To wonder what to do with this dog?

This morning I went for an early morning walk and saw my neighbours door wide open and their puppy was running around the block. I thought nothing of it and thought maybe they just let it run about. At around 9 a workman came and mentioned the dog was running around still. I went out to the shop and the door was still open. The puppy ran out to me, sweet little thing. , I knocked the door and shouted hello in the flat. No answer. I knocked harder and stepped in the flat, I looked around to see if anyone was in and had hurt themselves but no one was in. The whole house was im complete squalor, it had poo and wee everywhere, there was no electric, the dog had no water or food. This puppy was a bit thin, I looked around and there was nothing for the dog to eat. I got some food from another neighbour and have put the dog shut away in living room. I went to the shops and I’m wondering what to do next. I obviously don’t want to leave the dog, I could take the dog in until she comes back but then what? Maybe she just left her door open by accident? We’re not even allowed animals really. Do I just call an animal rescue? I would hate to get her dog taken off her, but at the same time she’s been gone with nothing left for the dog.

OP I'm so glad you've got the puppy at your house Flowers

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 12/02/2021 19:01

Oh I see you've given the dog back to the owner...the drunk owner...

This will all end very badly for the little puppy Sad

nimbuscloud · 12/02/2021 19:05

Poor pup

FossilisedFanny · 12/02/2021 19:06

Isn’t anyone else worried about the daughter Confused

TheSparkleJar · 12/02/2021 19:20

If it happens again, call a local dog charity, not the RSPCA. In my experience their main interest is in harassing the families of people who left them money in their wills. Animal welfare has long ceased to be of interest unless there's some press coverage and publicity to be gained from it.

caringcarer · 12/02/2021 19:22

You have done all you can. Not much else you could do but hand her puppy back. Keep an eye on the puppy if you can op. Blue Cross dog rescue never put a healthy dog down and are far better than RSPCA.

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 19:29

I have contacted our local dog rescue so fingers crossed SOMETHING is done. Not that I wasn’t worried about the daughter but you never know how comfortable people are living. If it wasn’t a flat covered in dog poo and we eit would just be a smelly, messy, house with no curtains or flooring. Not nice but not really anything to write home about, the lack of food electric and filth everywhere is what made me concerned

Who owns the flat?

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 12/02/2021 19:31

@Overrona21- can we see a pic of the puppy please? 🥰

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/02/2021 19:32

I’d call 101 and ask them to do a welfare check. I’m worried about her daughter.

Sadsiblingatsea · 12/02/2021 19:43

I think I would have taken the dog and rehomed him from that hell hole.
I was in a similar position once and you do what you have to do.

FossilisedFanny · 12/02/2021 19:49

If you think this is unfit for an animal then it’s unfit for a human , I would certainly be chasing up a welfare check.

TheChip · 12/02/2021 19:52

I'm just so confused as to why the police were not the first thing OP thought of. Instead it was the state of the house and to call the rspca. I just cant get my head around that

Kpo58 · 12/02/2021 19:55

Next time the puppy escapes, do not put a not through their door and take it to the vet or an animal charity. If they really cared for the dog, they should work to get it back. It's far better that it gets rehomed as a puppy than a young untrained dog where the damage has already been dealt.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/02/2021 19:56

How did you check for food? Open all the cupboards? Wouldn’t be my first thought.

FossilisedFanny · 12/02/2021 19:58

@TheChip me neither, especially as the Op has seen the teenage girl drunk and falling over in a onsie/ thong.

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 19:58

Because I didn’t know where the people were. I initially thought they had just left the house unlocked and maybe the dog hit the door. It’s a really flimsy door. I didn’t really know what to think, I did check the house to see if anyone was there hurt. Then I couldn’t help but notice the house. The dog was the first thing I could take control of. It’s not that I don’t care about the people. I didn’t want to over react. As time went on obviously I called the police, the rspca and a local dog charity. So yeah that’s the update for the 100th time

But how do you know there was no electric or food?
None of it makes sense to me.

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 20:03

Well the dog looked thin, it’s obviously been alone for hours by then with no water in its food bowl. So yep first thought was giving him some water, then I tried to look for some food. After I checked the house to see if anyone was in the house or injured

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 20:04

Their electricity box was open and you could see they were in debt, so it had cut out a while ago. I wasn’t even looking to be nosey I just wanted to feed the dog. I was so worried that they would come back and I would be standing in their house.

Quite.
DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/02/2021 20:06

With all these newer details, I think you need to call 101 now and ask again for a welfare check for the sake of the minor in that house. No electricity or food. It’s so cold here today, it’s set to be a cold night.

Unsure33 · 12/02/2021 20:09

The law is dog warden not rspca

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 20:09

I told them everything already. I asked for a welfare check the first time I called. It’s not hard to notice a house has no electric and then I checked the cupboards to feed the hungry dog.

You can't just rehome someone else's dog!
