Just that really.
Wondering how much debt the average person is in.. Including mortgage, loans, credit cards, overdraft?

Just curious!

None. Dont own a home though. Currently saving up a deposit, currently have a 20% deposit saved hoping to save a 30/40% deposit in the next 5 years

OatcakeCravings · 18/02/2021 07:35

Mortgage which is about 140k, loan for kitchen which is about £5k (interest free so no point in paying it off in a lump sum) and a DFS sofa - I have no idea what is left in that but £35 a month over 4 years, must be 2 years left!

MajorMujer · 18/02/2021 07:35

None now. Mortgage paid off.
In the last 20 years bathe highest other debt was £3,500 on credit cards and £2000 overdraft. Was able to clear over minimum payment on credit cards ( MSE website helped) & redundancy cleared my OD.
No credit at all now.

yoyo1234 · 18/02/2021 07:35

Student loans and mortgage debt circa £200000 in this household. Scary to see how much.

cariadlet · 18/02/2021 07:36

None. Mortgage is paid off, credit card is always paid off in full every month, have never had a loan or chosen the buy now and pay later option, went to uni in the 80 s so no tuition fees and no student loan.

ItWasntMyFault · 18/02/2021 07:38

Just the mortgage which has about 4 years left.

Bouncebacker · 18/02/2021 07:38

Mortgage with about £350k left to go, car about 9K but that payment is due in May and we have it saved (CCP three year deal and we have decided to buy it outright), CC paid off in full every month, paid off student loan with a bonus about 10 years ago - it didn’t make financial sense to do that(could technically have made more in interest in savings than the interest I was paying but the piece of mind was very important for me.)

MarinPrime · 18/02/2021 07:40

none

Prufrocks · 18/02/2021 07:41

I’ve never had a mortgage and can only aspire to one day be in so much debt.

I’m still paying for my sofa but it’s earned it’s keep this past year.

DinosaurDiana · 18/02/2021 07:43

None.
Mortgage is gone, and I never have had credit cards. If I can’t afford it, I don’t have it.

biibbiibobby · 18/02/2021 07:44

None. No mortgage left either.

Upupupintheair · 18/02/2021 07:44

Huge mortgage but manageable
Around £9k of debt (loans from family) which we’re paying off a grand a month so we’ll on track (it was £15k)
My student loan. I don’t see that as debt though.

ilovebagpuss · 18/02/2021 07:45

Mortgage 160k
Cards 6k some was for finishing a loft conversion
Plenty of equity in house and we live in a ever popular area so I sort mentally see that as back up even though I can’t access it.

Pyewhacket · 18/02/2021 07:46

Zero. Both me and DH worked abroad for a number of years when we graduated. That gave us enough money to buy our house outright. Neither is us have credit cards and I still drive my old Land Rover County. Only real expense is my 16dd private school fees but as we both work FT we can cover those altho it’s not cheap.

RaspberryCoulis · 18/02/2021 07:47

Only the mortgage and it's about three quarters paid off.

Lemonsyellow · 18/02/2021 07:47

None. The only debt I’ve ever had is a a mortgage, and that’s paid off - unless you count a credit card, and that is paid off in full every month. I’ve never had any other loans.

Karmatime · 18/02/2021 07:49

Just mortgage, about £100k and 11 years left, I’m hoping to be able to overpay and get it cleared sooner. I only use my credit card for flights so that’s clear!

notacooldad · 18/02/2021 07:52

No mortgage
No loans
No overdraft
I used my credit card yesterday and spent £78 so I'll transfer money kver this morning to pay for it.
As many bills as I can are paid in full rather than DD eg water tv licence, house and contents insurance, car insurance.

Wondering how much debt the average person is in.. Including mortgage, loans, credit cards, overdraft

If you want to find out about the average person's debt, you need to ask average people, which as you will have found, are in short supply on Mumsnet. Smile.

When you say you owe money on credit cards, do you mean you use them for day to day expenses and pay off the balance each month, or you're paying interest on them? If that's the case it makes no sense

The person who has credit card debt, but far larger savings is probably someone who borrows at 0% and then saves the money at a higher rate. It's far less lucrative than it used to be, but you can borrow thousands of pounds at 0% and no fee for a year or two (and sometimes they throw in freebies like Amazon vouchers or other cashlike rewards on top).

You then put the money in an interest paying account until the end of the 0% period, and the profit is yours. I used to make hundreds of pounds a year doing this, others far more.

Caramel81 · 18/02/2021 07:52

Just the mortgage and we have around 65k left on it.
I only spend a small amount on my credit card each month which is always paid off and I’ve got no overdraft or loans.
I’m in my 30s now but in my 20s I had awful debt which take years to sort out so I’m very careful now

Worried830410 · 18/02/2021 07:52

Zero. Both me and DH worked abroad for a number of years when we graduated. That gave us enough money to buy our house outright

That's exactly what we did.
Cars and home paid off. Our only biggish expense is private school fees.
We are big savers as well.

Spidey66 · 18/02/2021 07:52

Couple of hundred on my credit card, which I intend to clear nex t week on payday. Nil else-mortgage cleared.

Fullofthejoysofspring · 18/02/2021 07:53

Only mortgage debt. Credit card paid off in full every month.

MrsJackRackham · 18/02/2021 07:54

OP I think this will go the same way as a 'how much do you drink' thread. Many posters proud (quite rightly so) to say they don't have any debt or mortgage and the vast majority of us, who represent 'normal' people, sit staring at the screen thinking 'fuck I must be different/ wrong/ bad'.
No one in my immediate friends' circle is mortgage free or debt free and we're all professional/ middle management types.
I have £100k mortgage over two properties (bought my siblings out of inherited family home) £2k in cc and HP payments for a car. New couch coming next month which is interest free.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 18/02/2021 07:55

Zero, but about to become -about £150,000 due to moving.
