To think celebrities punching above their weight is a bit harsh?

I was chatting with a friend today and she mentioned how many celebrities are punching above their weight with their partners.

Jay Z and Beyonce
Jessie J when she was with Channing Tatum

AIBU to think this way of thinking is a bit harsh? I'd be devastated if someone thought myself or my partner were punching above their weight. Seems a horrible way of thinking...

Did you tell your friend this?

LizBennet · 17/02/2021 22:00

It is true though, just like in real life 🤷‍♀️ Some people are better looking than their partner.

WorraLiberty · 17/02/2021 22:03

Jessie J when she was with Channing Tatum

Which one's supposed to be punching above their weight there?

Genuine question

Shitfuckcommaetc · 17/02/2021 22:06

Jessie J?
That woman is bloody gorgeous!

tessiegirl · 17/02/2021 22:15

Yeah Jessie J apparently Hmm

I told friend I disagreed but must have gone a bit quiet as the subject was changed.

It's funny but it's been playing on my mind this evening so thought I would vent on here!

It’s not nice, but then I’m sure Beyoncé and Jay Z are too busy enjoying their millions to care what others think!

Labobo · 17/02/2021 22:16

I was about to ask the same question about Jessie J. It wouldn't be possible for her to punch above her weight. She is stunning and talented.

BorderlineHappy · 17/02/2021 22:19

I think in your examples it's true .
Channing and Jay Z certainly are.
It might be harsh but it's true.

AndPatraWillNeverSayNever · 17/02/2021 22:21

Yes 'all the ones deemed ugly to one side and form your own nation of lovers. The ones deemed beautiful to another side. You must not mingle with each other'.

Just people making stupid observations. Idle chit chat, that sort of thing.

Fwiw, JayZ may be "punching above his weight" in terms of beauty but Beyonce was definitely "punching above her weight" in terms of status, at least when they met.

goldielockdown2 · 17/02/2021 22:22

Oh god she was only having a natter with you, it's not like she DMed these people on IG to let them know her opinion! You however have put this on the internet now so you're worse if that's your line of thinking 🤷‍♀️

AndPatraWillNeverSayNever · 17/02/2021 22:22

That was losers, not lovers.

Sittingonabench · 17/02/2021 22:59

Attraction is so subjective judgements can’t really be made. I’ve heard comments like this before but it’s always from someone who doesn’t know you and has no idea about what each partner brings to a relationship or what each partner finds attractive. It’s a shame on a global scale as it shows the ingrained stereotypes and judgements are alive and kicking (he’s just with her for her looks, she’s just with him for his money type thing) but on an individual level I expect it just flows off people as a nonsense.

Tana433 · 17/02/2021 23:23

Yes, i think its a horrible thing to think/say. Neither myself or my OH would be deemed especially attractive but i would be devastated if i thought anyone was thinking that one of us was punching. Obviously it would upset me more if they thought it was me who was but still........!

FightingTheFoo · 17/02/2021 23:25

I mean, I was just thinking it today about Christine from Selling Sunset and her husband. We all think it.

And agree with PP it's a bit pathetic that your friend was just trying to have a chat with you - especially when there is pretty much nothing else to talk about except fucking Covid and the weather - and you immediately ran on to here to virtue signal.

AnneWeber · 17/02/2021 23:37

Fair point

I do not see the appeal of Channing

Joe Mangellio though....

grassisjeweled · 18/02/2021 00:38

He looks like a potato

AKissAndASmile · 18/02/2021 00:43

If a man is super-rich and powerful he's not punching above his weight, no matter how beautiful his partner is. Nobody said Anna Nicole Smith's husband was punching even though he was 120 years old or whatever. Women are expected to bring looks to the table and men to bring money/power. This is sexist but exactly how society views it.

Ozgirl75 · 18/02/2021 00:46

I’m friends with a woman who is beautiful; tall, great looking, slim. She’s also funny and nice. I met her husband and he’s a chubby, balding bloke ten years her senior. So on paper, he’s “punching” but the way she talks about him, he’s clearly fun, kind, intelligent and makes her incredibly happy.
Plus he’s a really rich builder (they started the company together so she didn’t marry him for money!).
Looks are pretty unimportant really, plus if you’re in it for the long run, looks of both parties will fade.
