OK slightly lighthearted as I’m 49 but I didn’t think I looked old

Normally people are surprised at my age, although I now know they’ve just been being polite Angry.

Shit. I’m just not ready to be an old lady yet!

I was talking to someone recently who was lamenting how things were different 'in our day'. He was 62, a good 22 years older than me, yet somehow thought we were of similar ages!

But then again, I also got asked which uni I go to, by a 20-something. I'll be dining out on that one for a while!

A child about 8 years old came in to my work the other day with his mum and as they left he turned round and did the 'L' this forehead calling me a loser. Actually hurt my feelings 😂 I feel your pain OP. I had my son as a teen and had a friend at primary school who dropped her grandson off every day. She was mid 40s and I'd refer to her as 'Sam's nan'. She must have heard me say this. She was Sam's nan..... apart from when my son was in year 6 someone else told me she was Sam's mum. Felt like shit for ages because of it 😂

What a little shit for doing the Loser sign.

Sooverthis1 · 19/02/2021 12:36

Op when I was 24 i was a trainee teacher and my teenagers in class would describe me as old! I think teenagers think anyone over 25 is old!

ghostyslovesheets · 19/02/2021 12:40

thing is you ARE old to teenagers - if they are 15 you are 25 years older - that's OLD

I have worked with teens since I was 25 - I was old then - a whole 10 years older - so ancient - it's no biggy

We do get old!

LApprentiSorcier · 19/02/2021 12:44

My mum (30 years older than me) was once mistaken for my sister. I was only about 25 and I was mortified. She was chuffed, though!

I think I am naturally quite old-looking. I hope I will eventually grow into my looks, maybe when I'm 70 ...

ChristmasFluff · 19/02/2021 12:51

A mime artist once thought my sister was my mum - I do not let her forget it.

I've never been called old (mid 50s), but I act quite young and I walk in a young way, IYSWIM. I'm basically bursting with energy, like Tigger, so I think people see me as annoying rather than old.

The randomness of 'a mime artist' made me laugh!

Did he/she communicate this through mime?

I've had people leaping up to offer me their seat on the tube since I was about 45, it's so depressing. On one notable occasion a guy was gesturing to me, around 2 women in their 60s. I pretended not to see him, and then the women started trying to get my attention as well to get me to sit down. I steadily kept my gaze averted elsewhere then thankfully it was my stop.

I'm not overweight (was kidding myself for a while they may think I was pregnant), or particularly attractive (friends kindly suggesting this may be a reason young men were leaping up for me) so I can only assume I look spectacularly knackered for my age.

Malbecfan · 19/02/2021 13:05

My year 5s were trying to guess my age. One of them said 70 - thanks kid - so I explained that people retire when they get to their mid 60s. Then another said 30, so I reminded them I have a 21 year old DD. "Oh sorry" she said. "You must be 31 then"! I'm in my early 50s...

SplendidSuns1000 · 19/02/2021 15:13

I'm 22, my 14 year old niece called me vintage the other day...

BrideofBideford · 19/02/2021 15:24

It hurts being told we are old as we never feel old inside, not at 40, not at 60, not even at 80)

My dad was devastated by being called “an old man” by another cyclist. Yes my dad cycles at 83. No he does not feel “old” Grin

I have degenerated discs in my back, and the doc said cheerfully it was just due to my age...

Like you, I am 49

Take it on the chin and move on Wine

DSD then 14 was minding DS (1yo) in the pram at an attraction while I went to the loo. Two judgemental old bags loudly tutted at her and commented on 'teenagers having babies'. To my endless admiration she told them loudly 'he's my brother!' I wish I could have seen their faces.

LakieLady · 19/02/2021 16:31

@CMOTDibbler

Last year I went swimming, and the receptionist charged me the OAP rate. I was 47!
Lol.

I was off work with depression when I was about 42. I went swimming, in the hope it would make me feel better, and was a bit bemused by the fact that the pool was full of old people.

I checked the session times on my way out and was very upset to see that they'd let me into an over-50s session. Angry

JustCallMeBrittany · 19/02/2021 16:34

Got asked about my retirement by someone when they heard I was leaving my job.

Ffs I am 40🤣
