Oh god it’s all over Facebook and it’s driving me crazy - “I have here to gift ...a tatty old sofa I can’t be arsed to get rid of myself so I’m fobbing it off on someone else”
or “I have been gifted a bag of baby clothes but they are too small, does anyone know if anyone in need ?”
Or “looking to gift some donations to local women’s refuge/children’s hospital- who do I get in touch with ?”

JUST FUCK OFF !! Say “given” and while we are at it just donate stuff quietly without any fanfare !

YABU - it is perfectly acceptable to use “gifted” as a verb

Or

YANBU - the word “gifted” being used as a verb was invented by Beelzebub himself.

@thinkingaboutLangCleg

”Rachael, what were your takeaways from that discussion?”

“Mine’s the fish and chips, but I could see some merit in the kebab too...”

To me, you give someone a present that you bought or made for them, You give away something you no longer want. Therefore "gift" as a verb is unnecessary.

Missushbb · 15/02/2021 20:24

I do hate gentle reminder. What's next, a brutal reminder? 😂

I have gifted yourself a response, OP. You are clearly very impacted by this issue.

@UrAWizHarry

Languages evolve shock.
This ^ Or you’d be saying “Gadzooks! I fear my Lady doth use the English Language with a peasants dialect!”
littlepattilou · 15/02/2021 20:25

'All da feeelz' boils my piss too! Hmm

Also polite notice. As opposed to a rude one?
dementedma · 15/02/2021 20:26

Signage instead of signs
Learnings
Linkage instead of links

Teens who write "imma" instead of I'm going to..

In defence of "can I get" its standard usage in Scotland.

Yourself is really funny Elfie! Grin

Gifted was used as a verb in a plaque at The Montrose Library in 1905. It's been around a lot longer as a verb than most people realise.

It’s GIVEN not GIFTED FFS !!!
littlepattilou · 15/02/2021 20:36

That's interesting @AntsMarching Weirdly, I have no issue with the use of 'gifted' ... like 'I was gifted a clock from work...'

I understand others aren't keen though. Grin

SofiaMichelle · 15/02/2021 20:37

Agree with this point. It's so childish correcting people. Self styled pedants!

Self-styled would work better.

Notgoingouttoday · 15/02/2021 20:38

I totally agree with you. Gifted is an adjective that should only be used to describe exceptional talent.

Don't get me started on the use of English language in legal documents! I could quote many examples of legal documents that are so poorly written they mean the opposite of what the writer intended. I have spent days in court listening to barristers discuss the meaning of a single word used in the wrong context. If only we had a single definitive dictionary available to everyone life would be so much simpler!

LittleBearPad · 15/02/2021 20:38

OP YANBU at all. Keep being right. You aren’t pedantic.

littlepattilou · 15/02/2021 20:39

When I google 'gifted' though, it does come up as 'very talented,' and having exceptional ability etc... I can't find anywhere where it says 'given something...'

lightlypoached · 15/02/2021 20:39

Yes yes yes, what you said. I can't vote as I'm on iPad, but with you.

Frogartist · 15/02/2021 20:39

"Architect designed home"...as if the other ones were just built randomly by without any thought or plan before the building process started!

duckalemon · 15/02/2021 20:41

What was your name

Get I get a skinny cap to go Envy

I brought a new coat

Frogartist · 15/02/2021 20:42

"Takeout" what's wrong with takeaway?
"Surgeries" when you mean operations.

That’s because verbs are listed in the present tense in a dictionary; look up “gift” rather than gifted.
Thehop · 15/02/2021 20:43

Yup. Couldn’t agree more

You’re not gifted, love, you can’t bloody spell

littlepattilou · 15/02/2021 20:43

@IAcceptCookies Thank you. Smile

Indecentobsession · 15/02/2021 20:44

Your/you're - hope your well aaaaaahhhhhh it's hope you're well for ffs!!!

Indecentobsession · 15/02/2021 20:45

Also agree with myself/yourself instead of me or you - people think it makes them sound professional or educated and it does neither

brownet · 15/02/2021 20:46

tbh that happens to me constantly because of predictive text.
