy so you never get water pouring all over your floor again.

iloveredwine · 20/02/2021 11:57

Ao online are great. We have an LG direct drive washer dryer and its brilliant

B33Fr33 · 20/02/2021 11:59

Our AEG was pretty good. I say was, that's not entirely fair as it still works and all the repairs have been straight forward. But I've decided to ditch the dryer.
