she hates to use it, describing it as lumpy. it is great for eczema or dry skin, made of blended lemon skin, oats. is very kind and gentle to skin compared to bubbling soaps esp those with artificial fragrances, colours, etc. she was like sobbing with crocodile tears afterwards, should l just let her use the bubbling soaps?

Lemons shouldn't be used on skin, let alone sensitive skin. There are literally hundreds on the market that have been tested and are good for sensitive skin. Making something in the kitchen doesn't really count as good skincare.

LemonRedwood · 16/02/2021 23:10

You're making your daughter who has sensitive skin and eczema use a homemade product that she has told you she hates (probably because the citric acid stings like fuck) and then you say she's sobbing crocodile tears?

Who does that to their child? YABVVU

Mn always recommends oats in the bath.

Don't loads of people use things like oatds, coconut oil, etc

Used to be all the rage, avacado fave or hair masks or whatever.

Magazines used to print " recipes" before they started being about the kardashians , borox who's not wearing make up and how to please your man...

I cant be tbe only one who made stuff? Blush

It really can do if you've done your research and know what you're doing, but in this case I don't think OP has so I agree. Watching YouTube videos from 5 minute crafts doesn't count as research.

myturf · 16/02/2021 23:13

What a weird thing to do - buy her a gentle cream cleanser and some muslin cloths. Stop making her use something that hurts her!

emillie · 16/02/2021 23:14

Lemon is acidic and should never be used on the face.

JillsFlapjacks · 16/02/2021 23:14

I'd really not try lemon on an eczema prone skin. I certainly wouldn't force an 11 year old to use some concoction I'd thought up. You're being entirely unreasonable.

doadeer · 16/02/2021 23:16

Oh my god no! Use a proper Cleanser that's undergone trials and is designed for her skin! Lemon shouldn't be used on her face.

Ask in style and beauty - so many people can advise safe products. She will also need a moisturiser otherwise her skin will be so dry. If i used a Cleanser only I'd feel like my face was going to crack a few mins later.

ellenpartridge · 16/02/2021 23:18

Yabu let her buy something suitable for sensitive skin.

thepeopleversuswork · 16/02/2021 23:20

No. Just no. Why does an 11 year old need cleanser?

And if you impose your ideas about skincare on her she will never listen to you when it actually matters.

Your parenting skills need work. Finish that last assignment on care and compassion.

Those videos are awful aren't they. They make people think they can be Liz Earle with some coconut oil and avocado
Fridainexile · 16/02/2021 23:22

A swipe of something like epaderm followed by a wipe with a warm damp flannel would be better I think , than some weird oaty shit that’ll sting like hell and give her a face like a beetroot.
I sting just thinking of it. Holika holika do a nice very mild cleanser in a kind of egg shape.

HeddaGarbled · 16/02/2021 23:23

Oh for goodness sake - surely you can see there are plenty of options between your two extremes?

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 16/02/2021 23:23

Lemon will further weaken skin barrier on eczema prone skin.

Micellar water seconded. Or Simple or Cetaphil. Or milk or oats.

LaBellySausage · 16/02/2021 23:24

Why not tell your friends she uses lemons and oats sacrificed at the full moon and just hide the shop bought cleanser when they come round.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/02/2021 23:25

Of course you shouldn't force her to use your homemade stuff if she doesn't want to!

Lillyhatesjaz · 16/02/2021 23:27

I personally never use anything other than warm water and a flannel on my face, and I have good skin. Unless she needs to remove makeup just water is best

LemonRedwood · 16/02/2021 23:28

@HoboSexualOnslow And some of them are downright dangerous!

nocoolnamesleft · 16/02/2021 23:29

Lemon on sensitive eczema prone skin? Ouch! Not surprised the poor kid is crying.

Second this.

My skin was awful using all the face washes. Even the sensitive "safe" ones I'll only use once every couple of weeks and tell the kids to do the same.

I looked like shit....

shoesaregood · 16/02/2021 23:32

Is she crying because the lemon stings? Could she use a very gentle balm cleanser (with a soft cloth, not a flannel) Lush superbland might be a good place to start.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/02/2021 23:34

Over the years I have been on MN (many) I have read so many stories from women talking about how their mothers failed to provide them with adequate toiletries, feminine hygiene products, or clothes that they chose, liked or fit them during puberty, and felt the deliberate neglect was due to a resentment of their development. Universally they considered it (with the agreement of others) abuse, not tantamount to abuse, actual abuse.

Stop being abusive OP, your relationship with your child will improve. Can you remember being the same age? Did your mother buy you facewash or make you scrub your face with a lemon and therefore you know no better?

Unbelievable, actually

Your child is being driven to tears by being forced to use some worthy cleanser you've knocked up in your kitchen?

Leave her alone!
