Oh god it’s all over Facebook and it’s driving me crazy - “I have here to gift ...a tatty old sofa I can’t be arsed to get rid of myself so I’m fobbing it off on someone else”
or “I have been gifted a bag of baby clothes but they are too small, does anyone know if anyone in need ?”
Or “looking to gift some donations to local women’s refuge/children’s hospital- who do I get in touch with ?”

JUST FUCK OFF !! Say “given” and while we are at it just donate stuff quietly without any fanfare !

YABU - it is perfectly acceptable to use “gifted” as a verb

Or

YANBU - the word “gifted” being used as a verb was invented by Beelzebub himself.

Can I introduce “aesthetic” when the user clearly means beautiful/pretty/looks good but has decided aesthetic sounds better Hmm

See Instagram influencer “look how aesthetic this space is”

NO, just NO.

More Americanisms.

Gifted absolutely is a verb and means something different to given. I only use it at work though (I’m a lawyer).

I’m always intrigued by the problem people have with “Can I get”. I don’t say it myself because I was brought up to say “may I have” but I don’t really understand why people think it implies fetching something yourself. What do you understand by the phrase “what did you get for your birthday?”.

poppycat10 · 15/02/2021 19:32

I hear you OP! It's one of my pet linguistic hates (there are so many more but this is one of the key ones).

You give a present and donate to charity. And gift land if you are rich enough to do so!

Guilty of that one, I'm afraid.
ShiningGonnaShine · 15/02/2021 19:32

I'm an English teacher and also a fan of the whole 'language evolves' thing... I try not to get worked up about things that aren't, by definition, 'right' (apart from when I'm marking students' grammar, obviously).

HOWEVER, I've noticed this new trend of saying things like 'the washing needs hung out', or 'the dog needs walked'. I can't help but find this very irritating.

Musmerian · 15/02/2021 19:33

While my heart is with you the truth is that language is not static and changes all the time. I hate the word relatable and told my students not to use it for a few years but now it’s in academic journals over the place. If we all spoke like people did in the 1930s we’d sound very odd. I find gotten particularly grating and think of it as American but in fact it was in use in the 18th Century and fell out of use. You can’t stem the tide!

Sneachta · 15/02/2021 19:33

100% aghhhhhhhh

AdaFuckingShelby · 15/02/2021 19:34

I have similar feelings about 'I am loving ' instead of 'I love'. As in 'I am loving your outfit'. No you're not, get off!
Also wtf is 'my bad'?.

poppycat10 · 15/02/2021 19:34

@sbhydrogen

If you're lucky you can be gifted a deposit for a house, but otherwise it's 'given'.
Nope if you are lucky enough for someone to give you the deposit money for a house, that's what they do. They don't gift it to you, although as I said above, they might gift you the land for you to build something on.
CarlottaValdez · 15/02/2021 19:36

That’s a new one on me poppy, I don’t think gifted only applies to land.

Thighdentitycrisis · 15/02/2021 19:36

I understand “gifted” to be a legal term that is used to differentiate between something given voluntarily and given in exchange for services, promise of something in future etc.

I mean, to emphasise it is a gift with no strings attached

Could be completely wrong of course Smile

GeorgiaGirl52 · 15/02/2021 19:38

Female dogs are "Spayed" to prevent puppies.
A "spade" is a suit of cards or a tool for moving dirt.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 15/02/2021 19:39

Denominal verbs (using a noun as a verb) have been around for a very long time. Podium as a verb means to place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a competition.

According to this NY Times article www.nytimes.com/2010/02/07/magazine/07FOB-onlanguage-t.html verbs such as docked and surfaced are also denominal verbs.

Lavender2018 · 15/02/2021 19:40

I know it's a regional thing, but it gets on my nerves too.

Pack lunch. It's packed lunch.

GranaryBread47 · 15/02/2021 19:42

I recently sent some baby clothes to a pregnant friend and she posted them on her instagram story with the caption 'Gifted from a friend'. She's a bloody English teacher!

I've noticed the 'gifted' thing come about since advertising laws changed and influencers have to declare ads on their social media posts. They usually say 'gifted' or 'ad' and their idiot followers also seem to think they need to declare that a birthday present was gifted.

My mother is even worse, she says (cringes)...

I need to make a movie

Complete with cutesy voice 🤢

Leodot · 15/02/2021 19:42

I can’t stand it when people write “been” instead of being and “seen” instead of seeing. I seem to read it constantly at the moment and it drives me bonkers! 😖

ILoveShula · 15/02/2021 19:42

Children are gifted. Presents are given.

yesyoudoknowme · 15/02/2021 19:44

'Hunny' or even worse 'hun'. AngryAngryAngry

Worried234 · 15/02/2021 19:45

I absolutely LOATHE the word 'gifted', OP. You're not on your own!

katy1213 · 15/02/2021 19:46

Aaarrgh, can I get ... I always want to say, "It's over there - help yourself."
But podiumed and medalled - what new hell is this? Clattered over the head with a podium??? Like being handbagged but more brutally?
