Reporting neighbours for reserving a parking space with cones

YodaBabe · 16/02/2021 10:27

Fully happy to admit I Abu, obviously too much time on my hands.

We live on street where it's all street parking for terraced housing. The couple opposite everyday the lady leaves the house, man runs out with parking cones to save the parking space. They have upgraded to parking cones it used to be the wheelie bins.

Aibu to report them to the council? Parking ban be limited but you can usually park a few houses up or down and most times outside your own home.

It just really riles me and to be honest it's dangerous.

Dh thinks I'm being a busy body

The thing is, even if a disabled bay is installed outside at someone's request, it stilll isn't for their sole use. Anyone with a valid blue badge can legally park there.

Whammyyammy · 16/02/2021 15:49

What sad individuals your neighbours are, move the cones and park there. I would actively go out of my way to park there until they got the message or bought a house with a drive.

Why do people try and save money by not buying a house with off street parking, and then try and claim part of a public highway as their own ???.

Whammyyammy · 16/02/2021 15:55

@notdaddycool

Should only be done for funerals, house moves and when you're waiting for a skip. Maybe short term disability when you can't get a bay put in, long term get a disabled bay if you have a genuine need. There may be the odd other thing, but doing it routinely is CF territory. I've happily parked in conned places even when there are other places available. I'll try and push the cones with the car, but if they get squashed so be it.
I think for funerals, the undertaker provides clearly labelled black cones.
BrightYellowDaffodil · 16/02/2021 16:23

In other news the lady next door has moved the cones closer together so it should good watching a Toyota Prius fitting into a space for a fiat 500

When someone in our street used bins to mark out 'their' space for the billionth time, other people one of whom may have been me parked right up against them so there was room for the cones. They stopped doing it after that Grin

RuledbyASD · 16/02/2021 16:42

@Hairobsessed123

I would leave it there may be a reason ! I have psoriatic arthritis in my hands and yesterday when I came home with a big food shop someone had parked in my spot outside house what they don’t realise it’s a pain literally carrying heavy bags without having the added distance to walk to my house 😞 I won’t ever say anything but if I had the nerve I’d put cones there as well if I didn’t think it wud cause uproar some people are only trying to make their lives easier x
You're bang out of order! You chose that house. You do not own that space! If you have a disability then apply for a blue badge space. You have no idea about other people's circumstances either! You can't be that unfit if you're going to supermarkets rather than having it delivered......

If you want your own personal parking space, then buy/rent a house with a drive!!

HollyGoLoudly1 · 16/02/2021 16:46

Someone where I lived previously attempted to do this, lasted about 2 days before they gave up as everyone else in the street just moved the cones. There wasn't enough space for everyone to park their car directly outside their own house, so it's first come first served I'm afraid!

TitusPullo · 16/02/2021 16:49

@RuledbyASD - I agree, there are a myriad of reasons that someone benefits from having a space near their house. I have a young baby, I also bought a house with a driveway so I didn’t have to lug children and shopping from 2 roads away.

Symbion · 16/02/2021 17:00

@YodaBabe

I don't think I'd actually report but the thought has filled my morning. I'm seriously thinking of taking up crochet so the cones can have little hats.

In other news the lady next door has moved the cones closer together so it should good watching a Toyota Prius fitting into a space for a fiat 500Smile

I know it's petty but that's hilarious Grin
Nith · 16/02/2021 17:02

@TitusPullo

This has reminded me of a road near me that has invented its own parking scheme. They all have little typed cards in their windscreens saying x Road Community Parking Scheme and there are homemade signs zip tied to gates saying permit parking only. It means absolutely nothing. I have no idea how it started but I have a feeling any newcomers are heavily persuaded into joining. Madness.
I wonder what happens if some foolhardy stranger ventures in and parks? Do they get taken off and lynched?
TitusPullo · 16/02/2021 17:17

@Nith - I’ve never had reason to park there (I am normally walking past) but I don’t think I’d be brave enough to try. They all put their bins in the road as well to deter people. The most ridiculous thing is that parking doesn’t seem to be that much of an issue in that road, there is a large designated parking bay that could easily fit 20 or so cars and about 10 houses.

Nith · 16/02/2021 17:20

I just have visions of the mad residents going in for Wicker Man style sacrifices of anyone who dares to flout the power of the zip tied signs.

StoneofDestiny · 16/02/2021 17:20

Move the cones and repeat with as many neighbours joining in as possible or buy a load of cones and cover both sides of the road with them - that will start discussions 😂

TitusPullo · 16/02/2021 17:21

@Nith, if I see smoke coming from that direction I promise to investigate and report back!

Chronicallymothering · 16/02/2021 17:24

I wouldn't be able to resist "borrowing" random cones from elsewhere and gradually under the cover of darkness making a little cone family complete with faces. Eventually a whole village of cones which would fill the whole space. I no longer live in a city which is a good thing - you'd never get away with this in a village

TheSpottedZebra · 16/02/2021 17:39

If you're hesitating stealing 2 cones, maybe just steal one ?

VinylDetective · 16/02/2021 18:08

I'd just park and run over the cones in the process

I tried that once. I ended up with the cone wedged under my car. I looked a complete tit as I struggled to wrench it out as the cone owner laughed at me.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 16/02/2021 18:43

Absolutely, who is to say the person who has dared take 'your' space, @Hairobsessed123, doesn't have a greater need?

MaggieFS · 16/02/2021 18:53

Looking forward to what happens when she gets back, we've been a bit short of parking threads lately.

Londontown12 · 16/02/2021 19:02

@BrightYellowDaffodil
I didn’t say they don’t have a greater need than my own thou that’s why I didn’t say anything to anyone !
It’s just a pain !

Bookwords · 16/02/2021 19:12

I'd try my hardest to park in between the cones, or once I'd parked move them back outside my parking area, like they were always there and I'd never noticed!

BloggersBlog · 16/02/2021 20:10

In other news the lady next door has moved the cones closer together so it should good watching a Toyota Prius fitting into a space for a fiat 500
Do you think your neighbour did it to annoy them, or did they genuinely need the space? Grin either way I would be pottering outside for hours to make sure I didnt miss the latest installment Grin

peak2021 · 16/02/2021 20:25

Have there been reports of "Bread' on Dave or somewhere else?

peak2021 · 16/02/2021 20:26

repeats, sorry

cansu · 16/02/2021 20:29

It depends. If you sometimes can't park on the street and they have saved a space then yes, they are taking the piss and you should move the cones and park there. If there is plenty of space then I wouldn't bother.

VerbenaGirl · 16/02/2021 20:34

One of our neighbours did this for a while, but the Police informed him that it was illegal due to obstructing a public highway and he stopped. I suspect their visit was the result of a 101 call from another neighbour who gets very involved in all things parking.
