I recently moved to a new city. I had some new friends round and discovered that not one of them had heard of a (criminal) fence. This is a word that everyone I knew before would have known.

Then I was listening to the radio and they used the word antimacassar which I had never heard of. Turns out everyone in my new city knows it.

So, a poll. Do you know

  1. what a (criminal) fence is only

  2. what an antimacassar is only

  3. both

  4. neither

Both, but I love the thought that you might gently introduce the word antimacassar into every conversation to see if it raises an eyebrow.

  1. They’re both perfectly ordinary words.

Both (London).

Only from books or TV though, I've never heard anyone use the words normally.

BlueCowWonders · 20/02/2021 07:29

Both, but it's nothing to do with a new city, just a different circle of friends/ acquaintances.
But I love words and their roots. And I also love learning Smile

I'd love to know how you've been finding out that everyone knows the word antimacassar! I mean, it's not a regional word but it's a bit of an old fashioned one to pop up every day!

MiniTheMinx · 20/02/2021 07:31
  1. antimacassar Yep, but no one uses these anymore

Not a clue what a criminal (fence) is unless you are referring to a criminal who fences stolen goods.
