To think 12 units in 3 hours hardly makes you feel tipsy, never mind drink.

With lockdown I’ve been drinking more on a weekend. Like many, I’m sure.

I only drink when DC are with their (with him 2/3 night a week. (totally understand that’s not possible for everyone - to drink when DC aren’t at home, obviously if they have NC with dad)

I never drink when I’m at work the next day either and it’s usually over 2 night a week only.

Since lockdown though, it feels like I drink more 😳 so to get tipsy, I’d now need about 10-12 units. I’m totally fine the next day, no hangover etc.... but what’s the norm to feel tipsy?

I feel like my threshold is higher basically. So I might drink a bottle of wine and a couple of vodkas one night (so 12 units) but then I’d have only a couple the day after. So no more than 20 units a week at the absolute maximum. Sometimes if I don’t fancy it, obviously I won’t drink at all.

I’ve got a friend who can drink a bottle of wine each night 😳😳 5/6 night a week, then go to work in a very responsible job the next day 😳😳 absolutely no way i could do that!

Again, I never drink when kids are home (at messy 4 night a week if not 5) and I absolutely don’t feel like I have a problem. Sometimes I just fancy a cup of tea!

But a recall at one point just needing a glass of wine to feel tipsy, not it’s nearly a bottle 🙈🙈🙈

What about you? Talking to my friends, theyr thresholds have increased too.

Completely normal. As a student I had to drink a vast amount to get even vaguely drunk. Now, drinking maybe a couple of single G&Ts a week and I’m sloshed after more than that. Getting older hasn’t helped.

Clicketyclick21 · 12/02/2021 23:11

What's your liver like? Any symptoms yet?

Justajot · 12/02/2021 23:12

I'm not sure about tipsy, but it doesn't seem to be doing much for your typing Grin.

I drink more now, so maybe 2 units 4 times a week. I used to only drink when I went out, so probably once every couple of weeks.

If you have to have over a bottle of wine to feel even tipsy I’d suspect you’re building up an alcohol tolerance.

Guess the more you drink the more you get used to it.

When I was at uni I could drink 8 pints on a night out no problem. Now I rarely drink and last time I tried I couldn’t finish a bottle of Becks as it went to my head so badly.

Chilver · 12/02/2021 23:14

One glass of wine here gets me tipsy or worse! But I haven't drunk a lot in years. Previously I'd have a few drinks when out and be only a little tipsy after 2-3 glasses of vodka and diet coke.

Comefromaway · 12/02/2021 23:14

I feel fuzzy after one glass of wine. Two sends me really tipsy.

Cabinfever10 · 12/02/2021 23:22

10-12 units and I'd be past out ☺
Drinking that much over 3 hours is really quite a lot tbh.
Do you drink alone often @TableFlowerss

This is no help to the OP but posts like this make me feel a lot better about my own drinking threshold. Sometimes I wonder if my tolerance is too high and then when I read this I think I'm not too bad after all.

TaraR2020 · 12/02/2021 23:26

Tolerance changes according to how much you drink regularly.

My tolerance is non existent atm bc I drink so little and so infrequently these days but im drinking socially on a regular basis it increases. Linked to what you're used to drinking too.

Exactly- I’m a bit worried now 🙈 I never used to drink- so only about the last year or so really, although I’d drink if I went out.

About 18 unites a week for the last year. Just turned 40 female

Well you drink over the recommended weekly limit....every week! 🤷‍♀️ Not sure what you want people to say. But yes, maybe try cutting down a bit.

MarthaWashingtonsFeralTomcat · 12/02/2021 23:30

I've heard a lot of people say their alcohol consumption has increased, yes. I wonder whether it's wanting to have somecsort of differentiation / "compartmentalising" of the weeks and weekends or the days and the evenings by doing something you can "only" do on a day off? Hmm

I don't think having a bottle of wine and a couple of vodkas at home (alone?) in the evening is normal or sensible really. Is that really only 12 units? A bottle of 12% wine is ten units and a unit of vodka is only 25ml. Measures are often more generous at home, 25ml is teeny.

Titsywoo · 12/02/2021 23:32

12 units sounds like a lot to me - I'd be wasted! I do drink more during lockdown but just 4 vodkas which is enough for me (I use a measure so I don't overdo it). Anything more than 6 and I'd feel pretty pissed I think.

CodenameVillanelle · 12/02/2021 23:32

10 units in 3 hours would make me pissed.

That’s very true. About 2 years ago we went out and I had 3 pints of cider with my friends. I had to go home 😳 was badly all the next day and feel better until about 5pm the following night.

That’s the difference, it wouldn’t touch the sides now

I assume Clickety means symptoms of liver disease caused by extensive alcohol intake. www.healthline.com/health/alcoholism/liver-disease

If you can drink a bottle of wine and a double shot of vodka and not even feel tipsy, you've built up quite a tolerance. How would you feel about not drinking for, say, 3 weeks. Does the idea make you uncomfortable? I'm not suggesting that you do itdepending on how your health is, it might even be dangerousbut I'm curious how the idea makes you feel.

(Fwiw, I'm not one of those MN people who cry shame at a drink. I've had a bottle to myself on a rare occasion, but it makes me really quite drunk.)

We don't drink much, a bottle of wine would last me and DH at least 2 days.

I feel like this when my friend tells me she drinks a bottle of wine most nights 😳 then goes to work the next feeling ok.....

I could drink a bottl of wine once a week and be ok if I was off the next day.
