Good or bad idea and reasons for your opinion?
I don’t feel strongly either way but I am curious about what aspects of becoming a Republic are more beneficial than the UK’s stable current system.

I used to think they had some constitutional purpose, but since the proroguing of parliament, realised they were pointless.

It also came to light that the Queen did intervene historically when it came to laws covering up her wealth (reported in the Guardian.) That and Prince Andrew has put me right off them and I think the Queen should be the last one, after she dies we should abolish the Monarchy.

AndPatraWillNeverSayNever · 17/02/2021 13:09

Without the BRF's appeal, I'm not sure the UK has any other selling point. They'll just be another random country really so I can understand why some people don't want to lose this.

I'm definitely against the many homes they own (Where are those who hate people with second homes?) and the hundreds of empty mould-infested rooms they hoard. They're outdated and glorified celebs.

Fair enough Charles and his siblings, William and his cousins have been groomed for this all their lives so not sure what else they can do at this point but I think they should stop there. The current generation (W&K's kids and other great grandchildren) shouldn't be groomed to "take over" anything anymore.

yoyo1234 · 17/02/2021 13:10

I hate the traveling they did during this pandemic.

MsMiaWallace · 17/02/2021 13:13

Has William had affairs??

I'd never heard this!!

@CoronaIsWatching

Prince Andrew is just what they're all like behind the PR spin

Prince Harry and no loyalty to the monarchy or the country in the end

Prince William having affairs left right and centre, all covered up

Prince Charles and Camilla both vile in their treatment of Diana (what The Crown and see for yourself)

Only one I like is Kate Middleton but she's not even a blood royal

I vote to abolish it, so people like the above stop using human beings as their own personal soap opera. Imagine watching The Crown and treating it like fact!

As for Prince Harry, I swear the next sad-act I see moaning that a man in his thirties decided he didn't want to be part of the family business anymore, I'm just going to scream. Who the f caaarrreeess that he left for another country with his wife? If my life partner was being treated so abhorrently by an entire country, I'd leave as well!

DuckonaBike · 17/02/2021 13:16

Agree, we should get rid of them. They just seem like pointless celebrities.

I also have a brilliant idea (though I say it myself) about how we should mange the transition: Prince William should stand for election as President. He would probably win and could be in the role for 5 years or whatever, and then we could have another election and someone else could take over, and by then we would have got used to the idea of having an elected head of state instead of a monarch.

Gooseysgirl · 17/02/2021 13:17

I'm all for abolishing the monarchy, I do think it'll happen eventually.

LizBennet · 17/02/2021 13:17

Pre watching The Crown I would have said keep the monarchy, I loved the tradition of it all.

After watching it, I say orf with their heads.

Chloemol · 17/02/2021 13:18

Not abolish, they have a purpose, head of commonwealth, bring in tourists etc

It’s a far better system than a republic. Would you be happy for President Blair?, Cameron or Johnston, all of whom would stand for the role

I certainly don’t want a President Macron or Trump, that enough is a reason to keep our system

BrumBoo · 17/02/2021 13:18

@MsMiaWallace

I'd never heard this!!

Has there ever been a royal of male sex that hasn't had an affair? Maybe Edward.....

I hated the start of this but you won me over by the end 😂 it's actually pretty good.

lunapeace · 17/02/2021 13:20

There really is no point to them in this day and age is there? It actually makes my head spin.

AndPatraWillNeverSayNever · 17/02/2021 13:20

I don't think Prince Harry owes anyone loyalty, especially if he feels they've done him or his family wrong, which they have. I'd expect that of anyone. Like the saying goes on MN, He 'LTB'! Great call.

BabyYoda · 17/02/2021 13:22

I definitely think they should be abolished.
I didn’t vote for ‘em.

PuppyMonkey · 17/02/2021 13:22

Bin them all. The whole notion of “royalty” is outdated and offensive nonsense.

BlueTimes · 17/02/2021 13:24

I would vote to abolish. As soon as you get any of the royal family away from their PR, you realise how awful and entitled they are. Perhaps some, that are still behind their PR are nice people, but I don’t think I could be convinced to support them now.

As much as I dislike and disagree with many political leaders, at least they are democratically voted in (here, at any rate) and it’s not a lifelong commitment.

WannabemoreWeaver · 17/02/2021 13:24

I am more and more in favour of abolishing them. As far as I can see they cost a lot of money, which could be spent on the people of this country, and take far more than they give. Like the state paying for repairs to their personal living spaces which are not open to the public. Paying for expensive weddings. etc etc. It seems that they feel it is their right to take this money and to block or meddle with any legislation which may affect this, (Charles in particular has all the income from the Duchy of Cornwall and is famous for not paying for anything himself if he can avoid it). They represent family values but we know that is a major act and there are all kinds of things going on behind the facade. And they are used as a major distraction from the actual problems of this country - trot out a wedding or baby and this becomes the focus of the news that day. And they represent the pinnacle of a class system which is still massively impactful on your chances in this country. I dont think it will ever happen, but I would vote for them to go.

BlueTimes · 17/02/2021 13:24

But The Crown is largely sensationalised fiction! 🤦🏻‍♀️
HermioneWeasley · 17/02/2021 13:25

Abolish. It’s outdated and obscene.

Re tourism - France is the most visited country in the world. We can still have pagentry and open up the castles and palaces without the monarchy sitting in them.

CoronaIsWatching · 17/02/2021 13:26

But The Crown is largely sensationalised fiction!

Name one event portrayed in The Crown that didn't happen

AndPatraWillNeverSayNever · 17/02/2021 13:27

Not that I believe a TV show to be an accurate depiction but behind all the well-crafted PR image, I won't be surprised they're really like this or worse.

LizBennet · 17/02/2021 13:27

But The Crown is largely sensationalised fiction!

Umm yes, I’ve watched it...

I meant it made me realise they serve pretty much no function, not because of their actions depicted in a drama.

Livingtothefull · 17/02/2021 13:28

'The Queen and Prince Charles have both meddled in politics to suit their own needs'.

True. But when it could potentially be beneficial for her to 'meddle' (eg illegal prorogation of Parliament) they are as much use of a chocolate teapot.

This is contrary to what the monarchy's supporters assure us is their role. From the British Monarchist League: (the Queen) acts as a checks and balances system to protect her people from an unjust and oppressive Parliament' - not many checks and balances in practice I am afraid.

josieorange · 17/02/2021 13:28

Prince Harry grew up with so much speculation about whether his father was someone else, his mum was hounded to death being chased by the press, and then the press and much of the country was racist towards his wife. Too right he left the country, he's the only sensible one out of the lot of them.
