to put my 18 month old to bed at 7pm?

I don’t think I’m BU, but friends and in laws all seem to think I’m putting my 18 month old to bed way too earlyHmm The constant little comments are just getting irritating now.

Is this too early for an 18 month old or just about right?

My 6 year old goes to bed between 6.30 and 7pm when she's not at school, she goes as early as 6pm when she's at school because we have to be up early.

oblada · 15/02/2021 17:01

All that matters is that it fits your schedule and your child gets enough rest.
My 4yrs old goes to bed at 7pm. Asleep by 8pm. Any later and he has night terrors. My 6 and 9yrs old go to bed at 8pm, asleep around 9pm - sometimes later for my 9yrs old. They both read in bed and sleep when they're had enough.

Volcanoexplorer · 15/02/2021 17:02

It’s totally fine. At that age mine sometimes went earlier if they were tired.

TheViewOutsideMyWindow · 15/02/2021 17:02

I'd say that's about right. At 18m my little one was napping once during the day at approx 12-2, then would be in bed by 6.30pm/7pm. Much later and it goes against their circadian rhythms; too late a bedtime can make it more difficult for them to get to sleep.

Freshprincess · 15/02/2021 17:05

Mine still had a 7pm bedtime in the first few years of school.

If he’s waking up at 4am you might need a rethink, but as he isn’t I wouldn’t change anything.

Make the most of your child free evenings .

4 yr old in bed by 6.30....

FrauleinF · 15/02/2021 17:08

18 month old and a 4 year old here. They always go up at 7pm, after the Night Garden and the Bedtime Story. They'll be asleep by 7.30 or 8pm, depending on whose turn it is to have a wash that night.

partyofsixteen · 15/02/2021 17:11

Absolutely not unreasonable.

greeneyedlulu · 15/02/2021 17:16

Tell them to mind their own business, as long as baby is happy, healthy and sleeping through the night then you're clearly doing things right, it's that simple. My little one goes to bed at 8 sometimes earlier on nursery days and sleeps through til 7.30am, it works for us and she's happy.

Reinventinganna · 15/02/2021 17:19

I hate when family/friends feel like they have a say in things like this!
Do what works for you!
If he’s sleeping well, he’s happy and healthy and it fits in your routine keep doing it!

110APiccadilly · 15/02/2021 17:19

CBeebies finishes at 7 for a reason. (I'm assuming it still does, that's what I remember from my babysitting days!)

FilthyforFirth · 15/02/2021 17:27

My 3 year old goes to bed at 630 and sleeps through until 7/730.

7pm is extremely standard. I know very few people who put their kids to bed later than that.

birdglasspen · 15/02/2021 17:28

It's perfect! My 4 year old still goes at 7pm, sometimes 7.30pm, I don't understand keeping kids up late, don't listen to them. (But I don't make comments to those that do!!)

Deelish75 · 15/02/2021 17:29

Both of mine went to bed at 7 when they were that age, dinner was at 5, bath at 6 and CBeebies bedtime stories whilst they had their bottle and then on to bed. The routine worked for all involved.
The only comments I ever had were from my mum - she has quite a controlling streak and I think as she had no control over this situation she had to make pushy undermining comments to me.

boomboom1234 · 15/02/2021 17:38

My 5 and 3 year old go to bed at 7. It's normal bedtime for children isn't it?!

boomboom1234 · 15/02/2021 17:40

Oh and I should also say they sleep till 8am so going to bed at 7 doesn't mean they will all wake early either!

shouldistop · 15/02/2021 17:44

Ds1 has had a 7pm bedtime since he was a baby, he's 4.5yo now and I've recently moved it to 7.30pm but we're upstairs reading books at 7pm.
Ds2 is 2mo and his bedtime feed is 7.30pm and asleep at 8pm.
The only reason ds2 is later is to allow me to read ds1 stories while dh baths baby then I do bedtime feed & settle.

Perfectly normal bedtimes IMO.

LucasLeesEyebrows · 15/02/2021 17:45

My 7 and 9 year old DDs go to bed at 7.30! The eldest does read for a few hours though.

Skigal86 · 15/02/2021 18:02

My almost 2 year old goes around 7, sometimes half 6 if she’s ratty, sometimes quarter past 7 if she’s having too much fun in the bath and usually goes straight off until half 6/7ish the next morning. Oh and she has a nap each day of anything between 40 and 90 mins.

SylviaPlath1984 · 15/02/2021 18:05

My 4 year old goes to bed at 7pm and is asleep by 7:30pm, it's been like this as long as I can remember! I don't think it's too early at all

Porcupineintherough · 15/02/2021 18:05

If you are in the UK that sounds right and proper. If you are in Spain or Italy they'll think you mad. Smile

DavidsSchitt · 15/02/2021 18:07

What? Mine went to bed at 6.15-6.30 at that age

By 7 and 9 years old they go up around 7pm and sleep by 7.30 usually

ThatsnotmyBorishishairistoneat · 15/02/2021 18:07

What? Of ourse not

AubergineDream · 15/02/2021 18:11

Yeah about 7pm with all mine at that age. Bit later on weekends or on holiday. A bit later once older, but I go to bed at about 9pm most nights. Not always to sleep, but to bed.

Distiller91 · 15/02/2021 18:12

My very active (feral) 3 year old is fast asleep by 7pm, sleeps til 6.30am. Works for me, works for him. Keep doing what works for you Grin
