..around their babies necks? Surely its not safe? Why are they fashionable?

The pseudoscience behind it's prevention of benign teething niggles is 100% bullshit, but the choking and strangulation hazard they present is 100% real.

people's risk perception is so fucked up.

Skatastic · 17/02/2021 18:41

Whaaatttttttt. I can hardly sleep for worrying about imaginary things harming my kids, let alone letting them sleep in something that could actually strangle them. Shuddering at the thought.

SqeakyHindge · 17/02/2021 19:35

@Hmm1234

They’re not necklaces. They’re dummy clips which stop them from falling on the floor and picking up germs. Mums can wear them or attach to baby's clothing obviously not when sleeping and they must be safe because reputable brands like Jojo Maman Bebe stock them :)
I remember the big hoo har around those as well few years back, people were making ‘pretty’ beaded ones. Same with dummies covered in glitter sparkle shit.

I was boring had same style dummy clip 2nd time around as did over 20yrs prior.

I can’t read this thread due to the rudeness of some of the comments

Far better for teething pain are silicone teething toys designed for the purpose that aren't strung around their necks!

Put the teething ring/toy in the fridge to help soothe the pain.

Bickie pegs (extra hard finger shaped Rusks) worked wonder for my boys 25yrs ago, my sister and I 50+yrs ago and are still available today. Far less of a cooking hazard too!

Harmonypuss · 17/02/2021 19:40

Choking not cooking .... flipping predictive text

AliceMcK · 17/02/2021 19:42

It’s not a fashion statement. They help sooth babies when teething. The natural amber absorbs into the body through them wearing them. Lots of adults wear amber for the same reason.

I put one on my oldest when she was 6 months old, I saw an immediate difference in her drooling and she seemed calmer. At first I didn’t leave them in all the time but I did eventually. With 2nd DD she was 3 weeks old, she only stopped wearing it because some kid at nursery kept trying to pull it off her. my 3rd DD has had hers from almost from day 1, she’s 3 & a half and has never taken it off.

My DD wasn't impressed by them iirc, but the dog ate them happily so they weren't wasted.

  1. No it doesn't.
  2. Even if it magically did that wouldn't have anything to do with pain relief
Gmom · 17/02/2021 19:45

Admit I haven't read the thread but my sister is a GP and told me 15 years ago never to put any sort of necklace on my baby because she once saw a dead baby in A&E that had strangled herself by getting her wrist caught in a gold necklace she'd been put to sleep wearing. Babies are so beautiful in their pure natural state - no need for jewellery. Lots of other teething cures. Our favourite was a frozen damp flannel.

Ah, have you got some evidence of that to set against the paper linked to upthread?

No?

The trouble is no matter how many times someone says they work there is no evidence at all to show this apart from anecdotal comments. Your children would have all been exactly the same teething wise even without the amber.

I have to say it's actually terrifying so many people have admitted to seeing no risk in leaving their small babies and toddlers sleeping in them.

G5000 · 17/02/2021 19:50

They help sooth babies when teething.

They help to sooth mothers who believe in magic and feel they are doing something.

No Dummy clips are dummy clips Amber necklaces are Amber Necklaces

Since when can human beings absorb amber through their skin? And also magically provide painkilling properties.

I wonder why doctors haven't discovered this amazing miracle cure!

Heartofglass12345 · 17/02/2021 19:52

I don't understand why you would put something around your baby's neck, or those ridiculous headbands, beaded dummy clips or pram charms. Babies aren't fashion statements Hmm
They dont work for teething either

No, the Amber doesn’t absorb into the body, that’s completely impossible And even if it were possible Amber has no painkilling properties whatsoever

You didn't even need to read the whole thread. Just looking at the first page would show a picture, from op, of an Amber teething necklace.

I have to say it's actually terrifying so many people have admitted to seeing no risk in leaving their small babies and toddlers sleeping in them.

Same here, do people not realise babies have died because of this? Or do they just not care that they're putting their child at risk because it looks cute. Confused The thought process is so fucked up.

user1654236589623652 · 17/02/2021 19:57

I can't believe the hospital gave me morphine post-op when they could have just draped me in amber beads. Outrageous.

DappledThings · 17/02/2021 19:58

I wonder why doctors haven't discovered this amazing miracle cure!

They are too busy collaborating with Bill Gates and his evil DNA altering vaccine whilst also hiding the cure for cancer which they have known about or decades. Obviously.

SqeakyHindge · 17/02/2021 20:13

@AliceSprings123 may I ask why you put one of 3rd DD almost from day 1? What was supposed to do

Not going to lie I am Shock

@TheFancyPants

They think the Amber is magical and cures all, when infact it's just the fact it's something solid they are biting down on to releave the pressure on their gums. They could chew on steel/marble/anything hard and it would have the same effect.

It's just a money making scheme to suck in the hipster parents.

Get a biccy peg or put a teething ring in the freezer - Ice cold and hard is best for gum pain. You can also put a spoon in the freezer and gently rub the back along their gums, rub in Ashton and Parson's, sprinkle it on the tongue for colic and tummy ache.

As for the risk of breaking- If you're cutting grapes in half (which we all should do)...you don't want them risking an Amber bead (same size as a grape) in their wind pipe. There are many more ways to soothe gums than risking it for a fashionable moment.

I'm speaking as a Mum of three who fell for all.of the baby self weaning, beads and bottles BS on my first baby.
