@B33Fr33

Because they are woo and believe that a chemical contained in Amber (ridiculously high melting point) will magically transmit itself into their child's blood stream.

They will also tell you that since wearing it their child has potty trained at 6 months, never talks back and is already reading.

But hey. I've got magic cream to sell them.

Well exactly.

Magic cream? Pah
I've got special water that cures all ills. Only £19.99 +p&p.

Anbesol not to be confused with Anusol and paracetamol or ibuprofen are the best thing for teething. Anbesol rubbed on to numb everything for 20-30 mins while the calpol/ibuprofen kicks in and then its all champion after that.

Love51 · 16/02/2021 18:17

@DappledThings

worked like magic for the first one Yes, the placebo effect can seem like magic. It is an amazing thing.
Someone suggested a homeopathic remedy to me. Using placebo effect medication in babies seems really cruel, as don't think the placebo is working on the baby who has no idea what is happening, I think it's working on the adult who bought something from the chemist, so assumes it is in some way evidence based. Although the homeopathic remedy did call for rubbing it in the teeth, which in itself is soothing. Mine had the stuff that numbs your gums, and I tried it on myself!
MrsTerryPratchett · 16/02/2021 18:17

Either they work, in which case you are putting an unmeasured amount of an unregulated painkiller into your baby OR they are bollocks and a strangulation and choking hazard.

But hey, at least your hipster friends who don't understand basic science will think baby Daziel looks cool. Make sure you don't vaccinate either. And use sugar water homeopathic remedies as well. Otherwise you aren't wasting enough money on bullshit.

Love51 · 16/02/2021 18:18

Anbesol, that's the one!

youvegottenminuteslynn · 16/02/2021 18:18

Aren't they dangerous strangulation risk wise?!

Unfucked · 16/02/2021 18:18

Like @DappledThings I found these necklaces provided a handy shortcut to identifying the mothers I wanted to avoid at baby groups.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/02/2021 18:19

They looked cute

Oh well that's ok then, don't worry about this advice from the FDA so long as baby looks cute.Hmm

Hoppinggreen · 16/02/2021 18:20

@AlwaysLatte

Mine had them, they're amber and help with teething.
No, they really don’t Might as well be coal
Same4Walls · 16/02/2021 18:20

I once asked someone whose child was wearing an anklet version and was loudly exclaiming it's virtues if she was worried that she couldn't measure the amount of pain relief being absorbed and she told me no because her babies bodies knew when to stop absorbing it. Confused

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/02/2021 18:21

That's how heroin works too

rorosemary · 16/02/2021 18:23

The hipster moms who use them on their babies don't exactly use them for themselves, so I guess that deep down they know that it's bollocks.

AnnLouiseB · 16/02/2021 18:27

Is the idea that they chew on them to help teething? For them to be long enough to chew surely there’s a strangulation risk?

Hankunamatata · 16/02/2021 18:27

I had amber teething bands but put them on babies ankles with babygrow over the top as was too worried about choking hazard to get necklace.

DappledThings · 16/02/2021 18:28

No, the idea is that the temperature of a child's skin is just right to warm the beads enough to release a natural anaesthetic contained within.

If you have had them too long and you feel they may be becoming less effective you can leave them outside under a full moon and this recharges them.

FACT.

DimidDavilby · 16/02/2021 18:31

@greeneyedlulu

The amber ones are for teething pain I think. Or maybe just wanting to teach pearl clutching early on 🤷‍♀️
😂
BertieBotts · 16/02/2021 18:32

They are for teething. Or for communicating to other parents that you are a bit hippyish and likely to be into AP, slings and so on and won't judge each other for cosleeping or breastfeeding until preschool.

(Tongue in cheek :))

@Countdowntonothing

Hold on, so they are meant to release a constant supply of anaesthetic to babies? Parents I've seen use them keep them on everyday. So parents think constantly drugging the baby is a good idea???? I mean, I know it's all bollocks, but if parents actually believe that shit, they actually believe keeping a baby consistently drugged on painkillers is OK!
Yes pretty much. But don't forget the babies are magical too and their bodies know exactly when to switch on and off the pain relief.

If it makes them sleep 🤷
Fuckadoodledoooo · 16/02/2021 18:37

I don't see how they could possibly work.

Fuckadoodledoooo · 16/02/2021 18:38

And I don't see how anyone else would think they could possibly work. I mean, just think about it.

Ileflottante · 16/02/2021 18:38

@Strokethefurrywall

Teething pain. I had one for each of my boys, worked like magic for the first one, second one didn't have any teething issues generally so not sure if it helped him.

They looked cute, and when they're babies and non mobile, much less likely to snag on anything. Babies didn't even know they were there 🤷🏽‍♀️

If they didn’t know they were there, why bother?
MimiDaisy11 · 16/02/2021 18:40

I assume because they're "natural" they can't harm you. That seems like the rationale they'd use.
