Been done for speeding... twice (does anyone know about the speed awareness course?)

I know I'm an absolute twat and feel free to tell me that.

I was caught speeding on the 3rd and again on the 9th in the same place. Both letters came this morning. Going to post the forms off tomorrow and wait to hear back and hopefully I will be offered the course as an alternative to taking 6 points. I was hoping I could take the course for the first fine and then only have to take 3 points but I'm not sure how it works.

I've googled it and it saids you should be eligible as long as you haven't been caught in the last 3 years. I was only slightly over the limit (not that it makes it right)

How does it work if you've been caught twice so close together ?

I haven't ever been given a speeding ticket

I know that years ago I read anthea turner got caught like 10 times In a row on one journey on one road speeding and she was cleared of the offence

Did the same camera get you both times op? Is it a new one in the area, I would appeal?

The one speeding bit that really irks me is when people drive above 20 or 30 in an area

When you knock someone over at 20 their chances of survival are much greater

Motorway speeding is less of a danger I think

Spoilsportsday · 17/02/2021 07:08

It was many years ago now that I got two arrive there same time.

Send one before the other so you definitely get offered speed awareness.

Alexindiamondarmour · 17/02/2021 07:17

Our friend was killed last year by a speeding drunk driver, so I find threads like this really offensive and off colour.

OP go and find out yourself or wait for your fine, instead of asking on here like you’re asking about the price of a pint of milk. You were caught speeding twice and flippantly call yourself a twat. Two darling children and a lovely wife are left without their father and husband because of a speeding drunk driver. You should be ashamed of yourself (along with other PPs who have flippantly admitted to it as well). And before you ask, no, I don’t speed and I’ve never had a ticket. I take my responsibility behind the wheel of a car seriously. Suggest you do the same.

Morningcoffeeeee · 17/02/2021 07:55

@Alexindiamondarmour if you had read my original post, I explained that I'd tried to find out via their website but it doesn't say anything about this type of situation, hence why I decided to ask on here

If you get the opportunity to do a course, then do otZ I did it about 15 years ago, and it was excellent. Totally changed my mindset to driving. It was a full day, hand a day in the classroom, half a day of driving with a police driving instructor. I know that they don’t do the driving anymore in most places, even pre Covid, but it has really stayed with me.

Elai1978 · 17/02/2021 09:09

Should be able to get course for one and points for the other, don’t sweat it. I understand the courses done over zoom are shorter than the face to face ones so that’s a bonus.

TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe · 17/02/2021 09:24

Don't worry too much about it, speeding is a minor offence at most, especially when we're talking about 10%+3mph over the limit.

People shouldn't confuse straightforward speeding with speeding while drunk or speeding and mounting the pavement. Those are much more serious offences. That's why with speeding you'll just get a fine and points, and the other offences could lead to prison sentences.

It's like saying someone who is caught passed out in the street due to drinking too much is in the same league as someone who got pissed and beat a stranger up before smashing up a parade of shops. Both might attract the attention of the police, but the latter offender will be in a lot more trouble.

Alexindiamondarmour · 17/02/2021 09:35

Wait for your fine then OP. And don’t be so flippant about it.

Morningcoffeeeee · 17/02/2021 09:51

@Alexindiamondarmour I can't see anywhere where I've been flippant about it. Already said I was wrong and stupid for doing so.

Drag goes up as square of speed. Anyone who thinks the national limit should be raised had better not be babbling on about climate change or letting their children truant on Fridays.

And yes, fucking pay attention when driving.

SnarkyBag · 17/02/2021 09:55

@Alexindiamondarmour

I don’t think the OP was being flippant and she wasn’t drunk so a bit shitty to compare her to a drunk driver. I say that as someone who lost 3 family members in a car accident involving a drunk driver who was doing 100 in a 60 zone
Alexindiamondarmour · 17/02/2021 09:57

I said a speeding drunk driver - anyway, there’s no talking sense into some people so I’ll bow out now. Have fun on your course OP, hopefully you learn something.

MrsWooster · 17/02/2021 10:02

Conflating 33 in a 30 or any 10% plus 2 offence, with drunken speeding or dangerous driving, diminishes the latter.

Shoppingwithmother · 17/02/2021 10:11

The OP wasn’t drunk though. Drink driving is not on the same planet of offences as driving a small percentage over the speed limit when you are completely sober. There’s no need to equate the OP or others to murdering drunk drivers.

I did a speed awareness course a couple of years ago and there was a man on it who was caught twice on the same day. He was, as others have said, doing the course for one offence and had 3 points for the other offence.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 17/02/2021 10:55

You can only do one speed awareness course within a 3 year period.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 17/02/2021 10:56

So yes, as a previous poster stated, a course for one and 3 points for the other most likely.

MrsWooster · 17/02/2021 11:13

I also want to add that I went on a speed awareness course (33 in a 30, to formally declare my interest in the matter!) and it was brilliant albeit a bit cringy in a corporate icebreaker sort of way and I am a much better driver as a result of it. And more annoying to dp, who’s got a nasty tendency to aggressivemaledriveritis

VeganVeal · 17/02/2021 11:13

@ButtonMoonPie

Not sure about those guideline speeds as I've done the speed awareness twice - once for doing 88 in a 70 and once for doing 33 in a 30 so both outside of those parameters. I also have a colleague who got caught doing something like 80 in a 50 and had to do a full day course rather than the half day one.
Anything over 76 in a 50 is dealt with by the court, so maybe a course was part of the sentence but they would have also faced a big fine - if recent up to 150% of weekly wage, and 6 points or banned for up to 56 days.
VeganVeal · 17/02/2021 11:15

@Morningcoffeeeee, what speeds were you doing? This depends if you can take a course or not

SnotsandSniffles · 17/02/2021 11:32

I can sympathise with minor slips such as mistaking a 30 zone for a 20 or a few mph over the limit if not watching your speed or going downhill for example .

But speeds of 80mph + ?! We don’t have any roads with that kind of limit.

Morningcoffeeeee · 17/02/2021 11:37

@VeganVeal 79 in a 70 on both. It is downhill on a dual carriageway

OP posts:
Mumofsend · 17/02/2021 11:42

80 is a fairly standard on 70mph roads now. Far less dangerous than a twit doing 40/50 on a clear motorway

This with bells on
VeganVeal · 17/02/2021 11:44

@Morningcoffeeeee, you should get offered a course for the one, points for the other.

peak2021 · 17/02/2021 11:46

If you are not offered the course, please accept your points and/or ban with a good grace. You benefit either way from this country being soft on those who drive motor vehicles.
