AIBU to argue a tumble dryer is more important than a downstairs toilet

I have a three bed townhouse. Top floor has en-suite,middle floor has a family bathroom and ground floor with a small toilet. I would like to rip this out and replace with a small laundry washing machine, tumble dryer and a pulley maid. My mum thinks I will devalue the house doing this and it will be inconvenient for the kids. I’m looking to move in the next five years but don’t want to be running to the laundrette to dry clothes till then. AIBU

@AlwaysLatte I’ll keep that in mind. The little one likes to splash.

I would give up our downstairs toilet if it was the only way to get a TD in the house but i have teens. Athough i would be concerned about putting future buyers off.

callmeadoctor · 15/02/2021 17:10

Spend the money you would have spent on your tumble dryer by getting your heating looked at if it is so poor? Then a ceiling airer can go anywhere actually (heat rising and all that). I have one and it is amazing. load at night, all dry by the morning. Also save the running costs of a tumble dryer. Airer could go in kitchen (mine is there, doesn't smell as clothes go on overnight) or bathroom over bath if your ceiling is high enough (bear in mind they can be pulled up very high if needed) or downstairs loo.

BigButtons · 15/02/2021 17:11

Deffo keep the toilet. Can'y you just have a washer drier- I could not cope with just one loo and lots in the house- no way.

anniegun · 15/02/2021 17:11

A downstairs loo would be very useful for a toddler. However you could makes the changes whilst leaving the option to re-instate the loo when you sell so its not a big deal.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 15/02/2021 17:11

Washer dryer?

callmeadoctor · 15/02/2021 17:12

Or airer above stairwell where good height.

fastwigglylines · 15/02/2021 17:12

You aren't looking to sell for a number of years and your DC are young now.

So, make your house work for you, not for an imaginary buyer in 5 years. If you want a laundry room, go for it!

Your mum is right that downstairs loos add value. So put one back in before you put it on the market, with just some of the £££ you'll save from not going to the laundrette.

Madness to not do this now, it'll make your life easier, go for it! (And you don't need permission from your mum Wink)

Circumlocutious · 15/02/2021 17:12

I loathe having clothes strewn about all over the place, and place is incredibly limited where I live, so I went for a tumble drier. Yes, over a dishwasher too!

VinylDetective · 15/02/2021 17:12

When we were house hunting we instantly discounted those without a downstairs loo. Condensing tumble dryers can go anywhere.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 15/02/2021 17:12

I don't like downstairs toilets - a lack of privacy & accompanying smell.
I'd chew off my left arm for an outdoors/drying room for boots, coats, dog towels, wetsuits etc.
Haven't had a tumble dryer since I lived with my parents & wouldn't consider one now due to energy use.

katy1213 · 15/02/2021 17:12

I'd kill for a laundry room. And if future buyers don't like it, it's easy enough to rip out and replace with a loo..

Redwinestillfine · 15/02/2021 17:13

Your Mum's right. Especially if you're planning on moving. Get a heated maiden from Lakeland instead.

hedgehogger1 · 15/02/2021 17:13

I don't own a tumble drier. Have no intention of ever getting one. I'd want a downstairs loo though

TitInATrance · 15/02/2021 17:14

Downstairs loo every time. When I bought this house there was a downstairs loo, but it was obstructed by a shelf with the tumble dryer on it.
I made the vendors take the shelf down to prove the loo was working properly. Suited them as a temporary arrangement though.

rorosemary · 15/02/2021 17:16

I'd prefer a downstairs toilet to a secobd floor ensuite.

VinylDetective · 15/02/2021 17:18

@user1471462428

I don’t understand how people sleep if they have an upstairs laundry! I could get rid of the en-suite as I never use it ( have taped up the door so I don’t have to clean it). I do the majority of my washing overnight when the electricity is cheaper I couldn’t sleep with it churning away next door.
Surely doing your washing during the day would be cheaper than going to the laundrette? If you’ve already got an unused space you can use, ripping out another loo sounds like madness.
hartof · 15/02/2021 17:18

Can it not fit both? Mine is quite long so I have my dryer in there too we just got an electrician in to fit a plug as the developer wouldn't put one in. It is useful there's nowhere else I would want to put it.

Zebracat · 15/02/2021 17:20

I did this in my last house and bitterly regretted it. Especially when my child broke their leg, and when it cost us 3 or 4 potential buyers.

GeorgeTheFirst · 15/02/2021 17:20

Wait until you've done the potty training before you make any decisions. Then you'll be able to make an informed decision about how useful a downstairs loo is with young children

Hankunamatata · 15/02/2021 17:21

Friend has her drier in bedroom. She doesnt run it at night as her electricity is same price day and night.

Hankunamatata · 15/02/2021 17:21

Can you not just put a condenser driver in the downstairs toilet without ripping it out?

ShiteningMcQueen · 15/02/2021 17:22

Get a heated drying rack from Lakeland and you won't need a tumble dryer. Much better for environment too. Don't lose the downstairs loo.

littlegem84 · 15/02/2021 17:22

Can you wiggle things about a bit? I'm in the same position and am just about to switch the toilet under the slanted but under the stairs and stack the washing machine and tumble drier in the tallest bit under the stairs if that makes sense?

RoseMartha · 15/02/2021 17:22

I would keep the downstairs loo
