To wonder what to do with this dog?

This morning I went for an early morning walk and saw my neighbours door wide open and their puppy was running around the block. I thought nothing of it and thought maybe they just let it run about. At around 9 a workman came and mentioned the dog was running around still. I went out to the shop and the door was still open. The puppy ran out to me, sweet little thing. , I knocked the door and shouted hello in the flat. No answer. I knocked harder and stepped in the flat, I looked around to see if anyone was in and had hurt themselves but no one was in. The whole house was im complete squalor, it had poo and wee everywhere, there was no electric, the dog had no water or food. This puppy was a bit thin, I looked around and there was nothing for the dog to eat. I got some food from another neighbour and have put the dog shut away in living room. I went to the shops and I’m wondering what to do next. I obviously don’t want to leave the dog, I could take the dog in until she comes back but then what? Maybe she just left her door open by accident? We’re not even allowed animals really. Do I just call an animal rescue? I would hate to get her dog taken off her, but at the same time she’s been gone with nothing left for the dog.

Any vet will scan the chip and check the owner

I have found 2 recently- 1 reunited with local owner-they gave me the address and I took him back but 1 was a stolen dog , the vet called the police and the owner and the vet was going to look after him until his owner could come- lived a couple of hours away and I was also not near my home.

What did 101 say Op ?

Bumblebee1980a · 12/02/2021 16:57

She obviously isn't looking after it properly is she. So the most obvious and sensible thing to do would be to call RSPCA.

Who have already said they won't do anything?
pilates · 12/02/2021 16:58

This is really upsetting 😢

I cannot believe RSPCA’s response, how awful.

Pretty typical RSPCA All fur coat and no knickers. Over inflated salaries and massive bureaucracy and not enough staff out on the front line.
TheChip · 12/02/2021 17:00

The RSPCA are absolutely useless. You're best off finding your local dog charity that is ran by volunteers. They usually have scanners as well so can check the chip.

JackieweaverhasALLtheauthority · 12/02/2021 17:01

Why would theybleave the door wide open if the house is full of expensive things? Very strange.

Wineinthegarden · 12/02/2021 17:02

I had a similar response from the rspca. Found a dog running loose near a main road, but they refused to come out and suggested that I just let the dog back out and that it would find its own way home. I pointed out that it could be killed on the road or cause a major traffic accident and they could not have cared less..

FossilisedFanny · 12/02/2021 17:03

@JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority exactly, this is why the Op needs to call 101 , it’s not just about the puppy’s welfare.

hardyloveit · 12/02/2021 17:06

@fossilised fanny if you read the ops up dates she's on hold to 101

MyLittleOrangutan · 12/02/2021 17:08

The RSPCA have really low standards for animal welfare.

Honestly I'd rehome it. German shepherds are not suitable dogs for owners who don't work hard with their dog. They're a difficult dog to raise. The poor thing deserves better. Definitely see if it has a microchip, could be stolen, they're expensive but could also just be from a shitty backyard breeder she knows.

harriethoyle · 12/02/2021 17:10

Contact your local rescue - they might be able to help? or send me the puppy

snowblower · 12/02/2021 17:11

Good idea to call non emergency. Hopefully they will come to do a welfare check. I'd be more concerned about the woman and teen daughter than the dog.

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 17:12

So my neighbour knocked my door. She said her daughter left the door open. Sad it still doesn’t explain the complete lack of care but what could I do? She’s taken the dog. I am concerned so much about that poor baby. 101 are still going to check, I’ve contacted the council about the dog and I’m also holding out some hope that RSPCA will check the dog. I may also contact a local charity because I am worried about the dog. She seemed fine, didn’t offer any explanations just said thank you slightly slurring her words. Like I said if you saw her you wouldn’t think she lived how she was living

And another vote for the RSPCA being USELESS. I found a stray unmicrochipped cat who was really poorly. They couldn't care less! So the vet and I split the costs of her treatment and the local cat rescue rehomed her to a lovely family ❤

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 12/02/2021 17:13

Poor puppy - glad that you have him safe & have fed him.
Big hugs & cuddles to puppy Flowers
if RSPCA no help, have you tried Dogs Trust or any other local rescue centres?

Hope that you are able to keep him safe until someone responds.

Happylittlethoughts · 12/02/2021 17:15

That's disgraceful that RSPCA won't come out. Hope he gets a new home.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 12/02/2021 17:15

cross posted - sort of glad that the woman has turned up, but she really doesn't sound fit to take care of a dog.
Poor thing.

FossilisedFanny · 12/02/2021 17:16

I’d still be worried about the teen and her mother , especially as you say the mother was slurring.

vintageyoda · 12/02/2021 17:17

The word slurring and the state of the place sound like she's alcoholic. The daughter may feel utterly powerless to help her mum. It's no environment for a puppy, especially a breed like that, but there's so little you can do except what you've already done.
The RSPCA front line staff are too stretched to attend situations like this. As someone said, the top brass need their salaries cut so they can employ more of the people that actually do the work.

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 17:20

So hopefully the police will still come out check on everyone and I’m hoping they will see the state of the house and take it from there. They’re definitely not okay to look after a dog like that especially his size. We live in flats for gods sake. I feel sad, I hate animals suffering I really do

OP posts:
giletrouge · 12/02/2021 17:22

Not ok for young teen daughter to be living like that either. Poor kid.

HaveringWavering · 12/02/2021 17:24

Is this worth calling social services re the daughter?

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 17:24

Of course not okay for the daughter to live like that. She’s been drunk and in her thongs outside before. She had a party in the middle of lockdown 2.0 it was a nightmare.
