Been done for speeding... twice (does anyone know about the speed awareness course?)

I know I'm an absolute twat and feel free to tell me that.

I was caught speeding on the 3rd and again on the 9th in the same place. Both letters came this morning. Going to post the forms off tomorrow and wait to hear back and hopefully I will be offered the course as an alternative to taking 6 points. I was hoping I could take the course for the first fine and then only have to take 3 points but I'm not sure how it works.

I've googled it and it saids you should be eligible as long as you haven't been caught in the last 3 years. I was only slightly over the limit (not that it makes it right)

How does it work if you've been caught twice so close together ?

There was another thread on here a month or so back, exact same scenario.
Let me see if I can find it.

Sorry, no help on your query, I am captain sensible when it comes to speed.

Morningcoffeeeee · 16/02/2021 22:53

@NiceTwin that would be really helpful , thank you Smile

Embarrassingly, I have also been caught speeding twice. And have done the speed awareness training twice...
Both were excellent. The first one was in person, the second over Zoom (4 years apart).
I don't know what happens if you are caught twice in quick succession. I wouldn't expect them to roll the two offences into one course. Maybe you could pay the fine and take the points for one, and be allowed to do the course for the other?
A friend was one caught twice on the same DAY, going to and coming home from work. It took him to 9 points and was the shock to the system he needed.

SnarkyBag · 16/02/2021 22:56

I also got caught speeding twice in the same week. Was able to do the awareness course for one and had points for the other 😳

You may get a course for the first but you won't for the second.

So if a human doesn't see if 1 course 3 points and the fine.

If a human sees it expect 6 points and fine

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 16/02/2021 22:59

Same here, twice in a month, but different force areas. Got the course for one, points for one.
I'm a cop. Blush Blush Blush V embarrassing telling my sarge.
(Never been pinged since though!)

Sapho47 · 16/02/2021 22:59

Oh it also depends where and how much you were speeding

"Not everyone who speeds will be offered to go on the course. You’ll only be offered the course if:

You haven't been convicted for any other speeding offences in the past three years
You've been caught driving over 10% plus 2mph of the limit, but below 10% plus 9mph.
For example, in a 30mph zone, this means anything between 35mph and 42mph, and in a 70mph zone it means anything between 79mph and 86mph

In any other circumstances you'll receive a fixed penalty notice and a minimum of three points on your licence. For serious speeding offences, 10% plus 9mph over the limit, you’ve every chance of being taken to court."

Morningcoffeeeee · 16/02/2021 23:01

Thanks for all the replies. Yes I wasn't expecting a course for both fines. I thought I would be offered the course for one and points for the other but wasn't sure with them being so close together. It doesn't say anything about this type of situation on the website Blush

@SnarkyBag I'm hoping this is what will happen 🤞

@DontBuyANewMumCashmere same situation with my auntie, she is also a police officer Blush

Not sure about those guideline speeds as I've done the speed awareness twice - once for doing 88 in a 70 and once for doing 33 in a 30 so both outside of those parameters.
I also have a colleague who got caught doing something like 80 in a 50 and had to do a full day course rather than the half day one.

Morningcoffeeeee · 16/02/2021 23:17

I say slightlyBlush, it was 79 in a 70

OP posts:
Morningcoffeeeee · 16/02/2021 23:17

On both!

Its just off the speed awareness website. It depends if units automated or if it was an officer too.

As if you're not an ass to them the officer will usually put you at the bottom of the bracket

You can do the course for one and you'll get points and a fine for the other.

My nephews 20yr old friend was killed last Feb by a speeding driving going 30 in a 20mph limit. Knocked her from the path (driver mounted the kerb) to the opposite side and smashed her in to a brick wall. 20 years old! You lot all need to think when you are driving. Each one of you potentially could have killed someone

namechangetheworld · 17/02/2021 03:44

Not as close together as yours, but I was caught twice two years. I was offered (and took) the course both times. I rang up to query the second offer, because I had heard about the supposed three year rule, but they told me it was correct. I was doing 36 in a 30 both times, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/02/2021 04:27

Im with Pinkstripeycat on this one.

Caught speeding twice! I don't know about points on your licence, if it were up to me I'd ban from driving for life. I don't think you're fit or safe to be on the roads.

picknmix1984 · 17/02/2021 04:32

@DontBuyANewMumCashmere then you should be ashamed rather than bragging about it! How do we protect our children if even the police don't take it seriously?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/02/2021 04:34

You shouldn't be a cop either @DontBuyANewMumCashmere. If you can't lead by example.

GreenSlide · 17/02/2021 04:46

I was caught doing 37 in a 30 and had to do the speed awareness course. I wasn't paying attention to me speed. It cost £90 at the time which stung a bit but I have to say it was excellent and I think about it all the time when I'm out driving. What stuck with me was when they said do you like people speeding past your house? Then why do you think you can speed past other people's houses. I pay attention to what speed I'm doing now. Good luck!

I don't speed in 30s but the motorway etc 70 is an absurdly low speed for single direction traffic in a modern car. The limits are outdated and need revisiting.
PassionPeach · 17/02/2021 04:53

Sapho - I disagree with that. Have you seen the state of the drivers on our motorways? The last thing we need is them going faster than our current speed limit (not that everyone pays attention to that, clearly).

If they mounted the pavement then she died from dangerous driving so not the same as this thread.
garlictwist · 17/02/2021 05:45

I've done a speed awareness course and the thing that's stayed with me is the difference in stopping distance between 70 and 80 mph. Yes, 70 mph can feel quite slow on a motorway but it's much safer.
