Good or bad idea and reasons for your opinion?
I don’t feel strongly either way but I am curious about what aspects of becoming a Republic are more beneficial than the UK’s stable current system.

@Lookingforwardto2021

"Would you be sympathetic of a similar argument made by, say Saudi Arabia, for not modernising?'

What in the name of sweet reason has that got to do with the monarchy in UK ?

It is the complexity argument made by the traditionalists - we cant have change because it is complex.

Most progressive movements are accompanied by upheaval. It is not easy, true. But that’s not a reason to stay stuck in a seemingly feudal mindset that values birth over merit in its highest institutions

Roussette · 19/02/2021 19:21

Personally I’d be very happy to see it pared back to a Scandinavian model and I expect to see that in my lifetime

Agree totally although I'm probably older than you but I live in hope

turquoisewaters · 19/02/2021 19:24

William and Kate are very likeable. He will grow into the role in time. Kate appears to very respectful of the institution and protocol and seems to be trying to do a good job, not being oppositional or defiant.

They will appeal to the younger generations as well

Brace yourself folks, the grammar police are working this thread !! Get your syntax in order and your etymology polished up !

Otherwise it's the naughty step for all of us ![/quote]
Yeah good one Anita

Hate to educate you further but I actually corrected your spelling, your grammar is ok so far

PersimmonTree · 19/02/2021 19:25

@DGRossetti

Track and trace fiasco snd the Tory mafia is a completely separate issue. People drawing very wonky parallels again.

Not really. If people are happy to piss £22 billion away on something that failed to a mate of the PM, they'll happily accept a few million missing when we dump the Monarchy, assuming posters claiming they make money are correct.

I don't follow you. People aren't happy to piss billions away on corruption, waste and incompetence in the government. I think people feel powerless and afraid of change.
Roussette · 19/02/2021 19:27

I really think not. Not going by my adult DCs and all their friends anyway.

Of course, they both fit the mould perfectly but not sure I could call either of them 'likeable'

The younger generation feel very differently to the older generation(s)

Bangable · 19/02/2021 19:27

@KeflavikAirport

Anita appears to be reading this thread in a mirror she’s got things so arse-backwards.
Yep
TipseyTorvey · 19/02/2021 19:34

I don't think William and Kate are very likeable or relatable actually. He comes across as a snob. She comes across as a compliant opinion free anti feminist mannequin to me. Lovely hair. Lovely smile, but goodness me in 2021 can we not have a woman with a strong view and opinion?

AnitaB888 · 19/02/2021 19:36

Do I get an A for that then, Miss?

And there you have Meghan...

I haven’t seen much outrage. And definitely not nearly as much as I hoped for. The incontinent profligacy of the last year seems to have gone virtually unnoticed. Johnson appears to have a printing press working non stop in the Royal Mint but nobody seems to care.

I don’t think that is going to happen. The way Andrew was and is protected is probably the last nail in the coffin. They really should have given him up as it only highlighted how pervert the whole system is. @VinylDetective How can you respect a system that protected and promoted someone like him for decades? How is is it one rule for them and another for the rest of us?

You know why people are letting the government off the hook? Because it's a Tory Government and people think they are ' doing ok' and forgetting the bad things. Short term memory loss , sadly. If this was a Labour government giving 'back handers 'to people the press would hate it and keep on about it too. Nobody is holding them to account.
Roussette · 19/02/2021 20:07

80s totally agree

And there you had Diana....................

Diana's gone so it's really good to know her legacy is carried on with Meghan

dons hard hat

Redrunbluerun · 19/02/2021 20:10

I’m not a huge fan anymore, BUT they are a net benefit for us.
Political soft power and tourism being 2 and there are more... so as long as it’s just the core (and not the wider family) I don’t mind

VinylDetective · 19/02/2021 20:10

I don’t think the system protected or promoted him. The allegations only emerged relatively recently and he still hasn’t been charged with anything.

I think he’s a vile human being and I wouldn’t want to breath the same air but British and American law work on the presumption of innocent until proved guilty so he’s being treated exactly like the rest of us.

Get Sir Keir Starmer on the job then - especially at PQT

BTW A Labour Leader with a Title isn't that a bit of an embarrassment?

Roussette · 19/02/2021 20:18

LemonSwan · 19/02/2021 20:18

I used to be really anti royal when younger but recently have seen their value as a diplomatic tool. I think its a really useful stealth way to keep communication and relationships with counties open which the government of the time could not condone. Some dont like this idea of being amicable to your 'enemies' or despicable people but at the end of the day peace and progress is never made through conflict.

This ONLY works if they are 100% non biased, non political, non opinionated people. The queen seems to understand this however I am not sure if the rest of them do (H&M, Charles etc.). I dont see Wills and Kate expressing political opinions too much so it might continue to serve a purpose but I am not sure.

Well of course you haven't seen much outrage. We're in lockdown. I think there is inrage instead.

But I agree with you, it's disappointing, the way people are so passive.

Round at my house though, there's daily outrage, at these lying incompetent arseholes that people only voted for because the other lot were useless as well. Massive, sweeping political reform is needed in the UK, but it seems most people can't cope with that and won't step into their own power by telling the cheats and liars NO.

Lookingforwardto2021 · 19/02/2021 20:27

“This ONLY works if they are 100% non biased, non political, non opinionated people.“. In reality none of the RF are. They have massive hidden wealth and if it is, for example, part invested in oil, they won’t act against those interests.

And there you have the reason why neither of them were a ‘good fit’ for the Royal Family, whose function is primarily diplomacy. That function should not be underestimated, particularly concerning international relations.
