Song for a Raggy Boy, based on the book by Patrick Galvin.

We watched it tonight and I feel like I've done ten rounds with Mike Tyson. It's beautifully made and an incredibly important story (about the industrial schools in Ireland, where the author grew up) but the violence against children, the unbearable sadness and fear...it was too much for me. Sad Worse than Scum, and that's saying something.

Is it on Netflix?

it’s confusing in that you’re warning people to not watch a film YOU didn’t like
GlitchStitch · 12/02/2021 23:36

I've seen it before. I'd stomach anything for Aidan Quinn.

Disagree, we need to know about this.

Ironytheoppositeofwrinkly · 12/02/2021 23:39

The only film I've ever seen that needs a PSA type warning is A Serbian Film. This is a bit OTT.

CauliflowerSneezed · 12/02/2021 23:41

If you want a hard hitting film watch Mysterious Skin. I was a wreck after watching that.

magicstar1 · 12/02/2021 23:50

You’re wrong OP. It needs to be seen. That type of thing was swept under the carpet for years and it did more harm.

Pluas · 12/02/2021 23:53

I knew Patrick slightly, and I’m delighted this film was eventually made, as he and Mary struggled financially at times, and the financing kept falling through.

His Raggy Boy trilogy is well worth reading, and his life as a whole was extraordinary rich and interesting.

Sittingonabench · 12/02/2021 23:55

While it may be an important issue and the film may raise awareness I think the OP is just trying to warn people that it is not an easy watch and may not be appropriate right now given people’s stressed mental state. Violence against children is a hard hitting topic at any time but people’s reserves are spent so I will probably wait to watch until a bit more resilient, thanks OP.

But the reviews make it quite clear

If people don't take any notice of those, why would they take notice of a random Mumsnetter?

itsureis · 13/02/2021 00:00

I agree with @Sittingonabench
Thank you OP for your review ... Ive watched a few hard hitting films in my time and they stay with you.

I'll avoid this 🌺

Are you trying to make more people watch it? Sounds interesting I love the film scum

Smallgoon · 13/02/2021 00:20

Martyrs (French) for me is the one film I watched that I wished I hadn't. Still disturbs me even to this day.

Picklypickles · 13/02/2021 00:30

Well it doesn't sound like my cup of tea to be honest, are there any wizards in it?

Whether that was the intention or not, I'm sure it'll be the outcome! The film came out in 2003 and I've never heard of it until now. Probably the case for many others who are gonna read this thread and then go look it up!
rawalpindithelabrador · 13/02/2021 00:52

I'll avoid.

namechangetheworld · 13/02/2021 01:27

I thought this was going to be about A Serbian Film too.

You're being absurd. This (brilliant) film doesn't glorify violence against children in any way, and depicts something very real that happened throughout history and is still happening today. It should be brought to people's attention, through any means necessary.

lighteincastlewindow · 13/02/2021 01:57

@namechangetheworld You're being absurd.

She is not being absurd. She just had an emotional reaction to a film and wanted to express it. Any ass on here can see that.

bingowingsmcgee · 13/02/2021 11:27

Thanks OP I'll probably read the book instead.
