Just that really.
Wondering how much debt the average person is in.. Including mortgage, loans, credit cards, overdraft?

Just curious!

OP posts:

Credit card £22k
Mortgage £184k

Soon to be (when we move and pay off credit card with the equity);
Credit card £0
Mortgage £324k

NaughtipussMaximus · 19/02/2021 18:07

Just the mortgage.

BunsyGirl · 19/02/2021 18:08

£495k on our mortgage. No other debts. House is worth £1 million so we could move somewhere cheaper if necessary and clear the mortgage.

Jontomsam · 19/02/2021 18:08

None, mortgage paid last year cars leased thru work and don’t do credit of any kind.

Lolwhat · 19/02/2021 18:09

None :)

1forAll74 · 19/02/2021 18:11

Never had a credit card, or any finance for a car, never get tempted to buy anything that I cant afford, and never borrow any money, and live quite frugally.

PumpkinPlantPot · 19/02/2021 18:17

No mortgage, but have a student loan, plus some legal fees I'm still paying off (family court over custody of my DD before anyone asks), plus a credit card.

Adds up to over £20k, probably closer to £30k

winniestone37 · 19/02/2021 18:19

😞 this thread would imply most people have no debt. I have about £400’000
We just got our first mortgage!

WannabemoreWeaver · 19/02/2021 18:21

6k cc and loan. Paying it off and have it on low or 0% so should be done by next year. 65L mortgage left.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 19/02/2021 18:22

About 1600

Finance on my car which will be paid off this time next year and a couple hundred on my credit card which I'll pay in full next month.

TickyTacky · 19/02/2021 18:26

Between 5-6k in personal debt on store cards and credit cards. I was a twit. Older and wider now!
I don't really count student loan as a debt yet as I'm still studying.

TickyTacky · 19/02/2021 18:28

I'd just like to add to others like me, don't feel ashamed. Sorting a way out is a relief and charities like stepchange will help. Don't feel less of a person because you have debt Flowers

Ginfizplease · 19/02/2021 18:32

Mortgage of 130k (but will be paid off in 10 years max way before I'm 50). I don't personally count mortgages as debt.

Student loan - but no idea how much remaining. I don't particularly consider that a debt either, more a graduate tax.

If someone asks me if I have any debts I'd say no?

Thelikelylass · 19/02/2021 18:34

£20k - I spent a lot of money on booze, men and fast cars. The rest I just squandered. Had a lot of fun along the way.

OceanDreams · 19/02/2021 18:36

110k mortgage, husband and I both about 5k on each cc, 7k car loan each. Not an amazing position but feel it could be worse. Every area of credit is in the process of being paid off.

FredtheCatsMum · 19/02/2021 18:41

Mortgage of about £120k, on a £440k house.
Cards paid off every month, nothing else. If I need to borrow, I use an offset on the mortgage, but very rarely. I've overpaid a lot on the mortgage so on track to pay it all off in about 10 years, although in theory it runs for another 18

Ilovewatermelon · 19/02/2021 18:44

Read a few pages out of interest, started feeling like an absolute failure in life until I came across @dreamwatch & @opalescent - so thanks 😘

I have been in debt as long as I can remember, from the age of 18 I had store cards and overdrafts thrown at me when I was earning 12k a year. Very irresponsible lending to someone of that age!

After earning a half decent wage for the next 12 years I spent my time consolidating my debt, add on car finance and extremely high rents down South and it crept up and up!!

Parents don't own their properties and only have savings for their funeral. I feel a bit sorry for my situation as can't see myself ever getting on the property ladder, it just feels unobtainable, maybe I've just not grown up with the right midset or education towards moneyConfused

PurpleandOrange · 19/02/2021 18:45

Approx 650k on mortgage. Hope to increase that by 200k-ish when it comes up for renewal in June given current interest rates (especially if they fall further, as they are expected to) and invest the additional borrowings in muti-asset funds

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 19/02/2021 18:48

Mortgage only with five years to go

Kay1341 · 19/02/2021 18:54

I'm doing a project for work on this, and was reading the newest Financial Lives Survey report today - excluding mortgage, UK adult on average have about £5,500 debt, and about £2,900 if you exclude student loans too. Quite interesting comparing the responses in this thread to those figures.

donttouchmyhair · 19/02/2021 18:57

Only on Mumsnet do you get 98% of posters saying they own 2 houses outright and have 500k in saving Grin

I have 190k left of my mortgage, 9k left on my car loan and about 2k on credit card.

JustAnotherOldMan · 19/02/2021 18:58

None

Tiredwiththeshits · 19/02/2021 18:59

£2900 on credit card. Clear it every so often with a decent dividend.

No savings as such maybe £1000 cash or so in the house. And £1200 invested in stocks / shares.

I'd say I'm pretty average then. Mortgage aside I have about £3800 in unsecured debt. But as someone said pages and pages back, these replies are only a snapshot. I was in debt to the equivalent of a year's salary about 8 years ago. It was a stressful place to be but I paid it all back, or at least nearly have.
SpeakingFranglais · 19/02/2021 19:01

£0.00

Mortgage paid off, no loans, credit card always paid off in full and only used for financial security on large purchases such as holidays.

But I’m 54 now not 24 and I had all the above when I was younger.
