Good or bad idea and reasons for your opinion?
I don’t feel strongly either way but I am curious about what aspects of becoming a Republic are more beneficial than the UK’s stable current system.

According to the court circular William spoke to eight health workers on the phone in one morning in 2019. That is eight separate engagements right there. Wow, he is properly run off his feet. I bet the chats were totally enlightening and not at all a waste of time for the lucky health workers.

they may give patronage but others do the actual work

And even the patronages have been shown to have little to no impact on charitable donations.

How would we know? It’s not like those charities don’t have royal patronage in a parallel universe so we can make a comparison.

I am on the fence with all of it but I don't think anyone can pretend they work hard day in day out. I mean.... really not.
Everything is prepared for them, they never have to think... hang on how will I get across London to get from A to B in time for this meeting or that meeting, then go back into the office then do a 2 hour commute home.
They don't have to think about travel, traffic, food in the house, childcare, laundry, evening meal, homework, shopping etc

They have someone to wait on their every single whim and get them from A to B, no pressures, no stresses. They just have to turn up. Now I know the likes of some of them will mean they will have read bullet points (all prepared for them) for where they are visiting so they can look reasonably intelligent when they get to where they're going, but really.... they don't have to use their brains that much or worry about anything.
It is all done for them every day.

So no one can say they work hard. It might seem like it to them but it's not proper hard work at all.

AllTheWayFromLondonDAMN · 18/02/2021 21:42

Get rid. There’s no logical reason to keep it going. Do I think that the Queen is probably a decent and hardworking woman? Yes I do. But I’m fairly sure that’s luck and I’m not sure that the heirs are/will be and that’s hardly a shock. One of the great embarrassments of our nation is that we still have a monarchy and that they have to sign off all of our laws. I’d like to hope that my grandchildren won’t be subjugated in the same way that we are.

KeflavikAirport · 18/02/2021 21:44

Data scientists have looked into the impact of royal patronage. I will dig out the link.

Roussette · 18/02/2021 21:46

Oh and most importantly... they will be the ones to choose when they actually do visit or hold a zoom call. If they don't fancy doing anything at all one week, they can choose not to. The flexibility for pleasing themselves is enormous.

I think royal patronages do help unless your name is Andrew but I would imagine with some of the charities it might be a once a year catch up and little else.

turquoisewaters · 18/02/2021 21:46

So are all the big houses, castles, hundreds of acres of land, Duchies (Cornwall), security, staff, and all the rest actually paid for from the taxpayer

The Monarchy generates ample revenue for the UK, so they likely more than pay for themselves

Dee1975 · 18/02/2021 21:47

You can abolish them, but they will still have their own wealth. And instead people will continue to idolise intsagram stars who really do do f all for a living.

KeflavikAirport · 18/02/2021 21:47

74% don’t hear a squeak from their royal patron from one year to the next according to that link

KeflavikAirport · 18/02/2021 21:48

Are Instagram stars leeching off taxpayers who have no say in the matter?

LolaSmiles · 18/02/2021 21:50

I'm not bothered either way on the royals. Even if they were abolished then they'd still be privately wealthy. I also like the principle of having experts in the House of Lords, but think there should be a set of criteria regarding expertise inappropriate field, not some career politician parachuted in for being a good party boy who does as he's told.

CathyorClaire · 18/02/2021 21:50

@veeeeh

This is very interesting for me, a non native UK person.

So are all the big houses, castles, hundreds of acres of land, Duchies (Cornwall), security, staff, and all the rest actually paid for from the taxpayer?

I am gobsmacked! But am sure someone will tell me that the tourism aspect and the home made organic jam from Cornwall sustains them. lol.

Cannot believe that this institution is so wealthy, and yet so lazy apart from Her Maj. But even she should see what is going on.

The Duchies escaped being incorporated into the Crown Estate by an unknown historical anomaly. The income is now manipulated to the personal benefit of the Queen and POW in the way that benefits their wallets best.

Charles disposed of the Duchy Originals label to Waitrose when it started making a loss.

LolaSmiles · 18/02/2021 21:51

^expertise in appropriate fields.

The missing space made for an interesting alternative meaning Blush

Their diaries are booked six months ahead, they can’t just decide they can’t be arsed and not turn up.
veeeeh · 18/02/2021 21:51

You are being hoodwinked. But if you don't mind that, so be it.

Just had a quick look at other monarchical countries in Europe (daren't say EU lol) and they are all quite ordinary from what I can see. Well they are privileged but not to the extent that your own lot are.(That Spanish fella is a bit of an outlier though, have to admit lol)

You in UK seem to be very happy to support a lazy family. Bet they never have to order their goods online like we have to in Covid times.
Off you go Jeeves.

KeflavikAirport · 18/02/2021 21:54

Christ the monarchists on here really are champion point missers. I have never seen the like.

Anywhere I can see proof of that, thanks.

Really? I bet you they can pull out and re-arrange just like that. I'm sure they wouldn't be so rude as to stand anyone up though, agreed!

KeflavikAirport · 18/02/2021 21:56

You can see figures favourable to the royals on their own website, or a more critical approach to the royal finances on the Republic website.

CathyorClaire · 18/02/2021 21:57

www.thirdsector.co.uk/royal-patronages-provide-no-discernible-benefits-charities-research-concludes/communications/article/1689654

From above:

A report by the charity consultancy Giving Evidence – funded by the Belgian Red Cross – found that 74 per cent of charities with royal patrons did not receive any public engagements over the last year, and there was no evidence that royal patrons increase a charity’s revenue, or generosity more broadly

KeflavikAirport · 18/02/2021 21:57

They can easily arrange eight “royal engagement “ phone chats for a Tuesday morning and then take the rest of the week off 👍

Roussette · 18/02/2021 21:59

Yes, the European Royals are more frugal and streamlined than ours, that's for sure.
We have been force fed this diet of Royalty all our lives, we are brainwashed. I know without doubt they are not going anywhere, but my god I hope Charles has enough backbone to really reform and change and boot out all the extended family.

If they didn't have all the estates by descent I suppose, would they be able to pay for themselves?

It is all blx to me, and it seems now that the younger versions don't give a shit anymore. Gilded cages, rules and regs, paparazzi, tittle tattle, every move looked at. They are welcome to it.
