AIBU to argue a tumble dryer is more important than a downstairs toilet

I have a three bed townhouse. Top floor has en-suite,middle floor has a family bathroom and ground floor with a small toilet. I would like to rip this out and replace with a small laundry washing machine, tumble dryer and a pulley maid. My mum thinks I will devalue the house doing this and it will be inconvenient for the kids. I’m looking to move in the next five years but don’t want to be running to the laundrette to dry clothes till then. AIBU

I have a tumble drier in the bedroom, made to look like a dressing table with narrow shelving on either side. I'd love downstairs loo as I have key-in-the-door syndrome.

Replace your integrated washing machine with an integrated washer / dryer. I've just got a new Siemens one and it's great.
Keep your downstairs loo,
And win win.

I've never lived in a house with a downstairs toilet and I honestly don't understand the big appeal! ! Disability aside there's nothing wrong with a few upstairs trips. A laundry room is life changing, I wouldn't be without mine now! Seems crazy to think I used to do it in the kitchen.

We had a tumble drier put into our utility when it was fitted in 2014. I’ve never once used it.

The downstairs toilet on the other hand we couldn’t / wouldn’t be without.

Buy heated airer very cheap to run

LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/02/2021 08:36

I will start with the disclaimer that I don't own a tumble dryer and probably never will. We only bought our town house because it had a downstairs loo, we had a young baby at the time and I knew that having to rush upstairs when toilet training would be a pain.

If you get a condensing tumble dryer you can put it anywhere, even in a spare bedroom, or in your garage if you have one. I'd personally love an upstairs laundry so I didn't have to take clothes up and down the stairs when washing. Or get a washer/dryer and put it where you have your washing machine at the moment.

What else is in the ground floor? If a garage and no bedrooms I'd certainly consider it.

toodleloooo · 16/02/2021 08:46

Another vote for washer dryer! Worth doing your homework on how effective the dryer part is/its capacity, but works fine for us.

SarahLox77 · 16/02/2021 08:48

I have neither. No desire at all for a tumble drier - but I am considering spending £40k on an extension to accommodate a downstairs loo.

Stickytreacle · 16/02/2021 08:54

I'm with you op, we've never had a downstairs loo (the horror!) 😱 and we've managed fine, I couldn't cope without a tumble drier though!

It seems illogical to keep a downstairs loo for guests, it's you that lives there, and it just means an extra thing to clean. Plus running up and downstairs will keep you fitter!

CecilyP · 16/02/2021 08:59

I have neither but would prefer a downstairs loo every time. The only reason I would want a tumble dryer is if I had accommodation too small to dry clothes anywhere which would be unlikely in a 3 storey house with garden. While I am managing fine without a downstairs loo, not having one when I broke my ankle a few years ago was an absolute nightmare, so while I’m not planning one, I would definitely keep it if I had one.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/02/2021 09:23

A downstairs loo is a big plus in a family house. And lack of one often a big minus for buyers with families, esp. with small children. So if you’re planning to sell in the next few years.....
Ditto to what a pp said about a condenser dryer. A relative has one, they’re brilliant, you just tip the water out.

I have a similar type of house to you and we have our tumble dryer in the ensuite, which is ridiculously large so we can still use the ensuite. We also have 2 clothes horses in there too and the window open all the time. It also makes it easier to put the clothes away when you are near the bedrooms.
